I loved this company! I can not believe a huge company bought them. I am not supporting this buy out! I like to support small companies with family values. Maybe I was wrong. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977214433
I just don't know if I can trust the fact that this huge company now own's them/ Oh Tom's of Main Has been bought buy them too!

$925 million is a very persuasive number
I doubt the decision came easily.

Say it ain't so Burt :o

I like their gardeners hand creme and will still buy their products. There are small companies and individual craftspeople here that make their own soaps, lotions, hand cremes etc. I'll look more for them till they are bought by Clorox too ;)

Though it's sad they are owned by a corporation now it shows "our" funky market share; health foods, natural products has been "discovered".

There's always Dr. Bronners.

I guess I don't feel bad about this because Clorox is a local company and one of my teammates and another one of my teammate's husband works for them.

Burts Bees has been a pretty huge company in it's own right for quite a while. Roxanne Quimby sold 80% of the business to AEA Investors. Personally, I find the scents they use are too strong.

This is one of my pet peeves--perfume in everything, from our facial creams to our toilet paper and everything in between. It's a form of pollution. If I want to smell like a perfume, I'll buy a perfume. Which I don't, indicidentally--it would interfere with my wine tasting. One of my top criteria for using a product is whether it is unscented.

I'm clearly not a Burt's Bees user, but that is sad news about Tom's of Maine.

Better Botanicals is still clean... I think (hope). Dang, I was just going to buy some more Burt's Bees citrus facial scrub, too.

There was an article in Sunday's NYTimes business section on this. Apparently the company has been on the block for a couple of years. From the article, the implication was that they run as a separate entity and continue to push green production practices.

My DH made me stop buying Burt's Bees products some time ago. They are anti-recreational use land owners. What this means is that even though they have very large land holdings in Maine, they will not open any part of those lands to recreation (including MTB). In fact, they even closed trails that already existed.

So, this news doesn't really affect me as much.

There are a lot of good points here. From being happy about it (employment reasons) to not happy about it.
I myself really like to support the samll businesses. I also understand that sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. And I hope that what Thorn says is true that they will keep the same values.
Now as far as what Shefly said about the land use...is it possible that they might be trying to preserve the land from overuse? I know where I live there are a lot of area's that get closed from overuse. Sometimes for a very long time to get the natrual flora to come back. I am just asking. I know area's here on the central coast that have been closed for all the 14 years I have lived here cause they have just been used to the point of almost no return.

I just read this article and found it very interesting. What an odd couple they were. So now I am confused. I want to support large companies trying to change but.....I am just not sure? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/06/business/06bees.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ei=5087&em&en=376c16fcb1df9166&ex=1199854800
It seems the larger the company the more things fall through the cracks. The control part seems to go down hill. This is from personal experience with things I have bought in the past. I don't know it confusses me.

I used to live next to Roxanne when she first moved to NC. She drove a 1985 Honda Civic wagon, even though I know she could have upgraded. She eventually did (my friend bought the Civic). I visited the second (I think) plant they had in Raleigh. Seemed pretty darn big to me. I never did like the products--too greasy and heavy and fragrancey for my skin, but I like their labels.

Can't blame the business-owner for being successful. The best way to make sure of the products we buy is to either make them yourself or buy them directly from the makers (small scale, like at farmers markets). That's not always an option, either because of time, know-how, availability, or quality. I do what I can to live lightly, but I don't agonize over it. I used to, and it made me quite worried all the time. I lightened up, and I'm happier.

If you want to replace your Burts Bee's products with a small company for lotions, bath products and lip balm, try Canus. Although the lip balm is made of beeswax, the lotions and body products are made from goats milk which creates a wonderful product.

I'm a big fan of Badger Balm (www.badgerbalm.com). Awesome products from a company that seems to be very conservation/sustainability minded.

They don't have cleansers, etc. as Burt's Bees does, but they have lip balm and moisturizers covered.

In light of this news I am searching for a new skin care line...I have slight issues with acne and Burt's was the first line that kept it somewhat under control and an affordable price. An absolute must is simplicity!!! I want to wash and moisturize...that is it! I don't want to have to dab this on here and that on there...wait 5 minutes rinse and apply this...bla bla bla! (I do however take the time for a bi-monthly mask treatment)

Let's hear what y'all use...

any reviews about Zia???

Bouncy, my skin is very oily (combination) and very sensitive. I don't have much acne per se, but almost all skin care products (and most greasy hair care products) make me break out. Better Botanicals cleanser and moisturizer do really well for me. I've thrown away the boxes and they don't put a complete ingredient list on the actual tubes, but they're pretty clean (cleaner than you might think from reading the list on the website of every ingredient they use in any products).

I use the face cream and love it! I am super sensitive to stuff too! My healthfood store doesn't stock it though. I got mine when I was in South Carolina. Don't know what I will do when I run out. Maybe oreder online.

Yes i love zia's face wash! I have been using them for years! And i break out from time to time. I need something to really clean my face when i am working so the citruse face wash is wonderful as well the green one (not sure what that one is called) and just the cream face wash. I have had not one problem with any of them. They sell little bottles of the washes too so you cam try them out without having to pay for a large amount and then find out you don't like it.
Highly recommend thier stuff!!!!!:D

Well, it's pricey, but I use so little of it that I think it evens out in the end. I use Dr. Haushka stuff from Germany. I use their toner and moisturizer (only during the day). I use Jason soap (liquid). It's the only thing that has evened out my skin and cleared up my breakouts and soothed my wrinkles (not supposed to have all those at once, but somehow I got lucky).

I'll second Dr. Hauschka's being very gentle. I don't use it because it's a little heavy for my oily skin, but it doesn't break me out.

I use Dr. Bronner's soap, and pure grape seed oil for a moisturizer. Tried all kinds of stuff, but this seems to be the best combination for my goofy skin.

Funny you mention Dr. Hauschka's stuff...I bought a sample moisturizer for dry, windburned face after a couple of winter rides. I really like the feel but even with the smallest amount I used I was still a greasy mess! BUT...that is not to say I wouldn't use it at night. Still have plenty in the tube...
Pricey yes...but goes a looong way...yes!!!

Grapeseed oil...hmmmm...interesting!!!!

I may try some Dr Bronners next.

Thanks for the input gals...keep 'em coming!

My grocery store has a really big "natural" section, and I can get a nice 4oz bottle for about $4. (It lasts a long time.) Very light, absorbs quickly, unscented. Light enough to use around the eyes. Works nicely as a massage oil, too.

The brand I use is Aura Cacia. www.auracacia.com

Dr. H recommends NOT using moisturizer at night, only toner (and the way too pricey skin conditioner if you can afford it, which I cannot at the moment (well, it's because of the new bike I've got my eye on--gotta stick with priorities, right!)).

Dr. H has several moisturizers. I like the quince day cream the best for me--it's not greasy at all--and the clarifying toner. It's all I use and I actually spend less then when I was buying other products that were more complicated. There's a discount cosmetics company online that sells Dr H stuff *relatively* inexpensively. It's called essentialdayspa.com (I think).

Grape seed oil has been good for me, too. I used to get it in a health food store--Whole Foods and the like.

I use Dr. Hauschka's too. It is expensive, so thanks for that link, I will check it out.
Tulip is right- they make various moisturizers with different formulas for different skin types. If one is too oily then another will be just right. Also don't use too much- a little goes a very long way.
For my 53 year old face skin with no oiliness/blemish problems, I use the "Moisturizing Day Cream". Very silky and light. I think it adds more moisture for "mature skin" than the quince day cream.
My other fave Dr.H product is the (also expensive) Birch Arnica body oil. Once every 2 or 3 weeks I loofah my whole body in the shower and then massage in the oil all over- it is so light it never feels "oily", just silky and warming. A few drops here and there can get worked in nicely. Smells like wood and the wonderful silky effect lasts for many days afterwards. It amazes me that I don't "feel" it there 5 days later, but water will still bead up on my skin a bit and I don't feel dry skin issues. Needless to say, I don't suds my whole body up with soap every day in the shower- I don't like removing all my good natural skin oils excessively. I just do the hot water shower all over and soap up the strategic spots. :D

Like you I use a very natural olve oil and goats milk soap when I shower or just water except for the private area's. they always get washed.:o

Try some vitamin e, too (take it internally). If everything is dry and your scalp is suffering, it could be a nutritional issue in addition to the usual dry skin in the winter. Eat avocados and olive oil! Yum.

And are you being sure to drink plenty of water? It's easy for me to get dehydrated when it's cold out, because I just don't feel like drinking a lot of water.
