View Full Version : Wearing jewellery while cycling

I'm pretty boring...even before taking up cycling again, I never wore much jewellry.

I wear pierced earrings and like to wear this jewellry because people will see it when they see my face. So on bike, I tend to wear 1 of 2 pairs out of 15 pairs, which will stay in place without falling out of earlobes.. I wear real silver or gold, so I don't want $$ lost while cycling. I do wear handmade, artistic earrings since it's my only type of jewellry I wear on my body. Meanwhile I have a beautiful collection of predominantly silver earrings that I don't wear as often because of cycling... flying phoenix birds, silver swans, silver leafy boughs, silver lilybuds, silver aboriginal raven's heads, etc.

I don't wear any rings on or off bike. When I started cycling again, I forgot to wear my gold and silver neckchains. Yes I have my casual pendants on string/rope...usually I carry them and put them on when I get to work, off bike.

I always wear the same jewelry. I sleep in it, too. It's just easier for me that way.

Oh shootingstar, you don't know boring! I have one set of piercings (ears) and wear very little jewelery. When I do, it comes off as soon as I get in the house - rings included. Not sure what I am going to do when SO and I get married April 26!

I forgot..my watch is I guess, jewellry too even though highly durable

I've heard different things about people who wear rings...guess it depends if it's a real rock and if can fit through the snuggly bike glove..

I have a plain, somewhat thick gold wedding band and a diamond solitaire engagement ring. Sometimes I forget to take the diamond off when I ride. Lots of times I just leave it in a drawer for months at a time and just wear the gold band.

I was SO glad I wasn't wearing the diamond when I crashed. I landed on the left side, and my hand got completely cut up by the gold band, and the gold band is all chewed up with big divots out of it. The diamond setting would have been demolished.

Wedding band, Miraculous Medal, and small hoop earrings (multiple piercings in my ears--legacy of my '80s punk rock girl days)

My wedding band is set with a single row of small diamonds. I don't often take it off, just on account-a, except for weightlifting when I can just tuck it in the hem of my shorts for a few minutes, or tie it to a shoelace. Sometimes I take it off to work on the motorcycle, and then I wind up forgetting where I put it (usually in the pocket of my jeans ). It's beautiful, but I'm always afraid for it. And the stones tend to cut my kayak paddle grips and catch on my gloves.

Other than that I don't wear a lot of jewelry - my ears have one piercing but I don't even wear earrings every day. Necklaces sometimes, bracelets never - they're just in my way. Haven't worn a watch since I got a cell phone.

I lost my diamond solitaire playing baseball with my son. :''''( (my husband has not replaced it, yet, but at our 20th, he's going to whether he wants to or not!) So that leaves the two bands with little diamonds. I haven't had them off since my last back surgery in 1994--since the diamond is gone I don't have to worry about the gloves.

I'm glad you weren't wearing your diamond, too. It was so heartbreaking to lose mine. I'm still a little mad at my husband for not going out and buying me a new one but he also knows I wouldn't want to make payments on it. Our insurance had recently been changed and the jewelry rider was left off so I couldn't even claim it!!

I always wear earrings--dangley ones, mostly. I use the little rubber tubes on the backs of French wires so they stay in no matter what. I have those earrings with little bikes on them that someone posted here once--they have a unique clasp that stays locked.

I take jewelry off when I ride. Have lost earrings in helmet straps, hands swell, so the rings go, and the watch goes too (have bike computer if I really want to know the time).

The only jewelry I wear daily is a necklace, which I'll wear for months at a time, and sleep with it. I wear a leather cord with something lightweight on it, my favourite is a rounded "cube" of blue glass with a piece of metal foil in it, it catches the light beautifully :)

Can't stand wearing anything on my hands, if I put a bracelet or rings on for a party I end up fiddling with them all evening, taking them off and losing them somewhere. Which is a bit unfortunate, as I recently inherited a really nice diamond ring from my grandmother, that I'd like to wear. I'm thinking of having it made into an earring instead and getting my ears pierced.

I have a really nice bracelet with a fleur-de-lis design made out of a bicycle spoke by a guy at Cycles d'Oro in Greensboro NC. I always get comments on it, and I love that it's made out of a spoke.

Ditto, except that my wedding band often stays on (plain platinum band). That's only because it's too small and I can't get it off easily anyway. :o

I just would tend to forget where I temporarily put down a piece of expensive jewellery .. This is why I have stayed away from rings since I work with oil and acrylic paints, etc. There have been occasions where I've run around trying to find my watch at home. Usually it is in an obvious place.

I love thick single bracelet that I wear part way up my arm. Not jangly (charm) bracelets. Again I have to put on the bracelet at work after I change out of my cycling clothing.

So for me, to pack jewellery ..in order to wear it later on in day, is abit of rare event, because of extra step and making sure ..I repack the piece in my pannier. Not leave it behind somewhere else.

I wear a daily pair of freshwater pearl earrings on silver wires that are bent in zigzag shape as part of the design...different but also very practical. Will not fall out while on bike.

for tris, bike marathons etc. I wear a pentagram. other than that nothing. Except if I forget to take it off.

Edit. I don't wear nothing but the pentagram. I mean no jewelry during training. LOL.

I'm pretty plain-jane when it comes to jewellery. All I wear on my bike are a watch, my wedding bands, and a silver rope necklace with a Maori greenstone pendant which is supposed to bring the wearer strength. I need all of that I can get. I probably shouldn't wear it cycling, but it was given to me by a dear friend and I just can't seem to take it off.
I have a few flash pieces I can wear when I have to do the formal thing, which fortunately isn't very often. My only real concession to jewellery is my watch collection, which is kinda out of control at this point.

I'll wear my wedding band and maybe a pair of stud earrings. A necklace or bracelet would bother me, I think.

Daily I wear my wedding band, engagement ring, watch, and just started wearing mom's ring and necklace. For riding, I only wear my wedding band. When I first got engaged I would wear full finger gloves with my ring on, but it was a bit uncomfortable and just not worth the risk.

Riding, I wear my wedding ring, a rope bracelet that has only been off my arm a handful of times (to much of a pain to take off and put back on), and sometimes my necklace.

School days, I limit my jewelry because I go to school in a less than desireable area. Watch, wedding ring, necklace, bracelet.

Work and church days, in addition to the school day jewelry, I have a ring for the other hand and earrings.

All of my jewelry was given to me by DH with the exeception of my necklace. It was the first piece of jewelry that I bought for myself after high school. The pendent on it is a half of a quarter that at one time DH had the other half, my daughter now has that half.

I wear my wedding rings. A simple handmade sterling silver band and a really neat set moonstone ring we got in Sydney Austrelia. I wear earings sometimes. And I also wear a lot of handmade necklaces.

Daily I wear my wedding ring and engagement ring, but do not riding. My wedding band is small with channel set diamonds and would fit fine, but my hand swells uncomfortably. My engagement ring wouldn't fit comfortably under gloves. The other ring I wear daily is my college ring but again swelling and bulk make it uncomfortable cycling. I wear all three running if I have them on, but usually leave them home. Salt build up from sweating is just icky on my jewelry!

On the bike I wear a small teardrop pendant my husband gave me, tiny diamond studs and tiny silver hoops. I only take any of those off to clean them, or to wear fancier earrings. And I cycle in a Timex Ironman watch.

I wear a fair amount (not Mr. T or anything;)) of jewelry off the bike, but before a ride it all comes off except for the diamond studs in my second earpiercings (these never come out). I don't like the feel of rings or bracelets in my gloves or earrings rubbing/catching on helment straps. I don't guess a necklace would bother me, but since everything else is coming off -- it does too!

Where'd you find the ravens, and how do I get a pair??
:D

As for wearing stuff while riding? I always wear two gold wedding bands - mine on my wedding finger, and my man's on my thumb of the same hand as he has a joint problem which means he can't wear his except for very short periods of time. Unless we are going to a funeral or wedding I always wear two wedding bands.

I have a pounamu necklace I wear most of the time and often wear that while riding/racing.

I have a silver pentacle bracelet which I wear most of the year and that stays on whilst cycling.

All other jewellery comes off. I often wear 3 necklaces (a bone carving of a lioness and amethyst with a silver crescent moon wrapped onto it) and at work I wear loads of bracelets - all mingled which probably bothers some people but when you love them all how do you choose (fresh water pearls, silver bangles, paua and silver, gold twists etc...). The gold stuff gows on my wedding band arm, the silver on my pentacle necklace side...

When I do wear earrings I only ever wear one at a time - but never when riding/racing. I wear an anklet in summer, but again, never when on the bike.

Ravens in jewellery, meaning a native Indian (or in Canada we call "aboriginal") is a common design in the Vancouver area. Not so much in central and eastern Canada.

You have to come to the Pacific Northwest coast... I would tend to choose a real silversmith. Anyway my ears require real metal because allergic to other materials.

Some of your necklaces seem lovely in design.

This same question was asked to guys...and there were all sorts of stories about bashed up rings, swollen finger for wedding band while exercising, etc.

I always take off my wedding band. Its a thin platinum band with a row of inset diamonds. I love it, but I never wore jewelry before I got married and I find it really distracting when I work out. Sometimes I go for days before I remember to put it back on

Does my Road ID count as jewelry? I always wear two when I ride: one on my ankle and one on my wrist. www.roadid.com

My info has changed, and now I want to get a Road ID Interactive so I can update and won't be needing a new info plate each time info changes.

And... the ankle ID holds a Champion Chip comfortably!

I'm a member of an Episcopal religious order. One of my vows is that I have to wear the symbol ( a cross) daily. I usually put it on in the morning and take it off at night. I've found if I do a morning ride and don't put it on, it stays in my jewelry box all day

My ti/red gold no stone wedding band only comes off to wrench on the car.
Otherwise I usually only wear jewelery when I'm playing dress-up.

I used wear a lot of jewelry. Now I wear my wedding band, which is a skinny gold band with a circle of diamonds and my birthstone ring (golden topaz), which my dad brought back from Japan for me when I was 13. I also wear earrings, usually a pair of larger gold studs. Oh yes, and a watch. When I am dressed for work or something more than lounging around, I usually have a bracelet on, too. Most of those I inherited from my mom; a couple were gift from my husband.
When I ride, I keep the rings on. Once in awhile, the birthstone bothers me under full fingered gloves, but then I will turn it around or adjust it and it's fine. If I want to wear a watch while riding, I have a plastic Nike watch that Trek Travel gave me for going on 2 tours with them. It has a lot of features I don't use. I never use my HR monitor anymore; I was paying more attention to it than to enjoying my ride.
I recently stopped wearing my earrings while riding; the holes where my ears are pierced are enlarged and I can't wear anything except studs with the big plastic backs. I lost the earrings Steve bought me for Mother's Day last year when I was taking my hat off at the theatre a couple of months ago. They are constantly falling out of my ears just from a slight touch, so I quit wearing them because the helmet sometimes knocks them out. I want to have surgery to fix the piercings, but insurance doesn't pay for it; I am going to save up and have it this year, hopefully.

I'm a goldsmith, and I'd strongly advise against wearing rings when riding. A fall would jeapordize most types of settings, making it likely that stones could be lost. Semi precious stones are especially vulnerable to breaking, so Brandi, if you love that moonstone, take it off before you ride!

Maillotpois, your ring may not be destined to have those dents forever. Have your jeweler take a look at it. She may be able to remove some of the lesser damage, and minimize the bad dents through sanding and polishing.

My husband wears his Timex Ironman Watch and his silver chain with a cross. He has a silver wedding band in addition to his actual band which is gold with diamonds. The silver one he wears to work at his plant nursery.

Sad story.... The first Christmas we were a couple (10 years ago) I purchased him a silver chain. A couple summers ago he was working a terrible job and I bought him a handsome cross to comfort him. Last fall we were riding and the chain and cross fell off. The chain was inexpensive but the sentimental value to him was huge. Moral of the story? Check your clasps and prongs often.

I prefer not to ride with my rings so I don't risk losing a stone. I also don't want to have what happened to my Pawpaw- he had his wedding band cut off while getting a work injury tended to and the emergency room staff lost it! My rings are insured but what a headache to get a new stone.

Got my ears pierced when I turned 15, and have probably only had a dozen days since then without earrings of some sort in them (and I'm 50 now). I feel naked without them, it's part of getting dressed. Nothing fancy or too big or long, just small post in upper holes and small to med hoop or dangle in lower holes. Wear wedding set (gold band w/one diamond + engagement band with center ruby flanked by two small diamonds) and anniversary band even when riding. Low profile so fit under gloves fine. Used to wear necklaces all the time but last few years find they bug me after a couple hours, especially if I'm sweating, so mostly wear them when "dressing up". Batteries in all 4 watches died within 6 months of each other about 10 years ago. Never replaced the batteries and haven't worn one since. Time shows on computer and 3 walls at work, 2 walls at home, oven, microwave, coffee pot, alarm clock, computer, cell phone, camera, in my car ........... I get by just fine without a watch. :)

Can't wear my rings on the bike, even if I wanted to. My hands swell. (Same when I'm running... or any sport, for that matter... or on a plane.) I always put my rings in the very same place in my apartment, and never ever take them off and put them, say, in my pockets. I would be really angry with myself if I lost them...

I don't wear earrings when I do sports, either. I can't bear the thought of what it would do to my earlobes if I was in a crash or something. Too much of a risk for very little aesthetic benefit, in my book of course. Note that I wear very little jewelry anyway.

So that leaves only my RoadID, which I wear in my neck (Fixx). It has a little flower etched on it...! And my sports watch, a Timex Triathlon that I definitely wouldn't call jewelry!
