....energy bar wrappers we throw away?

Clif Bars in association with TerraCycle will donate 2 cents per wrapper to a charity of your choice:

No offense, but can't they just donate the 2 cents and save me the postage and effort of rescuing a wrapper out of my sweaty jersey back pocket? :p

No, because then your sweaty jersey goes into the laundry with the wrapper still in the pocket, you pull the now crushed, wrinkled and laundered wrapper out of the drier and toss it in the trash. and it goes into landfill.

It's a tree hugger thang :D

Great idea.

I wish they'd extend it to gel pouches, I see so many of them littering the roads, may as well get something out of them.

(yep, I pick them up & dispose of them - most of the time :o )

I think it's a cool idea, but they're still going into the landfill, only they're making a minute donation to charity as well.

It doesn't help the landfill issues, but it might help reduce the number of wrappers on our streets and trails.

GU has a program to "Stash Your Trash"
http://www.gusports.com/html/stash_your_trash.htm

Turn in 50 wrappers and get 5 packs of GU.
Turn in 200 wrappers and get some kind of bonus.

I got the impression they are made into Terracycle products? Maybe I'm wrong. Would not be the first time.

Before you go and make a blanket statement like that, it might be worth checking to see if it's actually, like, correct.

From the link Trek420 provided:

As an eco-friendly innovator, TerraCycle is going to convert the used wrappers into unique accessories and other upcycled products.

The Wrapper Brigade program will donate 2 cents to charity for every used wrapper collected. TerraCycle said the used wrappers will be fused and woven into material that will be used to make items such as backpacks and gym totes that will be sold at participating retailers later this year.

Thank you jobob, for defending my honor :p ;)

I just think it's cool.

There are only so many energy bar wrappers I can keep as a spare patch for the tube. It would be good if clubs and events do this because at that scale $0.02 X number of bars consumed on a ride like Top Hat, MS 150s, ALC .... could really clean up (pun intended).

Cool! I'm glad that other companies do the recycling (and donating) thing also!!! I eat Clif bars, so now I know to save my wrappers.

I do the GU Stash your Trash thing. They give you one GU packet for every 10 you send in. We've saved up almost 200 now (when you send in 200 they give you extra cool stuff I hear). Not that it's about the free stuff, but it makes me feel good gathering up all the empty packets that I see on the ground. Sure, it's kinda gross picking up others trash, but that's what hand sanitizer is for. I watched a marathon in November and picked up about 50 alone that day (gloved hand and all). I know people thought I was a freak, but I'm not only saving the environment- I just got 5 free GUs.
