Just checking on the rest of the walking wounded on this fine Saturday morning.
Shoulders? I think we have two at the moment...
Scapula in bits and pieces ? How are you ????
CC??? How are you today?
Ankle?
Achilles Tendon ?
Flu and cold sufferers?
Knee tendonitis...sits and behaves, and does not feel much better. Is frustrated and a bit mad.....
Oh and Yoda...clamshells ....ouch, who knew I had those little muscles....

I had a catastrophic ankle sprain while I was trail running two weeks ago today. It's still swollen, my foot is still funny colors, and I can't do anything but walk and ride my bike- which stinks, because in crappy winter weather I prefer to run! I was also about to start a plyometric training program as well, but jumping is totally out of the question.
I've been posting progress/non-progress on my blog (links below).
I try to look on the bright side- if I wasn't healed enough to ride, I'd be going totally nuts right now!

Let's see .... I think not being on my bike is bad for me....
Since I've stayed off the Advil, and been eating yogurt, the mad tummy is no longer a problem.
Shoulder - two weeks into PT, it's improving. Although Tony was mean to me yesterday and pushed a bit harder while stretching out. BUT, I'm not completely wiped out when I come home from my session like I was before. Although yesterday I did hit the tylenol.
Cold - getting better (it's been a week, it HAS to be better), but I'm still sleeping with 4 pillows.
Tonight the shoulder will get the first real test - begging for Mardi Gras beads at a parade.

Hey Andrea...at least you can walk and ride....you are two up on me....
BMC, I had to stop taking the OTC stuff too. My stomach did a major revolt this week. I had heartburn so bad I could hardly swallow. I am not sure it was helping that much anyway.

The walking wounded check in - funny!!
I had such a busy week work wise, and that plus the less restrictive sling my ortho gave me (the ER sling binds tightly preventing movement and use of my hand) led to super achy arm and shoulder last night. I can't imagine doing much trainer work til it hurts less to jostle. That's ok because my mom's visiting from Maine and she's staying in the exercise room. :D
Today I will get most of my hair cut off. I cant even put it in a ponytail, so I gotta do something.
Sorry the knee's still being mean, RnR.
BMc - happy mardi gras!!! have fun!
Andrea - oh I am prone to ankle sprains and they blow. At least you're riding - that's probably good fot it anyway!

I'm still chomping down 800mg of ibuprofin 3 times a day. Seems to keep things under control. Yesterday I had to do a lot of data input, my wrists and hands were not happy.
My hair is getting longer, I've discovered I can't do the "hair flip" thing without grabbing my neck. Owww!

I feel like I'm whining but my foot still hurts. First thing in the morning and any time I have been sitting for a while I look and feel like I'm 90. Actually my 85 year old Mom walks better than I do and I could never keep up with my late paternal grandmother till she broke her hip at 99 so I aspire to feel 90. :o
With the remodel the bikes are upstairs, tarped and on the rack. I could ride of course but I need to reconfigure my schedule and make time for me. With work starting on the kitchen flooring on Monday I'm clearing things out of that area but I may have to say "stop, I need a ride or a workout now!" sometimes.
I need to lift, stretch and loose weight or at least 2 out of 3.

:) I'm getting quite a bit closer to the goal.. I'm not there yet & still have to work on core strength plus getting the glutes & hammies stronger. My knee/leg still "wobbles" a bit but 'that'll hopefully stop once my hammies & glutes are up dere ya know..
I'm happy that i can cycle "normally"-I think I had a mental block about the tightness around my knee and just needed the confirmation from the physio that it's ok & give it a go. YAY..:D
I missed going to the pool this week as our car died & was only fixed yesterday :(
I went to my pilates studio and worked on core strengthening stuff for my sholder. I think half of the problem with my clavicle bugging me again is i'm not using the right muscles plus lack core stuff..
So, I am going to work towards the goal of cycling outside by mid feb. I have a bit to go but if i work on the strengthening exercises I should get there.
off to the beach a bit later for a long walk

First PT is scheduled for Monday, but I think I did some damage today. DH and I went out snowmobiling, and 8 hours/230 miles later, my shoulder is KILLING ME! Guess I should probably rethink that MTB ride in the snow/ice tomorrow, huh?

Shefly,
Sounds like you and I are cut from the same cloth. I just read your post to my DH and said...seeee.....I am not the only one that has a hard time resting.
I have been driving him crazy. He finally asked me to do nothing for an entire week to see if it helped. Not that I had been doing much, just swimming. But after two weeks of very little improvement he said...please, just try.
So I have been good since Tuesday. Light weights upper body, all seated that is it. But I keep trying to make deals with him. " Honey, if it feels better by mid-week, do you think I could try the pool again? "
I just feel the clock ticking and my training slipping away...my season getting closer and here I sit!!! I will probably have to rethink my race season. No way I will be ready by May if this keeps going.
Oh well...patience, books, pots of soup.
But today I am going outside...even if I just have to stand there and suck in fresh air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CC glad you're progressing. :)
I remember once snowmobiling and losing all feeling in my arm for about a month. When we did it this month in Tahoe, the snowmobiles had a lot less vibration so it wasn't a problem. Boy it's fun getting out there - I can see why you couldn't resist.
So yesterday I cut my hair - short. I had fairly long (and thick/curly) hair, which has been long most of my life, but right now I can't even put it in a ponytail with one hand. It was driving me crazy - and since I won't be able to raise my arm for 2 months, I figured I would just make that easier to deal with. (I have enough trouble putting on socks w/1 hand - let's at least make something easier!!!) My stylish is an athlete - she understands.
I've ordered 2 different slings, one pointed out to me by Wahine, so that when I set up the bike on the trainer next week I won't have to worry about my arm jostling. I have not even looked at the team's training calendar (which I created) to see which rides I will for sure miss. Not ready yet. :o

Hee-hee! Unfortunately, my DH is my enabler. Even if I wanted to rest, he would have none of it :p. This is the same guy who was on his trainer three days after surgery for a torn meniscus this year....
I did go out for my MTB ride today. Probably shouldn't have, but couldn't resist. Spent 2 hours riding in the snow and ice - hard going, but fun. My shoulder is pretty sore now, so I think I will rest now - at least until tomorrow :D.
Now - Rocknrollgirl - listen to your hubby :p

p.s.
MP - I can totally understand how your arm could fall asleep after riding a snowmobile. The sleds have gotten much better in their design, however, but 8 hours on one is enough to make any tired and sore!

CC - eventually, so long as knee doesn't continue to create more. Ask your doc.
Note to self - your shoulder hates you, do not try yanking the cord to start the lawn mower with that arm again. :( Get the electronic ignition on the skinking mower fixed. (there are cool season weeds that need beating into submission)
Note to brain - WHY did you wake me up this morning with a migraine????? I have kept the body hydrated, you really shouldn't have done this to me.

I've heard sheep do a good job as well! Can you find one near you & perhaps hire it for a few days?
Beth-thanks however I asked the ortho dude as the physio recognized there was fluid on the knee. The ortho dude(who i think is a complete dork ) said no to removing the fluid as it'll go away eventually. My physio is one of the more trustworthy ones in Perth & v good @ what he does so i'm going to throw this idea back into his ballpark to see if we can figure it out.

CC, when I had fluid on my knee from an impact and no other injuries (I planted it in the side of a minivan at a combined speed of about 70 mph ) it took about eight weeks to go down. I imagine it would be longer with a sprain. It was borderline to where my chiro thought I might have to have it drained, but it finally went down so I never did see an ortho. I do think electro-stim helped move the fluid out when I started doing that daily at home.

Nala the dog (Aussie shepherd-esque) keeps wishing for a sheep to herd. She's currently trying to herd the new cat, or at least get close enough to get a good sniff. All she really needs to do is to lie there and flick her feathery tail, kitty wouldn't be able to resist.
Headache is better, hot shower and coffee this morning. Also drank a big glass of water.
CC - hope the knee is better. And your evap cooler keeps you cool! 44C (111F) is just too blasted hot.

CC - DH just had 50 cc of fluid drained from his knee two weeks ago. After that happened, we found out that he actually has a form of arthritis. Your swelling should go down - just give it time.
Beth - you need to hire a landscaper, or take the other suggestion - goat/sheep! Stop trying to pull over that lawn mower with your shoulder.
Funny story. Yesterday was supposed to be my first PT appt. 15 mins before leaving, my phone rang and it was the PT telling me not to come - she has conjunctivitis. I thanked her for letting me know, and we rescheduled for later this week :D.

Hey Girls-
Just got a call from an advertising rep that was supposed to come see me today.
His 28 yr old daughter was in an awful car accident this am. She went through the windshield, and apparently they are going to have to remove one of her lungs.
Apparently she is a competitive swimmer, so she is facing not being able to swim again.
Very sad.
Makes my achy hip and grumpy hamstring seem trivial. :(

Tomorrow will be ONE YEAR since I was in the car accident that tore up my SI joint. I've turned into a little bit of a gym rat-- swimming and machines - sometimes the treadmill but I usually pay for that the next day. I had two injections into the joint that helped. I have been back on my mountain bike a few times recently. I always hurt later, but my back hurts most the time anyway, so I would rather ride and hurt than not ride and hurt a little less.:o
On another note my husband who got hit and run December 5 and ended up in the hospital for five days with a broken rib and collapsed lung is 100% better and back to commuting every day.

That's fantastic news about your husband! I'm sorry you haven't been so lucky. I'd be interested to hear more about your SI joint injections as I also have lingering SI joint pain (not intense, but annoying) from my cycling accident in April '05. My pain is mostly just when I'm riding, not so much afterwards, and is at the top of my butt in back, on the right side. Are the injections x-ray guided? I read some about them online awhile back, and they sounded kinda involved and possibly painful (are you anesthesized at all?), so I haven't followed up with them but think I might need to at some point. How long do the results last?
Thanks for the info -- and I hope you'll continue to recover. One year is not that long in the grand scheme of things, though I know it seems it. My orthopod told me that I'd continue to heal for two years after my surgery to repair my pelvis. I'm past that now, but you may still have another year of improvement ahead of you! Fortunately, I'm able to ride, hike, and even run, but just not really long distances, and I worry about pain getting worse on back-to-back days, like if my DH and I were ever to do another bike tour.

Oh, some lady missed a stop sign and t-boned me in the drivers side door at about 35 or 40 mph.
Emily- the injections are xray guided and under anesthesia.($$$) I was having bad stabbing in the spot you are talking about and "Sciatica" type pain. The injections definitely reduced that. I still get a stab her and there. The second shot was in October and I did really well. But I seem to be getting more generalized back pain, probably because I am DOING more. Thanks for the encouragement. It is frustrating, but also I am crazy busy with school and work and kids I couldn't ride so much any way. (I keep saying to myself)

I went for an MRI on my knee today, a rule out for a meniscal tear. Back to the doc on the 4th. I also got a line on a really good PT who is a tri guy at my pool, so I will have that in place when I go back to the doc.
Got in the pool the past two days. Swimming with the buoy. Felt good to be moving.
Got dinner in the oven, and a glass of wine, I smell a bit like the pool, but other than that, not a bad day.

Thanks for the information! I have good health insurance through my employer, so the money aspect is not a biggie, more the time and pain factor (I was glad to hear that you got anesthesia as I am a pain weenie!) I'll make a decision once I see how the pain is after I start riding again in the spring, and once I see how much I am going to ride this year. I sure wish there were a permanent fix rather than just something that lasts a month or three, as I won't necessarily have excellent health insurance forever. Somehow I doubt Medicare will pay for these injections, once I get to that age...

Went to the dojo, class starts with a 15 minute warm up which is mostly yoga. I can hardly move, I'm so stiff, so little range of motion, this can't go on, got to do something. More yoga, more stretching.
Then training itself started, Saturday is weapons (sword, jo, tanto) which gives me a chance to relaxe and breath. I know that's an odd thought that it's relaxing to have someone go at ya' with a sword but .... after so many years it's just how it feels.
I'm starting to warm up, feel a little better.
We start doing variations on technique and I'm working with a beginner. He's gotta sword, I've got one too, he takes a slice at me, I step aside and .... throw then pin him with his sword.
Now I've got his and my weapon and him pinned on the mat or should.
A word about the weapon these are practice swords, heavy, thick, made of solid Japanese oak. Not the narrow lithe slice of metal you may imagine.
Stepping aside - no problem, throw - no problem, pin - no big deal but I have teeny tiny mousey paws so grasping both weapons during the pin is not working as shown by our instructor. So I have to come up with a variation which will work for my mousey paws.
I've got it figured out when newby guy criticizes me for doing something different on the pin. Now I'll take the helpful hint on the mat from anyone but did I mention that he's a beginner and I'm working towards my Sandan (that's 3rd degree black belt. In other words I'm the senior Nidan, 2nd degree in our school)
Bill hears this and corrects him subtly but publicly, as part of the class. I think it goes over newbys head.
So I'm more motivated than ever to recover and train now. In the loving, non violent, peaceful spirit of protecting all things that is the art of Aikido .....;) I'll have to show him why I'm a Nidan and he isn't .... yet ;)
... and why you don't critique your Sempei (senior students) without their ok, nor do you diss women students senior or otherwise.
That .... and my black belt is getting a little tight

No prolotherapy, I got corticosteroids. Insurance doesn't cover prolo, even though it makes more sense, prolo builds tissue while the steroids can break it down.
I am not into NSAIDS. I prefer Omega 3 to help the body with its natural antinflammatory abilities. Flax seed or fish oil at 3x what is recommended- so about 1000mg. Wash it all down with four ounces of pomegranate juice, or a nice red zinfandel.:D

Omega 3's? So I could be having sardines instead of Ibu?

I've got the fish, the hempmilk, the ground flax meal.
Really having a good time cooking with the flax meal. It is cool stuff! Makes yummy pancakes, the pancakes end up extra moist when you add a scoop or two of meal. Thickens sauces, and adds a nice nutty flavor to refried beans.
Ibu is good stuff, but for consumption on a regular basis I'd rather see you eating Omega 3 and 6 instead.

I just read the other day if you put the fish out gels in the freezer, they will cause few unpleasant side effects...ie, burping up fish oil...
I treid pool running today. Just 10 mins. I was afraid to do too much. It did not hurt..so I am hopeful.

Not a power walk, or a "fitness walk", just a walk. I got up early and drove to a nearby park that has really nice trails. I walk about 2 miles or so. It did not hurt, and it felt so good to be outside, I can't even tell you.
I also got to spin 3x on my bike this week for 20 mins a session. I have sore leg muscles. Hard to believe I lost that mucg strength in one month.

The biking will come back fast don't worry. The running is harder to regain, but it truly is not like starting all over again. At first it feels like it but then your base kicks in and things get better.
Glad you got to have a walk. :D:D

I had my second acupunture session yesterday, I fell asleep on the table. :o Acu'ist is having me try so Acai berry juice - it's mixed with a bunch of other fruit juices, glucosamine and omega 3 goodies.
I need more streching, since I no longer have my Pilates class. Perhaps I'll try yoga.

LOL... maybe I should teach my man Lamaze... he winces a bit when I do deep massage on his legs, even though he knows they will feel better for it.

I missed class at the dojo today, but Missy Mae the Mutt and I took an hour long walk and my foot felt good. Although I feel about 90 when I first got up, just being outside felt so good. There was no pain, no limp, good gait etc. Rowing at the gym last week and Aikido helped.
Knott says I need to loose weight. This is not in the "honey you're fat" sense, I need to take stress off the boo boo joints and toe. She's right you know.
I know for my arth I need to increase strength and flexibility.
My usual response to injury is once I'm even slightly better hit the gym and strength train, I dislike stretching :o so I've often said that my joints are held together with muscle. I've got that part down pat. Now I need more flexibility and find a way to loose weight.
