WTF? OK - I can understand and deal with the hot flashes, but nobody told me about the adrenaline surge thing. I hate it. It's like the fight or flight reflex is kicking in, involuntarily! Has anyone else dealt with this?
Menopause, it's not for sissies.
Hi, Snap! I've been dealing with it for years.....though I didn't know what it was, and had never heard it was connected with menopause! yet something else for me to look forward to!! Cool!
I started taking a supplement, recommended by my naturopathic technician called adrenal life force. It's got B vitamins, some adrenal gland and some other stuff I've never heard of. Since I started taking it, I haven't felt better in years!! It's not an OTC, though. I wonder if she can mail it to you? hmmmmmm
Hugs and cool, relaxing butterflies,

Yup, I got 'em, too. Started the same time as my hot flashes. I call 'em panic attacks.
They are a booger to deal with sometimes!

Really?? I had absolutely no idea these adrenaline surges were part of the curse. Neither does my doctor. I really wonder about him sometimes.
After several years of these, it's good to know I'm not alone (and that they seem to be subsiding some, too).

Thanks, but I have to be very carefully about what I take; don't want to mess up the things I take currently.

Yes! It took me months to figure out what it was, I just knew it was a feeling I did not want!

I had no idea either, until I started researching. I stumbled across something (should have saved the link) talking about hot flashes and adrenaline surges. Bingo!
I swear most of my symptoms went away, but when my doctor put me on a two week regimen of Prednisone they came back with a vengeance.

OK
I opened this thread thinking it would be something to do with the adrenalin rush on the start line of a race, or charging downhill or something BIKE related...
LOL... Its about this. I had NO idea that adrenalin did this during menopause. At 42, I guess I am getting close-ish to this...
Thanks for the heads-up gals... yet another reason why TE is invaluable

Me neither, and I don't want to hear it!

So what happens? What are you feeling?
The reason I ask is are you sure this is not anxiety attacks?
I have been having those since I was in my late 20's. I have them under much better control now (no meds). Just working out and doing yoga helped. Actually the yoga helps a lot. I have just never ever herd of that being a symptom of meno. Have you had your hormone levels checked?
Keep us posted on how it is going, and relax is the best advice I can give you. And you don't need too do med's for this just remember to breath!

Brandi - it's just a very strange feeling, hard to describe. Not really like a full blown anxiety attack, I've had those too - these feel different. Oh yes, I've had my hormone levels checked, you must've missed my announcment last year. :p I've been in full meno for over a year now. :D

Yup, I have them too. I hate them. Never had them earlier in life. I thought maybe they were a neurochemical hangover from last year's state of being on constant high alert, but now that I read your posts, I think they probably started a couple of years ago and were magnified by last year's high sustained stress. It's my hope that having a trainer here will let me blow off the chemicals when they hit. Really--that was part of why I got a trainer.
Once and only once I was just sitting here and my heart started racing. It didn't last long but long enough to scare the bejeezus outta me.
Is this what you mean?
I had one hot flash about two years ago (intense!) and I think the night sweats are over.
A Cliff Notes menopause :)

I think I'm in perimenopause..or maybe start of menopause.
But so far, I only experience a warm flush in face for 3-5 min. maybe 1-2 times per month. And I hope I don't get hot, sweaty flashes.
It's pretty calm and peetering out stuff...this start of menopause for me.
I experience sudden short heartbeat even when lying in bed over a year ago....because I stress out unnecessarily over stuff related to my job. Just extreme worry to me. It went on for several weeks.. then went away after departmental audit was over. :)
And yes, exercise seems to help overall.
It seems like these things are similar, but not entirely the same. Mine are not connected with anything I would normally associated with anxiety - I'm usually not "worrying" about something, in face, it may even be the opposite. The last one happened when I had been obssessing about the exciting new home improvement project we're planning, and then walked home at speed, telling my co-worker about it. No worry, just excitement....does the body interpret these the same way? I don't think mine does as these don't happen to me (that I can recall) when I am actually worried about something.
The new supplements really do help, though, so I'm a happy camper. :D
Snap, I hope you find a nice way to deal with these and that they don't happen often for you! Sending happy gentle butterflies to help with that.
Hugs and butterflies,
~T~

if it will make you guys feel any better, i had some of this long before the hemi- peri- and meno- pause.
and then again, there's my mother; she never had a single hot flash. not one.
No symptoms of menopause. No, she doesn't eat special, yes, she drinks coffee and alcohol and eats chocolate. So we're all different!!

Most of my adolescent/adult life I've had palpitations (SVT, somewhat tied to food allergies) and anxiety attacks (mild ones, as those things go). I haven't even started menopause in earnest yet. I just can't freakin' wait.

I feel a rage coming on and my husband heads for the hills. I hate it. I wish I didn't have those feelings and I know it's because of the (lack of) hormones. I'm on an estrogen patch and I'm fine--most of the time. But other times....

That sounds more like some type of arrhythmia (SVT being the most common). I've had short (a few seconds) episodes like you describe as well--it's a weird sensation.

Yes, everyone is different. I hope pre-menopausal women reading this thread don't wind up scared, thinking everyone has rages and panic attacks and terrible symptoms all through menopause. Some women indeed do have problems, some don't have any, some have annoying but not debilitating symptoms.
I will be turning 54 soon and am not in menopause yet and have not had any symptoms either. Some of my friends are having hot flashes and sweats, but then again other friends have gone through the menopause transition and have not had any problems. And one woman in town seems to blame everything on menopause- from feeling resentful or angry, to having a stomach ache, the flu, low energy, or just a bad hair day. She's been blaming menopause for all that ails her for years now. (I am not implying that anyone here does that, just relating what I've observed over the years)
To be accurate, I think the term "menopausal" or "in menopause" means you have already finished the transition and thus should not be experiencing any symptoms of the transition anymore. "Peri-menopausal" means you are somewhere in the middle of the transition. "Pre-menopausal" means you are about to go through the transition. At least that's what my doctor explained to me. Can someone else explain the terms more clearly than I?

You can have symtoms when you are in menopause. I'm in full menopause, according to my doctor and the blood tests she ran. I have very mild hot flashes, more like warm glows. The adrenal surges are irritating, but in truth I can live with them. The greatest joy is not having a period for well over a year. :D

If it's any comfort to you, that part faded away for me after a year or two. And the hot flashes got much milder.

Oh, you are right about that, I didn't realize that fact! I learned some good stuff reading this overview page:

Now, someone needs to find out if my being put on Prednisone caused my symptoms to come back. It sure seems like it!

Out of curiosity, Snap, you on any sort of HRT? (I may have missed that and if so, sorry.) Just wondering. I have to go hormone free when I hit that "time".

Nope - I'm going "cold turkey". :D
I wonder if the fact that I was never one who had a horrid time with my period - no major cramps, no PMS - explains why I'm having a relatively easy menopause?

Too bad....she feels that way..she needs to bike..frequently.
