I couldn't do this...I know my weight fluctuates up to 3 lbs. or more during the day.

The best thing for me to maintain a good healthy weight (other than just good diet) is for me to have so much fun cycling or another physical activity for a few hrs., that I'm not paying attention to my weight...and end up losing it/maintaining it ok in the end.

It possible I have gained weight now or not. I'm not sure. Last weigh-in was about 3 wks. ago. Since we lack floor space in bathroom, we keep the scale on a shelf in a storage closet.

True, I have gone for 4 months and have forgotten to weigh myself.

So in interim, I just wear clothing that tends to fit me and a few pieces that are well-fitted which I enjoy wearing. These help remind me of any umm...expansion. ;) Very loose clothing does not look good on me anyway, given a petite short bone frame. So yea, my objective is to still fit clothing from 10-15 years ago....which I deliberately keep such pieces.

But everyone's different.

Nah, I always forget. So I end up stepping on the scale every couple of weeks. Usually my weight is in the mid-to-high 120s. If it gets above 130, I'll know because of my clothes and how I feel. If it gets below, same thing. In summer I'm happy to be in the low-to-mid 120s, but in winter, I don't mind a bit extra to keep me warm.

Most of my adult life, until the fall of 2006 (when my marriage was falling apart and I realized I hated my job and that it was up to me to find/make happiness), I was low-to-mid 140s. I lost 20ish, gained 5ish, and it's stayed that way without any extra effort (just the normal eating healthily and staying active).

I do weigh daily, but

a) I'm a member of WW, so it's kind of at the front of my mind right now (currently half way to my goal weight) and

b) because my weight fluctuates (like shootingstart, up to 3lbs per day), I like to see the whole week's worth of weights so I can get a better picture of how much I've lost over the week. If I only weigh once per week, I might weigh on a "heavy" day and feel more disappointed than I should.

I also take tape measurements once a week, since that seems to give a more accurate picture of what's going on that just weight alone.

You look great! :) Thom even said so after Eastern Sierra. Well, great wasn't exactly his phrase.

I do better at maintaining my weight when I weigh myself daily.

When I'm on a good cycle, eating well and working out, I weight daily, and it helps me stay on task. When I fall off the wagon for either diet or exercise and I know I'm not doing well, I avoid the scale until I climb back on the healthy-eating/exercise wagon again.

I like to weigh every day. I don't fluctuate much day to day, just for about 2 weeks of the month building up to guess-what? I can just take that into account, and there is always a little drop afterward.

I only weigh myself when I'm feeling particularly thin or particularly fat to make sure I'm still within my ideal range. Otherwise, I stay off the scale. I had a handful of years where my eating was sort of disordered and I weighed myself all the time. I've come a long way from those days, but weighing myself more often than every so often reminds me of not-so-good times. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with weighing yourself every day; it just doesn't work for me.

When I'm trying to lose weight, I weigh myself every morning, same time, same situation. I know my weight fluctuates so I dont' get bent out of shape if I'm up or down one day but I watch for patterns over time. I also weigh myself just before I go to bed and I'm always amazed to see how I lose 1-3 lbs every night.

Thanks V...and tell Thom I said thanks too. ;)

I honestly don't do it for appearances sake. It's all about power/weight ratio for climbing. I'm such a dork! :D

It seems to me you're doing pretty well.
Me - I've got the power. But I'm not built to be a fast climber. I even have a doctor's note saying so.

Is your first double Mulholland?

Thanks V. :)

My first double is actually in 2.5 weeks. Butterfield is up first on 2/16, Hemet on 4/5, Mulholland 4/12, Heartbreak 5/24 and Grand Tour Triple 6/28.

I was just going to ask you what was on your plate this year.

You have some tough ones on there! My schedule this year was dictated by what's closest to home and requires the least childcare. :p

I do weigh daily, first thing in the am. I too fluctuate within a range, so I enter it in a spreadsheet and plot my weekly averages. I only freak out if my average weekly weight goes above range, and then I know I need to cut back until its back down, or rather thats my plan although since I lost my weight that hasn't happened yet, but I do think when I have a week where I am at the high end of the range I intuitively cut back on things like alcohol and chocolate and then I come right back down to the low end of my range. I NEVER freak out if my weight is at the high end of my range for a single day, cuz I know its due to changes in fluid balance.

I too got into this habit when I was losing weight, cuz it was the only way to detect a slow but sure loss. But it does help me maintain my weight loss. Knowledge is power.

We keep the scale in the bathroom for lack of storage space!!

I weigh myself every day out of habit. It started when I picked up cycling big time and lost a few pounds, making my mother worried. So I was making sure that I was not going down or even too close to 115. (I am regularly 120-122 at 5'4".) Now that my weight is extremely stable, I mostly step on the scale before and after runs to see if I've lost too much water...

I stop thinking about it as soon as I step down and it has no connection with my eating, I think.

I recently started weighing daily in the morning, after dropping 12 very unhealthy pounds since fall. I'm considering getting back to keeping the info in a spreadsheet again. Our scale tells us fat %age, muscle mass and a few other things, so the reasons for changes in weight can be seen. It's nice to see when the weight has gone up if it's muscle or not. :p I'm pretty much at my target weight, but want to increase muscle mass, so I'm increasing my workouts now and trying to be smart about it. Between my clothes, the mirror and my DH, I know the weight loss looks good on me. :p I'm hoping it will translate into speed and power on the bike, too.

Hugs and butterflies,
~T~

I do weigh myself everyday,in the morning. If I don't, I can get off track with my eating. I know I gain about 2 pounds over the course of a day, and that is normal for me. It is gone the next morning. I used lose a couple of lbs. after a long ride or work out, but that doesn't seem to happen any more.
I also know by the feel of my clothes. At my height (barely 5' 1") even an ounce makes a difference. Then I cut back on high glycemic carbs, wine, etc.
I lost about 6 lbs when I was sick last fall. I got back to my regular weight around the end of December (it was nice to be told to gain weight), and now I am taking a medication that has weight gain as a side effect. I noticed I had gained about 5 lbs. when I got back from vacation, despite 4 days of strenuous x country skiing. So, now I am really watching what I eat. I've lost about 2 of the pounds, but it's pretty hard for me to lose weight under normal circumstances. I've weighed around 105 for most of my life since high school, except for when I was teaching aerobics and I got down to 90 . I started gaining in my late forties and that's when I started cycling.

I have noticed that the more frequently I weigh myself / think constantly about what I eat, I seem to gain weight or feel heavier...which is half of the time, my imagination.

I'm probably obsessive in other areas of my life, so prefer to not add the weight matter to more things.

Would be of value that I weigh myself now after I had my homemade birthday dinner yesterday when my partner spent several hrs. dreaming up the lovely gourmet dishes? I have to be abit insane to get on the scale now...

I weigh myself at the gym, whenever I go. This can be anything from 2 to 7 days a week, depending on the season and my schedule. Like mak, it keeps me honest. But I also know that my weight fluctuates (unlike most of y'all I'm heavier in the mornings - and when I've gained 4 lbs overnight I can be sure it's bloating!) so I don't freak out about small variations.

Yeah, I weigh myself at the gym too, which works out to about twice a week. If there weren't scales at the gym, I wouldn't have a clue what I weighed, but it's nice to have that check there to keep me honest. :) Once I get back under 60kg/132lbs (being back to regular work hours should make that relatively easy - there's no snacking on rubbish when you've only got what you brought in with you... :p), I doubt I'll bother at all. :)

I weigh pretty much daily, in the morning.
I spent my teens and early 20's yo-yo'ing between around 110 to my high of 175 even though I was very physically active mostly biking - too many burgers and beer I guess. Finally in 95-96 I changed the way I ate and have kept my weight between 125 and 135 since - two 50-pound gain pregnancies aside.

I lost all 50 pounds in 6 weeks with my first. Just lots of nursing...I was eating tons and not exercising because of some pretty severe tears. But I'd run all through that pregnancy so I was in pretty good shape overall. With my second I started WW at 6wpp as I still had 30 pounds to loose, 6w before I needed to return to work and two pairs of pants that fit - one with a hole in the butt. :D

Anyway, even though its been over 10 years at a healthy weight I still get a little paranoid about gaining. Weighing myself helps me remain mentally in check.

I'm 5'10... that said, I want to get down to 85kg, I reckon that will be light enough before beginning to compromise power/weight.
Even then, I'll still be hauling 15kg more than you up a hill - but I bet I'd catch up REAL fast on the down-side :p

Oh... and I'm real glad to see you are off eating cake (avatar words) - but at 5:45am???

I hope I don't sound snarky, but how is this possible? Doesn't it violate some law of physics? (I should know which one but it's been too long. My deepest apologies to sir Isaac.) ;)

I can see your stomach swelling overnight (well, not literally, but you know what I mean) but not your weight actually increasing.

But I don't have a scale, so I don't really have a clue how my weight fluctuates daily. I weigh myself when I'm at the pool once a week or so and can usually guess my weight accurately within a pound. Except for that beached whale thing I do once a month.

Probably :)

But more likely because I don't weigh myself at home. When I weigh myself in the evening, it's not right before bed. I'll have dinner afterward and plenty of water. Then in the mornings when I'm at the gym, I'll have had a light breakfast, and even my morning "constitutional" (sorry TMI) doesn't eliminate all the extra food and water.

But even so, I do retain quite a bit of water at certain times of the month and it does seem like it ought to be physically impossible
