View Full Version : What does it MEAN??

Meg McKilty
02-22-2008, 05:48 AM
I was in the pool this morning doing my first pool workout in 4.5 years (yay me), and I was pondering very hard: what the crap does "kelownagirl" mean?!

Is it Kel-Own-A-Girl? Is it Kelowna-Girl?

More-so, what does everyone's name mean? Mine, Meg McKilty, is a name a friend made up to name his future bar. I will have a stained-glass portrait of me on the ceiling in a kilt and have happy hour drinks named after Scottish lore.
Btw, I am not Scottish; I just like kilts.

Kelowna is only a half hour drive away from where I live, so it never occurred to me that the name might have any other meaning. :p

btw, my nick is the acronym for the words on the top tube of my bike "the Little B!!ch That Could". :D

Of course, I had assumed you were Scottish because of your name and think it's fun that you're all about the kilt! ;)

Hugs and butterflies,

Melalvai
02-22-2008, 08:55 AM
Melalvai is from a elven language my husband invented when he was a teenager. It might sound weird but constructed languages, or "con-lang" are so common that their forums & lists make TE and even Bike Forums look tiny and mild mannered. The whole family has their own elven name. It's an easy way to come up with a name that has not been chosen by anyone else.

Melalvai means Peaceful Mischief. My daughter, Nelalvai, means Little Mischief.

Kelowna.
When I first started coming here I dyslexified that into "clown".
No offense intended, you can see how that can happen :p

My name is Annette, so No No Nanette. That and one day in HS Chem, my friend spun around in his seat and said "I'm going to start calling you 'NoNo'. You just look like one." I don't know what that means:rolleyes:

Yes, but you get bonus creativity points for putting an underscore between your first name & last initial. ;)

Mine is a nickname my husband has gave me and is commonly used amongst my buddies. I love to windsurf, surf and snowboard - all baord sports.... hawaiian origins... thus Wahine. And no, I'm not Hawaiian and my real name could have easily been Meg McKilty based on my ancestry. My real name is a very old Celtic name.

Mine's my initals plus anniversary month/day. Not very original, but I got tired of trying to remember "who I was" at different places, and this is easy for family and close friends to recognize as me:o. I really admire the quirky, descriptive names some of you have come up with!

Mine is from that story about the person walking down the beach, throwing stranded starfish back into the ocean. Someone asks them why they are bothering...how could it matter, when there are so many starfish stretching down the beach to the horizon. The person replies...it matters to this one.

PS: Mimi, I LOVE your new avatar! :)

Mine is from my favorite city in the world (so far) - Florence. I like to pretend I'm Italian. In reality I'm a blonde, very very pale Heinz 57, not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. And 11 for my lucky number. Born on the 11th day of the 11th month in '83 and 8+3=11.

It is nice to learn what they mean from you all.

re my screenname...

I've been using the same name since 1994 or 1995? My first AOL address--back in those days, you could only have 10 characters, thus, no E. Tuckervill is my little fiefdom, here, wherever I hang my hat. I can't imagine ever changing it, really.

I was Tuckervill before Tanya Tucker, I can tell ya that!

Mine is simple:

Aggie= I am a Texas A&M Aggie.
Ama= a family nickname from my brother when we used to bowl. He pronounces it Ah-m-a. Many of those close to me don't even use my full name.

I wrote an "Excursion" column for my newspaper (regular columnist flaked on me) about commuting to work 10 miles with studded tires at 10 below zero. I said something to the effect of how frigid it was when in the shade of the hill, and when the sun came over the butte "it felt like a climax."

A smarta$$ acquaintance wrote a letter to the editor saying he had bicycled for fitness, transportation and enjoyment for 30 years but never had a climax, maybe he should "ask the CyclaSutra" how.

My editor banned the word "climax" from an excursions after that. But I thought it was hilarious.

Popoki_Nui
02-22-2008, 08:39 PM
Popoki = cat in Hawai'ian. Nui means 'big', 'many', 'great' throughout Polynesia. I'm big and adore cats (I also have, and have had many cats), hence....Popoki Nui. Elsewhere in the Pacific, cat is "Pusi". Pusi Nui just sounded.....wrong somehow.

edit; not Polynesian myself, but i've travelled some out there and love to study the culture and languages.

Raindrop
02-22-2008, 08:42 PM

trinena - tri because i fell for triathlon tho' i've only done one but definitely plan for more. and ya that whole play on tri and try. nena because it's a term of an endearment/affection in spanish derived from girl/daughter (niņa) used in families and with significant others. i like the blending of the two qualities.

Aint Doody
02-24-2008, 06:16 AM
I'm orginally from the South, and most Southerners say "aunt" as aint--at least in my part of the South. I had a great, great aunt who was called Aint Doody. I can't even remember her real name now. There was a story about a cousin saying, "Oh, Aint Doody, I luv you!" So when I got my Pilot in 2005, all I could think of was, "Oh, Aint Doody, I luv you!" The bike became Aint Doody, but I shortened it to Doody, and I became Aint Doody.

Later when I looked at it, I thought--Hmmmm, this could be translated into meaning "not sh.."

I figured the aint was aunt, but thought doody was some form of her name.
I had an aunt, Josephine, who's name my eldest cousin could not say when he was a child. He tried to say "Jo Jo", but it came out "Dodo". So she was always Aunt Dodo to all of us. She wasn't a flightless bird, certainly not an idiot. So...Dodo...Doody. Whatever! :D;)

I have an aint Noller. She is really Aunt Ann, but this always drove her nuts, so of course, what do all the kids do?

DH and I would tell all of our friends how far I would ride at a time while I was training for a century. They would all look at us and ask me, "are you crazy?"

I do have an instructor in school that originally thought it was crazy bikini chic. I laughed when she said that. I told her absolutely no way this body would get in a bikini.

Mine's my old radio call sign, from my years in the navy. Some imaginative ops officer thought it was a clever modification of my actual name, Judy. I hated it at first, but it kind of grew on me. You know, like fungus.

Back when I had to choose a user name I was new to biking and having to walk my bike up the harder hills. I saw the TE Hill Slug jersey here and thought that was me. Since then I think I've graduated from hill slug to at least a hill lizard. I've thought about changing names but I've kinda grown attached to it.
