Two weekends to choose from:
March 16 or 17

Or

March 29 or 30

Let us play with your bikes! (or not, if there's nothing to change!) Potluck at Knot's "Chez de Squalor" in north Seattle. Plenty of parking in the apartment complex lot, fairly easy to find from I-5, and a school nearby with a track to test ride on.

Put in your votes, majority (probably) rules!

March 30 would be the best day for me (no races that day :) ). My main bikes have been fit, so I don't think I'd want any tinkering, but I'd be happy to offer myself up as a study object. I have 3 that have been professionally fit by the same person, my race bike - 700c wheels, my rain bike- 650c wheels, and my TT bike. It might be interesting to take a look at the similarities and the differences. I do have my cross bike, and I'm not serious enough about cross to bother having that one professionally fit that could be tinkered with if there is any interest.

yum, food. I will bring food too.
And I probably don't need much fitting either. But want to learn the right POSITION on the bike.

I'm pretty much assuming that most folks won't need any adjustments, but it will be nice to have some bikes-n-bods to hone our skills on. I'm also thinking it'd be fun to do some of the yoga I got to do at the class in SF. Or at least hand out copies of the poses.

There is a bike route from my apt compex to the beach with some great views (approx 4 miles). If anyone wants to lead that ride (TrickyTiger?) it could be a nice addition to the day.

We're available on the 29th. The 30th we're doing the "we're almost respectable but not quite yet" thing by going to a play then immediately to an old-school punk type show after.

Mmmm, spam. You know I almost made a poached egg with spam dish today :D I do have Spam Surplus at home.

Our bikes were fit by Erik the Great but it would be interesting to see the rationale behind it and what we could be doing differently.

On the other weekend the St. Paddy's Day Dash is on that sunday but it should be over early. Other than that, not so much going on :)

I will be on a plane on March 29th heading east towards Pittsburgh to visit my parents. I will be gone all week long, my school's spring break and my annual trek home. Once again my schedule has not been the best lately! And before that trip Joe and I are going to eastern Washington for a visit to see our son. Either the weekend of 15th - 16th or 22nd - 23rd. Depending on Joe's volunteer work with his club and the pass weather. Always something going on it seems!

Have fun and take pictures. I think this should be my mantra . . . . ummmmmmmmmmm "Have fun and take pictures." ummmmmmmmmmm

Ah, awesome! In that case, I think either of those weekends ought to work for me. Incidentally, I am going in for a bike fitting today. Will be interested to see what they come up with. My bike seems to work fine, but I know it is not perfect just now. I am mostly going to get some more info for when I shop for a new bike.

Sounds like fun! Talk to my sister and she wants to come along too! She just got a new bike and is primed for a fitting. Is there going to be a ride? If so, Salsa, remind Chris he said he would take me out on the tandem. :D The 29-30 weekend would work best for us. bikerHen

Hey, BH, I am hoping that sometime this summer I will make it over that way...kinda been thinking of camping at Wawai (or however you spell it) down on the Snake, and doing the bike loop to Lewiston, up the grade and back around to the campground. If I get over that direction, I will let you know!

Ever done that loop, or feel like doing it? (oops a little hijack...feel free to PM)

Either of the Saturdays (3/15 or 3/29) work for me. Linda says it works for her calendar too and yes, we're up for a ride.
Also, I fear that this might sound VERY differently than I intend it via email, but suffice to say that I am very happy with the fit on each of my bikes and don't want to change anything. My Rodriguez is a custom steel Stellar, which was designed by the former co-owner of R&E, Estelle. Estelle and my PT, Julie Johnson cooperated on my fit and I've been very happy all along. My Seven was custom fit and custom made to perfection also...and no offense, Knot, but I'd rather ride it than sit and model and be self conscious and all :o Linda, being the PTA type too, said that she doesn't want/need anything changed on her fit either, but would be glad to bring her Cannondale along and reinforce your fit training concepts. We'd both like to learn more about the yoga, stretches too...can never be good enough in that area, eh?!

If your fit is good, it's good. No need to worry about feeling being hurt if you don't want anyone to mess with the bike. We'll talk about other stuff too. And a ride would be fun.

I'm thinking that we leave this thread open for input until Friday evening then officially decide on a day and commit.

I'm leaning toward the weekend of March 29-30.

It sounds like it will work for a majority of folks, and I think it will work better for me, too.

Wahine
02-26-2008, 07:19 PM
I'm good for that weekend. I imagine that we're not likely to hear from many other people, so maybe we should call it? Then the question becomes Sat or Sun? I would do better with Sat but I can still certainly make Sunday happen.

KnottedYet
02-26-2008, 08:30 PM
Sat or Sun would be fine for me, Sat might be better because my church doesn't get out until about 1:00 pm on Sunday. A little more wiggle room on Saturday.

And that way I can spend Sat morning frantically cleaning my Den of Squalor.

Eden

It's possible, but not assured, that I will be racing on the 29th, but I'm definitely free on the 30th. If I race on the 29th, I likely wouldn't be back in Seattle until pretty late in the evening.

Oooo!ooooo! Ooooo! I THINK I CAN MAKE IT! Either weekend!

And, I really actually do need some help with fitting some aspects of my bike. Given that I live less a kilometer from Knotted, I'll just sail on down the hill.

what time? sooner I know the sooner I can talk work into shifting my schedule if need be!

Erm, yessss..... I think so! Assuming I don't kill anyone on 205th or Edmonds Way- would the best route be to go through Woodway? That's how I go, at least. Would be pleased to lead something. I'll try to get the 29th off ASAP.

Knot, I was thinking of making caraway seed scones for this. Is there a good gluten-free flour that works well as a sub for regular old flour, that you know of? If not, I will bring something else.

Don't worry too much about cleaning! None of us will be worried--we're just looking forward to being in good company.

By the way, and this is partly fyi, BikerHen--Chris will not be coming to this one, since he is starting the RAMROD training rides next Saturday.

This is such a cool idea. I wished I lived out closer to you guys - I'd love to join this. You guys have a nice camaraderie going out there, and you seem like you're alotta fun.

I have been following and really interested in Knott's excursions into bike fitting and saddle studies. Thanks for posting those Knott.

I'm wondering. Although this would really seem like an extra amount of work for you all - so it's a rather selfish request I guess, but - it'd be great if you guys could do some sort of quick photo documentation of what you're doing. Or quick notes like "here's so and so's problem" or "this isn't right based on this posture and your ailment" and then explain how you addressed it and then post it so we could all see how it went. The way you PT gals couple this info with the whole body physiology is great. It's so interesting.

I think I need to find a good fitter. I've been to 2 already for the same bike and each approach and remedy has been quite different from each other.

Hey, if I can get organized enough to put batteries in my camera, I'd be happy to take some pics!

Salsa - make regular wheat scones! (but if you want to experiment, try Pamela's Pancake and Baking Mix.) I will have plenty of gluten-free stuff for the potluck, too.

Wahine - what's the status with you and wheat?

Wahine
03-16-2008, 05:53 PM
I can have some, I just can't over do it. So beer's OK, pizza once in a while oK, a sandwich once a week but not 2 in one day:eek::eek: So It's all about moderation for me, not complete abstinence.

Now I'm curious. Why?

KnottedYet
03-16-2008, 06:09 PM
Cuz Salsa was asking about making wheat-free scones for the potluck. (I don't want her to go to the trouble if I'm the only non-wheat person there!:o)

salsabike
03-16-2008, 06:13 PM
Honey, I just CANNOT bring myself to make something to bring to a potluck that you can't eat. It's just not right. So I will try the pancake flour. Why not? It's good to learn something new. Can I get it at Whole Foods?

KnottedYet
03-16-2008, 06:24 PM
Oh, it's everywhere, especially the small bags! The cheapest I've found is at Fred Meyer. Next cheapest is PCC. Haven't priced it at Whole Foods, but I'm sure it's there, too.

I buy the giant bags at PCC. It has baking soda and baking powder and salt in it all ready, so be careful it doesn't throw off your recipe.

Here's the Scone recipe on the back of the bag, to give you an idea of how they handle the additional baking powder:
2 1/4 cups Pamela's Mix
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup currants
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp baking powder
4 tblspn butter
2/3 cup milk

do the usual thing, bake 375 for 15 minutes, etc etc

I've never tried baking anything else with Pamela's mix, just pancakes. Though I have added it to a really bad pizza crust mix, and the Pamela's improved the pizza crust a gazillion-fold.

Not crazy! I go to Portland for day trips here and there.

Portland to Seattle, about 3 hours, depending on traffic, driving style, etc.

Add maybe another 1/2 hour since Knot is a bit north, and maybe another 1/2 hour for being new to the route?

It would be a fun way to meet you!

It's definitely not crazy. In fact I will be driving through PDX to go up and we could carpool up and back from PDX. It would actually simplify things for me because I wouldn't bother staying overnight on Saturday if someone was riding with me on I5. If I don't have company, I'll likely try to stay overnight in Seattle and drive back on Sunday.

How about 11:00-2:00 ish?

Anybody have a problem with those times? How 'bout you folks coming up from PDX area?

TrickyTiger is up for leading a sweet little ride from my place to the beach for anyone who would rather do that than go to the alleycat.

Isn't it really neat how a few adjustments make a world of difference?! I was professionally fitted on my bike 5 years ago and I have everything marked. I've been watching this thread off and on hoping that I don't have to work so we can come up for the day. At this point, I'm off during the day but I'm oncall that night starting at 11pm so no overnight stays this time. Knot, I'll be pm'ing you for directions and will let you know (probably last minute) if we are coming. I have a trainer too if we need another one. Let me know what else we can bring to help out. :)

Welcome to Portland GLC!! Sorry we haven't gotten to meet you yet even though we aren't that far away in Beaverton. Work and college schedules have been out of control lately. Hope to see you there.

It'll be cool with the trainers already coming, but if you love and trust your trainer bring it. (or at least bring your trainer skewer if your bike has a funky one)

We'll probably play fitting games one bike at a time so everyone can see what we're looking at. With another stand we can have folks warm up in peace before we walk over and start eyeballing 'em.

TrickyTiger will lead the ride to the beach.

My schedule just got kind of up-ended. Looks like Chris will be working in Florida for most of the next 4-6 weeks (bad). He got home late Friday and has to turn right back around and go back tomorrow. I am going to join him there on Saturday and will be there from Saturday the 29th through Sunday April 6. That means I will miss BOTH the bike fit party AND the Seattle tri meeting. Agghh. And I have so many tri questions...clothes, shoes. I have some cool tri books too.

I am really, really sorry I will miss this. Please note---someone should try to bring Gorgonzola-stuffed olives for Knot and X....

Wahine, I'm voting--in ink--for the tri Gorge weekend to be July 19-ish. That doesn't rule out other weekend possibilities--I just mean I can commit to that.

Long ago on OTA we had a food discussion and I could swear, X, that you wanted olives stuffed with gorgonzola. So, got that one wrong...

Going to West Palm Beach. I've been there once before when he was working down there, and it's pretty nice. I could never manage this if it wasn't falling right on my spring break week, and I probably would not be doing it if he wasn't going to be gone for so LONG. Better than his old tugboating trips, I s'pose--six months in Alaska, those.

At the next party, we'll have a "bendy kids" session.

I think the root of its issue is that I'm asking it to support more weight than it wants...I'd probably be pretty unhappy if someone made me carry me around on my back all day, too. Heh.

There's at least one loose spoke, and it's way out of true.

My bike, on the whole, seems unhappy. I noticed on the trainer a little while back that the shifting is all out of whack as well. (I should really find a bike shop that doesn't include carrying my bike up three flights of stairs, which is something my knee just doesn't seem to be down with. Or, um, maybe I should learn how to do some of these things for myself.)

At one point last night I was looking out at Lake Union (from the relative warmth of my living room) and was wondering why it looked like it was snowing. so this bike ride. ... how are we dressing, because (at least here in the willamette valley) it's been sunny and warm for 15 minutes, then hailing and blowing rain for half an hour, then just cold and gloom, wipe, rinse, and repeat.:( how does one *prepare* for that?! I'm determined not to freeze like I did on the last Seattle ride...:p

TrickyTiger is leading the bike ride, but she's not sure if/when she'll be there. Bring full rain gear and warm gloves and helmet liner. It's just plain cold. And wet. With frozen bits.

(oh, my poor daffodils and primroses!)

Those of you driving up here, be careful! I've heard the snow south of Seattle was worse.

(we might just end up with food, fitting, mechanics, and TE'ers run amuck!)

OK - a change of plans (due to weather and allergies and sick teammates) means I'm racing on Sunday, rather than Saturday - so it's last minute, but I can make it. I'll bring all 3 of my bikes in the interest of comparing what differing geometries do to bike fit. (race, rain and TT). PM'ing now!

btw - I can bring 2 trainers and 2 yoga mats (though one has been used a bit as a kitty scratcher....)

It's, um, late. 3:something in the morning. I've just gotten home from a brutally long day--I left my apartment at 7:00 this morning. Ugh.

Anyway, as of now, I'm still planning on being there. But, if I fail to show up, it's not because I didn't want to...it's because I wasn't able to peel myself out of bed.

Hey, Knot, what's it like out there?

No snow right now.

Clear skies and chirping happy birds, so I'm hoping it warms up in a hurry so we can use my patio.

No yoga mats needed as: 1. I forgot to bring home the poses info. 2. there just isn't room in my apartment for everything. 3. I don't remember the poses anyway.

(I was so panicked about the snow and SKnot out without his jacket and not answering his cell and going to the comic/card store on a different bus and not answering his cell phone and taking care of someone's cats while they're gone and not answering his cell phone.... that I completely forgot them at work.)

Does anyone know about the alleycat race at 3:27 pm? I think Mimi mentioned it, and we tried to schedule things so folks could go to it. But Mimi, if you stay home, can you send a link or something so we can find it?

mimitabby
03-29-2008, 06:45 AM

ah, i love the internet

Dashap, over at 327 Words, is putting together the Taco Truck Time Trial. On March 29 at 3:27, the "checkpoint-themed alleycat-style bike race" starts at 20/20 Cycle, 2020 Union St.

Riders will leave in staggered starts, and head to a taco truck on Rainier Avenue where they will have the option of downing a taco, for time bonus points. Then, it’s further south to another taco truck in Columbia City, and the opportunity for more bonus points. The event concludes with a full-bellied sprint along Lake Washington Boulevard for the after-party and prizes at the Madrona Alehouse.

It really is surprising how quickly the weather changed today. It was too cold this morning for Biak and me to take the kiddos on the bikes to the party. It also looked as though a storm was imminent. Thankfully after lunch most of the clouds dissipated and we had great weather for the ride.:) We came back just in time, because a storm front moved in after we arrived.[Thank-you weather and bike powers-that-be] The temps started dropping after that. Brrr! We encountered hail on our way back home.

Meanwhile Wahine and Knot made all that brought bikes to be fitted feel quite comfortable with their knowledge
and adjusted a few saddles using Wahine's fancy angle tool and Knot's makeup kit full of bike tools.

Thank you Knot for being a gracious hostess while we tramped mud into your carpet. Thank you Wahine for showing Kit how to unlock the knot in my shoulder using a pressure point. I still feel great on that side. Thank you BIAK for all of the hard work you did on so many bikes yesterday. It was nice talking to you after the ride and meeting your wonderful children. I hope your little girl is feeling better today.
It was wonderful seeing some familiar faces and just as nice meeting some new ones. I hope we all get to hang out again real soon.
A special thank you to Mary for her funny and caring encouragement as we almost dropped some lungs getting up those hills.

We got home at about 11:30 last night. We stopped by the Seattle Flagship REI on out way home to pick up the bike rack that they put aside for me. When I called them yesterday morning, the guy assured me he had it in hand and it was the correct one. (they're the only one who has it in stock anywhere near us and I wanted to see it in person before buying) It turned into one long 90 minute error. We didn't end up taking it home because as it turns out, they didn't actually have it afterall. They could only find the one with a 2" connector instead of a 1 1/4". I was rather perturbed for having waited that whole time with the anxiety of needing to get back here for my on call at the hospital. We barely made it back in time. Thankfully, I never got called in last night and slept very soundly until 9am this morning. :D

Okay, off to our favorite little diner to get b-fast and go look at some bikes from craigs list. (motorcycles this time.)

See y'all next time!

Hey again,
Great pics, all - thanks! I'll add a few here too, plus one of us at our 1/2point in our short, sunny ride yesterday. There was the cutest little toddler who touched each of our wheels while we were stopped, then squealed with delight. He stopped and stayed at sgtiger's beautiful green Rodriguez, as he was holding his own green cup...
The clouds were hiding the Olympic mountains, but we did enjoy the goings-on at the beach park, sea kayakers and ferry crossings, plus a makeshift teeter-totter with REALLY big driftwood; that sight prompted Wahine to share an anecdote about a teachable moment - ya know, muscles and joints and bones i.e. levers/fulcrums. We were a rapt audience for yoda!
Sorry that your stop at REI was more frustrating than productive, X and Kit; but, at least it sounds like you found it without a tour of the city!
Glad you are continuing to enjoy Linda's torte, Knot and sgtiger - you're too funny - thanks for posting the Pike Brewing's Kilt Lifter Ale info for Bruno et al...yummy stuff...ALL of the food was yummy and thanks too, to RaleighDon for his gorgeous creation...mmmm!

Hi all. Just wanted to say my thanks to Knot for being such a great hostess, to Wahine for travelling so far just to help us all "straighten up", and to everyone else who showed up with great food and fun. It was really great to meet you all. I'm sorry that I couldn't stick around for the ride -- bummed, actually. But I needed to get home and see my friend's mother get a tatoo as a memorial to her (she passed away in December from Breast Cancer). She got a beautiful flowing pink ribbon with two butterflies, right over her heart, and Kelli's name on it. So beautiful.

So next time you all get together, I hope to get to be part of it, and part of the ride.

PS.. between yesterday and dinner last night with friends, I gained 3 lb! I NEEDED to go for the ride with you all instead of dinner last night!

THANKS AGAIN... Really enjoyed it.
And WAHINE: I PROMISE to start doing core work -- I just saw my posture in these pictures, and it is obviously an issue! Any suggestions!?

First, it looks like a great party! Seattle would have been a great place to be this weekend!

Got a question about the first picture in this bunch of pictures, please?

That wheel, Boy in Apron. Truing it, yes? You have something in your hand --what is it, please? Is it something that would be helpful for DH? He gets to work on his wheel fairly frequently, since he breaks spokes every now and again. (one day, he annoyed himself greatly: kicked the wheel inadvertently unclipping, took out several!) He's getting pretty good at truing, but maybe there are some tools that he doesn't have yet that would make it easier?

Kano -- (always looking for gift ideas, since he's really hard to buy for!)

Jesvetmed, I'm looking forward to doing a TE ride with you. Maybe we can stop for coffee somewhere?

[Brainstorming]
Better yet, my fellow goddesses of the chaining - how about meeting up at a cafe and riding to one of the nearby brew pubs? I know I'm not ready for the multi-day tour version yet, but it might be ideal for a friendly half-day TE ride. Hmm... I hope the fates decide soon if I'll have a new addy or not. I wouldn't mind organizing it, but someone else will have to plan the route and lead. If I end up in PDX, I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to get BIAK to lead, since we won't be hurting for sitters if we move down there. Hey, each city can have their own and we can all report back here. Wouldn't that be cool?

I think you might be referring to a spoke wrench (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoke_wrench). They can be purchased individually or as a set. If all your bikes have the same size spokes, you'll only need just the one. Just make sure to get the right size though.

http://www.rei.com/search?vcat=REI_SEARCH&query=spoke+wrench&x=30&y=11
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000N27GFC

BIAK seems to prefer the ones shaped like this:

I've taken the 2 days off work, but we could aim for say 4:30 or something. Pika - could you work that in as a recovery ride in your training? :) CC - how tall are you?
