okay ladies - I need ideas. Last year my goal was to complete my first olympic distance triathlon, however life got in the way. I was aiming for Chattanooga (sp?) TN tri in July - couldn't do it because I ended up in Oklahoma for a month on roation. Then I was going to do the Music City tri in Nashville - a rotation in Birmingham that required 100 hour weeks ruined my training leading up to that one. So I was looking at doing Memphis in May this year - now I have realized that is my graduation date - May 18th. AHHH !!! I am getting a little fed up.

I will be moving from Alabama sometime after May 18th to where ever I am going to complete my medical residency. Won't know where for another month. However, it will most likely be in the OK, TX, KS area if everything goes smoothly (cross fingers). I would either like to do a May or June Olympic distance tri, but can't travel long distances because of money. So, does anybody have any ideas on races around Alabama in May (besides May 18th) or the OK, TX, KS area after May 18th? I am kinda looking at the Route 66 tri on June 1st - but a friend is getting married the day before in Alabama and I will be in the process of moving (but I still may do it, especially if I am moving to Oklahoma). Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!!

I have no ideas on those east coast tris, but I did want to wish you good luck on Match Day!

If you can do ANY training, much less tri training during your 4th year of medical school you're a much better woman than I.

Thanks!! I am counting down the days (34  ). My schedule worked out where all of my hard rotations were before interviews and I did not get much in during that time at all, and little during interviews. After New Years, though, everything has calmed down and I'm getting the time in, and since the preceptor for my next rotation is also a triathlete who likes to compare training methods, I won't have to worry about a few goggle lines on my face in the morning! (plus he never starts before 7am and is usually done by 5:30).

Oh, and I've looked around and there is a possible one in Georgia on May 25th and then one in Austin in June, but I'm still open for more ideas (the Austin one looks huge )

Well, I know of this one in Dallas on July 13, 2008.

Disco Triathlon
Sprint Distance - 500 yard swim, 17.6 mile bike, 5k
Olympic Distance 1500 yard swim, 23 mile bike, 10k
Race Day - Sunday, July 13, 2008, Lake Ray Roberts, Valley View, TX (North of DFW)

http://www.discotriathlon.com/

It won't be super huge.

And if you want a place to stay... we can talk beforehand... and see if you staying at my place would work out. I just say we talk beforehand so it's not like we are a couple of strangers. But I'm doing this race, so it would work out.

Otherwise, I don't know of any other Oly's happening in the DFW area before 8-31-08. I looked, because I wanted to a couple, but could only find this one.

Thanks for looking and for the offer. I actually have family in DFW and my best friend lives off of Tarrant Pkwy. The only thing is that I will have started my residency on July 1st and won't know if I will have that weekend off for quite a while (50/50 chance). If I end up doing it I will let you know.

Thanks!!

As I was reading your post, I was thinking: Route 66. I'm the Asst. RD for the Sprint on Saturday and I'm doing the Oly on Sunday.
Let's see:
1. There's the Topeka Tinman on June 14th. Here's the site. It's just slightly longer than an oly. Swim 1100 yards, Bike 19.7miles, Run 7 miles http://www.topekatinman.com/
2. This is in July tho, so you may not be able to do it. Midwest Mayhem on July 20th in Lawrence, KS. http://www.midwestmayhemtriathlon.com/
3. There's a tri in Orange Beach on May 3rd. Just a little shorter than an oly. Swim 1000 yards, Bike 19.5 miles, Run 4.5 miles http://www.team-magic.com/

Other than those, there's not much around for June in this part of the country. It's just too hot. You could always do the Kansas 70.3 in late June...:D

I wish I could do the 70.3 but don't think I could make it through that. I think I will decide which to do after March 20th - hopefully some of these races will still be open then. And I may just say forget the wedding (I'm not a wedding person anyways - is that wrong), hope to get moved immediately after my graduation, and do Route 66 as that one seems like the best option for me. If I end up in Wichita I will look more into the two up there (probably the one in Topeka), or Texas try for the Austin one. The one in Orange Beech - I just don't think I'm ready for a gulf swim. My OWS skills just aren't that great. I might be swept out to sea. :eek:Eh - I just wish I knew where I was going so I could make more definite plans. At least I have some races that I can think about now.

Oh, and as far as the heat goes - I can't decide if it is hotter in the OK area than AL or if the AL people are crazy when it comes to heat  as most of our short distance races are June through August with one almost every weekend within a two hour drive. But then again, if the wind hits 15mph they run for cover :D

I think people in the South are tough when it comes to heat. We did a sprint in southern Louisiana in late July last year. Although it was only a sprint, and I finished by 9:30, I was dying in the humidity. It was suffocating. I'm sure Alabama is quite the same. No wind, true, but the humidity was torture (but the post race gumbo was quite a different treat than what I'm used to around here ;)).
If you relocate to OK, and are doing Route 66 (heck- blow off the wedding and send a nice gift instead), I'd love to hang out with you. If it makes your decision any easier: we have an all you can drink post race beer truck, tons of food, and the craziest RD you'll ever meet.

hehe - you are making it very tempting. I will know on March 20th where I am moving to, and will make my decision then. if I am heading to OK (cross your fingers here), I will sign up. My family will be in AL 2 weeks before for graduation and I need their help to move and I really don't want to be stuck in an apartment for that long without furniture! Hope to see ya there, and I'll keep ya updated on my future relocation.

It may be a little far for you, but there is the Kiawah Triathlon on September 21. It is just below Charleston, SC.

So I am moving to Temple, Tx at Scott and White hospital. It is 1/2 way between Austin and Waco. I don't see any Oly tris in the area that are between my move and when I start residency, but there are plenty of Oly and 1/2IM in the area. Once I get my call schedule I will enter a race.

(yeah - I have been doing the longer workouts for base and now I am considering a 1/2 IM - yes, I am crazy)

Yay, I'm glad that you know where you'll be residing (mostly not at home, tho ) for the next few years. It's a pretty nice area down there. North/Central TX has some fine races in the summer. You'll have LOTS to choose from. And a HIM? You ARE crazy (and wicked dedicated to be taking that on along with residency).
Congrats on receiving your destination.
