I was getting ready to ride on Sunday and gave my bike a once over. I noticed a bulge in the rear tire and then noticed there were 3 places on the tire that were separating and the threads were showing through. I haven't been real pleased with the Specialized Pro tires. Anyhow, as I was looking at the tire I noticed there was about an inch long crack in the wheel. I found another one that was about a quarter of an inch. So, no ride for me. Took the wheel and tire to the LBS. They tell me I should have a new wheel by Thursday...at least it is still under warranty. Anyone else have any wheel/tire problems with the Ruby Pro?

Good for you for being in the habit of checking your bike before each ride. Tires get old and brittle and have thread separation. Probably depends on ozone and uv exposure and maybe road grime/chemicals. But some rubber compounds have better longevity than other.

Where are the cracks in your rim? Are they where the spoke nipples attach, or on the sidewalls? Sidewalls do wear thin from braking, faster on sandy roads. Cracks near the nipples would indicate excess spoke tension beyond what the rim could bear. Low spoke-count wheels need higher tension and may fail sooner. How old are your wheels? Good your LBS is honoring the warranty.

The tire tread pattern has these half moon indentions. It was along these areas that the tire was failing. The rim was cracked more toward the center than the outside but not right next to a nipple. I recently had a broken spoke replaced...I wonder if they over-tensioned it?? Anyhow, like I said, at least it's under warranty. But I hate getting up early for a group ride, driving to the start and then finding out I can't ride.....urrgh!!!

What kind of wheels? Brand and model of the wheel would be more useful as there may be others who have those same wheels who don't necessarily have a Ruby Pro and they've changed the wheelset that is on it, I think, each model year...

Thanks li
I was wondering the same thing as Eden as one of my training buddies recently bought herself a Ruby Pro.

Glad you found the cracks and wear before they announced themselves on a ride.
