How do you keep in shape, other than biking?

oh, and if you vote for "other", please state what the "other" is!!

in addition to yoga, you might have noticed from other posts, I do kickboxing. and I walk to work most days - round trip 5 km

I voted pilates because I do it almost every day. But I do yoga once a week, walk to work (if I don't ride my adorable little hybrid), and play with the dog for hours. (Want a workout? Give an aussie a tug toy.)

you've got a lucky dog, Jennifer!!

2 border collies here. 2 short walks on most days, longer ones when I have time and the weather is nice. both are drawn to swamps and the feces of various animals....(cow is overwhelming, but bear smells worse), so do not have the honour of mountain biking with us any longer. Lucky for them my other passion is taking photos outdoors. many long relaxing (for me, not for them) walks on sunny days!!

Dogs do get you out, don't they? Mine gets a walk 3 or 4 times a day, and when the days get longer, many evening trips to the dog park. And he goes everywhere with us ... he loves geocaching! And I keep telling him if he's a very good boy he'll get a little friend soon ...

That's the reason we have two! we both work full time....so we hope that they play and are entertained with each other when we're not around (and chasing the 2 cats doesn't really count. heehe) Our first 4 legged furry kid passed away from cancer....we got our second just after he was diagnosed and,you know, those last 17 months that he had a buddy, our Yogi was happier than he had ever been. We hadn't realized he was lonely! Now we will never have another lonely only. But it does increase everything....food, time, vet bills, grooming costs, etc....and they don't come with us as often as Yogi used to - you never know when the folks at the other end will have a problem with 2 somewhat good but sometimes a bit wired border collies!! But don't feel bad for them - they do get lots of walks (yes, more when the days are longer, for sure!) and the property across the lane from us is a nice trailed wooded strip of land....they LOVE it!!

get the little buddy. you'll be happy you did!!

it's more a question of real estate than wanting the new pup. The yard isn't THAT big, which is why he gets so many walks (and I do too, walking from work back home at lunch is a nice break).

But soon ... house hunting has begun, and dog-friendly yards are on the top of the list!

I think it's cool. None of us participate in team sports to keep in shape. wow. I feel so at home with all of you ladies!! Thank you!

Well, I do play a team sport, but it's a social thing - we were wooden spooners in our grade. :p

I do Aikido, a non violent Japanese martial art. My teacher does yoga for her crosstraining and she bike rides! She's even got a custom Eisentraut! Anyway our warmups include Yoga poses but I can't honestly say I do Yoga and flexibility is my Achiles heel. I'd like to do more. This should be my "major" sport, been at it close to 30 years and I do love it. Yet when I'm in the dojo, nice weather and see cyclists whizz by I almost bolt for the door and my training partners complain that i whine a lot then ;-)

I'll have to try the opposite; bike past the dojo and do I feel like "I wanna be in there". I think I would. I'm flu'ish today and just found out one of my favorite instructors is staying at and training in our school for a while, as if I didn't feel bad enough already.

Thanks gals for reminding me...hey, It's all crosstraining!

If I get off BART early enough I walk part way to work.

Gym or walk near the lake at lunch which takes some care, I have to watch that I don't get to lunch time hungry or I just wanna **eat**. So I keep tea, lots of water and lots of healthy snacks at my desk.

I was doing the occaisional spin class but my favorite spin instructor has quit my gym and I do not like her replacement so we'll see....

I looooove to swim and would like to work that in somehow.

I have a dog and try to walk her twice a day. My patio is very small and Mae is only now getting so she does not go Cujo notso dog when she see's another dog. She's a pound pet and has made great strides, she's a different dog than I adopted and I'm very proud of her. but I'm not sure she's ready for another dog.

LTBC There is a fatal flaw in your survey. It is set up to allow only one choice. As you can see from responses, that is rarely the case. So I was stuck choosing "other".
Other in my case, means: running, lifting weights, yoga, and spinning. Nothing exotic like martial arts, although that certainly sounds very cool. Just lots and lots of everything else.

None of us participate in team sports to keep in shape. wow.

Actually, at least one of us participates in team sports :) I didn't vote because I couldn't figure out how to select multiple things. In addition to cycling, I run and I play soccer.

I've played in various soccer leagues over the years. I'm in two right now, a co-ed one and a "masters" women's league. "Masters" is a code word for those of us over 30. One of the women on my team is 60, quite the inspiration!

Wooden Spooners?? Is that a NZ thing or am I just That outta touch with team sports? :confused:To win the wooden spoon = to place dead last. We didn't win a game all season! Our closest scoreline was 4-6, and that was against the team that came last in the grade just above us. We did, however, improve a lot as the season progressed.

If I had to pick one, I would pick running, since I do that more than anything else (5 times a week.) But I spin once a week, yoga once a week, and swim once every two weeks, maybe (when the weather is just too awful for biking or running.) Yesterday, I got to cross-country ski (a rare but beautiful thing here in southwest Virginia.)

I had a similar, multiple cross training issue, problem with the survey. I chose weight lifting, but I also do kickboxing, yoga pilates mix, and trail work to cross train. Ever try raking wet leaves for five hours.....whooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! :p Trails drain great now though. ;)

so is there a way to make a poll allow for multiple answers???

btw, I am SERIOUSLY impressed with how much all of you do. I've been pretty proud of myself for doing the few things I do: it used to be walking (stomping) to work, weights and yoga in the off season. Now I've pretty much dropped the weights and do kickboxing 3 nights a week. I do a one hour class that I wish was 1 1/2 hours!! For the last 2 weeks I've done 2 classes in a row when I can arrange to leave work early...that's pretty fun!

Anyway, I originally started the poll because I'd tried that free pilates dvd that came in the cereal box....and it was the high performance one, and after doing mountain biking, kickboxing and yoga, I found pilates completely lame. Like I was always being told to hold back....which is what I do personality wise in the real world so I figure that if I wanna get something out of exercise I have to go hard (yes, even with yoga....get as deep as I can....and the arm balances take lots of practice!)....so I kind of wondered if anybody else who's tried both actually liked pilates.

oh, and I"m way too much of a spaz to do any sport that involves a ball....or a team. except a 24 hour team. heehee

Great responses, everybody! And great ideas!!

Namaste,
~T~

I didn't take the survey, but I have done Pilates (not too much this year...). It can be incredibly intensive. You need to find a good instructor who has had the proper training. The certification to be a Pilates instructor is quite rigorous. I saw major good changes in my body from it; lengthening, muscular strength. I have been weight training for the past 4 months, with a trainer and while I am definitely stronger, I don't see the same kinds of changes as i did from Pilates. I tried Yoga once and hated it. Too "meditative/spiritual" for me. I walk, hike, cross country ski, and do spin (in the winter for the last one). Last year I tried running, which dropped the pounds, but made me very sore for cycling. I couldn't improve much past a 10 minute mile, which sucks. So, I am pretty much going to give that up. I did aerobics and step for about 20 years, ten as an instructor. I haven't been to a class in about a year and a half, but once in awhile I think about going back. I just like being outside too much, so except for things that you have to do in a gym, I prefer that.

ski bike bike bike ski

occasional hill walking, power walks, and occasional lifting but I just hate the gym/inside. I do a lot of stretching.

I took up Tai-Chi about a year ago and I'm crazy about it. The slow movements coupled with breathing exercises is very relaxing and my flexibility has really increased. A few years ago I had to face the fact that I was never going to be Gumby-Woman and on top of that moving into my 50's certainly wasn't helping anything. I realized I needed to do something to help my flexibility. I know people who love Yoga but for whatever reason I just can't get into it. So I tried Tai-chi and just really enjoy it.

hey cruziegirl! Isn't it fantastic when you find something that's just perfect for you? some things take awhile to be fabulous....like road riding...and even walking....but the things I love: mountain biking, yoga, kick boxing, they were all awesome the first time out, even though I was a complete spaz! guess that means we all have to keep trying new things so we don't get bored - in body or in mind!
