View Full Version : Prayers for my Dad

I received word Thursday evening that my dad (79 years young) was in the hospital. He underwent some primary tests yesterday and they have discovered a "large mass" at the junction of the small and large intestines. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is not cancer. Please keep my parents in your prayers - my mom is really scared and worried (as is everyone in the family).

Thanks

My prayers are going out to your family. Just keep thinking posative. And I will do the same for you as well. It is hard to deal with a sick family memeber when they leave far away. I have been my sister's crutch since my niece got sick. It helps to call a lot and just be there for your mom to vent and talk about her fears. Poor thing I totally know what you are going through. Don't give into to fear it doesn't help.

Ok, adding the makbike family to the prayer list. Please keep us posted, because you really ARE in our thoughts, and we really DO care.
Please take good care of mom. She's probably terrified of losing him. :(

Thanks to all for their prayers and positives thoughts. My dad had a rough night last night so the doctors have decided to keep him in the hospital (he is in the tiny hospital their tiny town has) until they scope him on Tuesday. Today's x-ray showed that the blockage seems to be moving/breaking up so that is a great sign. My dad is complaining about the clear, liquid diet they have him on - yet another good sign. My older brother drove down to be with our parents and will return tomorrow. Looks like it is time to coordinate with my other siblings so that someone is with them until the results come back from his scope on Tuesday. Please continue to keep my parents in your thoughts and prayers. I appreciate all the good vibes.

Okay, my mom passed along false information when she told me the other day the blockage was moving. The sad news is that the barium is not moving so the scope has been canceled. The surgeon is scheduled to see my dad tomorrow and hopefully put him on his surgery docket ASAP. My dad will have to be moved to the hospital in Livingston or one in Cookeville for their tiny hospital is not equiped for major surgeries.

My dad has stopped eating for it simply makes him vomit and creates a lot of abdomenial discomfort. He did sound better today, yesterday it was very evident he was quite uncomfortable.

I'm planning on heading to Tennessee as soon as I know when the surgery is for my mom can't drive when it is dark so she will need someone to drive her to the hospital and back home each day.

Thanks again for all the prayers and positive thoughts.

Marcie, be strong. We'll be thinking of you.

I do not want to second guess the abilities of the medical professionals, but my only concern is whether the hospitals in Livingston & Cookeville have a lot of experience with this type of surgery. I know that the number of each type of surgery performed by a hospital has a direct correlation to successful outcomes. Vanderbilt's only an hour from Cookeville...

Mr. Silver, I would like nothing more then to have my dad transfered to Vandy or even to a hospital in Louisville. Both my parents are quite stubborn and convincing them to move outside their comfort zone is nearly if not impossible. All my brothers and sisters can do is support them and privately hope and pray they have made a wise decision. Truth be told I've not been impressed with the doctors my dad has been seen by in the past. All I can do now is hope this new surgeon is knowledgeable and capable of the task at hand. Dealing with elderly parents is, as you know, quite challenging. We are walking a fine line between respecting their wishes and doing what we (my brothers, sisters and myself) feel needs to be done. Where is that "parent manual" when you need it?

They come from a generation that accepts everything the doctor says as infallible.

Frankly, their comfort zone is probably more important to their well being than good medical care.

Thanks again to one and all. I'm leaving this evening for Tenn. My dad is scheduled for surgery tomorrow and I hope and pray this new doctor knows what he is doing. I'll try to update when I have access to a computer.

Thanks to all for the prayers and words of support.
