Well, you all asked for it, so here it is...............
I am challenging anyone on this site to a
7 Week,body fat % weight loss Challenge.
Let's see how we do!
Let's sweeten the pot with a little reward for those who want to participate- a water bottle shower!! Everyone who participates in the reward portion of the challenge agrees to send the winner a water bottle at their cost. If you win, you get the loot!!
Rules:
1.You must be honest about your weight and % of weight loss. Weigh at the same time of day in the same "outfit" or sans outfit!
2. You must have a scale that weighs to the nearest ounce to keep it fair.
3. You must not miss a weigh in.
4. Weigh in's will be on Friday this time, since today is Thursday and some of our TE'ers won't read this until after work tonight - no one wants to weigh in at the end of the day!!
5. You can't guzzle 2 gallons of water like the guy on Biggest Loser to throw the scale and win the water bottles. Sorry.
6. You must be willing to purchase a water bottle and pay for the shipping to the winner out of your own funds within one week of the final weigh in.
7. The contest ends - Friday February 22
8. Biggest loser by % of body fat lost wins!
9. You must cut and paste your name to the list and declare yourself a reward or no reward participant.
We will do both a reward and non reward challenge.
I will start a cut and paste list - add your name to the list and add whether you want to participate in the reward or no reward challenge!!
Love ya all - Friday is just around the corner - woo hoooooooo!!!!!

I want to be in, but I can't guarantee I can weigh in on Fridays. (I use the FedEx scale at work, and if there are a bunch of people in the room, I'm NOT hopping on it!)
So, I guess I'm in the non-reward side.

I want to participate and I'll agree to send a water bottle to the winner! Can I suggest that we do it like The Biggest Loser and do % of body weight lost instead of just lbs lost? It'll even out the stakes a little...you know?
(I took the liberty of adding Pedal Wench to the challenge as a 'no reward' participant...hope that is ok!)

That is a great idea -
Who would win? Pounds or % ? Theoretically, can't someone loose a lot of weight but a lesser % ?

I LOVE that idea! I really can't lose too much more weight, but as a percentage, I probably can compete. After watching the premier of this season's Biggest Loser, I realized that just pounds is hard to compete against. I really can only lose about another 5 lbs before I start losing muscle, but those folks are knocking off 20 lbs. in a week!
kelownagirl

Like the % idea but I'll go with either way - I just like participating as a motivation. (The reason the % is more fair is that it's easier to lose weight faster at the beginning. I used to lose 2lbs a week, now I can barely lose 1/2 lb a week). Anyway, make me non-reward - I can't win anyway. We all get to post on the same thread anyway right?
Do we also need to post our start and goal weight?
Start - 122 lbs this morning. (I won't be here tomorrow)
Goal - 117 by Feb 28
5lbs loss is only 4% of my current body weight.

Okay, scratch the idea of weigh loss wins by pounds, I will edit the original post and we will do % loss.
Can someone here take care of the formula for calculating weight loss by % so that those who want to take place in the challenge but don't know how to do this can learn and I will edit my original post??
Thanks!!

I'd like to join the no reward challenge.

% of starting weight would have to determine the winner.
For example:
If someone starts at 200 lbs and loses 12 lbs, that's 6% of their starting body weight. If someone starts at 120 lbs and loses 10 lbs, that's 8.3% of their body weight and much harder to do. The second person would win even though technically, they've lost less lbs than the other person.
The biggest loser does it this way so that a woman who weighs 200 lbs can still compete on the same playing field as a guy who weighs 400 lbs. The actual lbs lost is less, but as a % of starting weight, it can be the same (or better).
To calculate: % = lbs loss/starting weight x 100.

Weight this morning on home scale: 145
Goal: less than 140
October 1st I weighed 150. I did a challenge like this with a woman at work in hopes of losing 140 before the Thanksgiving Eatfest with my family. I got down to 143 but bounced back up to 148 by the time I got home. feh Now I'm aiming for that mystical 140 again.

Me too! That's my goal for 2008...to NOT have a similar 2009 resolution! :)
It's possible!
I made a resolution in 2004, and "managing weight" is no longer an issue in my life.
What worked for me? I made the decision to lose weight by making changes that I was willing to commit to for the rest of my life. For me, that meant that I lost weight slowly. More slowly than my friends that started diets in 2004 at the same time. But I'm still a size 4, and my dieting friends have gone round and round losing the same 20/30 pounds & gaining it back. It happened so slowly, and I was so committed and unresentful of the changes that I made, that my friends actually talk like I'm now just a naturally skinny person.
Anyway, just wanted to encourage everyone to believe that it is possible to get a handle on your weight in a way that you can live with long term, and leave this area behind as "a problem" for good.
GLC1968
01-04-2008, 01:28 PM
I made the decision to lose weight by making changes that I was willing to commit to for the rest of my life.
You know, I did exactly this when I was 28. I lost about 25lbs and for the first time in my life, I felt 'normal' and not fat. I did it by deciding to eat right for the sake of eating right, and not just to lose weight. And the weight eventually came off. I distinctly remember my friends and coworkers asking when I was going to stop losing, and I used to say "when my body is ready - I'm happy eating the way I do so we'll just see where this takes me".
Unfortunately, my life underwent a major upheaval and there have been about 5 additional upheavals since then. There have also been about 500 attempts at 'dieting' since then, too. :( And here I am, 35 lbs heavier than were my body 'normalized' 10 years ago.
Until a few days ago, I just couldn't seem to get back into that old mindset. I don't know what triggered it, but last week I made a decision to eat right again for long term benefits (to me, to the environment, to my biking, to my husband, etc) and it feels right again. FINALLY. No more shooting for a particular event or time frame...no more 'temporary' thoughts...I'm getting into 'lifestyle mode'!
Blueskies - I hope to follow in your footsteps!

My best suggestion was given to me by my dear friend....... When I wake up in the morning and have yet to get out of bed and I am already mad at anyone or everyone in my family, I need to realize that the problem is ME, not THEM!!
That has done more for me than I would have ever imagined. I can take responsibility for my mood, give others extra grace, and take care of myself on those days.
I try to rest more - take a nap on those days. I try to not put extra responsibilities on myself on those days. Those are the days when I let the laundry pile up or the dishes go for a day. I pamper myself a bit more on those days. One way that I used to pamper myself is by food - which I try not to do so much now, but on occasion, it just works. I just weight the cost of the guilt that I will have afterwards. Sometimes it's just worth it.
Good morning! A cold and cough have kept me from exercising this week, but I did lose one pound, so am now 179. I'm motivated! :D

Hi,
I have been browsing these post for a while. It has been quite some time since I joined any chat line.
I have been biking for 4+ years. I lost weight 4 years ago on WW and biking. I am only 4'10" and weighed 140. Now I teeter below 120. But still have pounds to lose. I have biked centuires, bike vacations, charity weekends, etc. I am "in shape" but still have that "stuff". I also run...and doing a very poor job of training for a 1/2 marathon.
I am doing my own Biggest Loser at home and by 3/22 I need to lose 15 pounds. I have lost 2 - 3 depending on the day. I "think" I would like to join this and do the reward thing.
I jsut think the constantly trying to lose weight (especially the last 10- 15 pounds) is so hard. And now matter how active I am, I have to constantly watch my wieght. That being said...I am always falling off the wagon, needing a night "out", love my wine and work really get's inteh way of my training schedule!
So here it is...a public confession and committment to get teh weight off!
1/11 weight is 162. I'm down 1 pound. Hope to do better next week. I haven't been able to make it to the gym for spinning class this week due to working late.

One and a half weeks of working out and counting calories and I'm up a pound. (and don't say muscle weighs more than fat because I KNOW I didn't gain a pound of muscle in a week :p).
last week: 156

it better start coming off or body parts are going to get chopped off... butt and boobs you're first on the list...

Are we supposed to weigh in on Fridays? If so, I was 121.3 Friday morning. I am having a hard time getting off the xmas eat-all-you-want bandwagon. If only the chocolates and cookies were all gone. Also, I'm training and trying to eat more carbs and protein so it's hard to keep my calories down. Upside is, I'm burning lots by working out every day I guess.

katluvr,
welcome, join in, it helps to have people who understand and are supportive! falling off the wagon is to be expected, dont beat yourself up over it. but dont take it as a license to quit either, just get back in it! everyone has Their Thing that we succumb too, whether chocolate, bread, wine, so take it as a special treat for the moment and then get on with living.
yesterday morning i carefully counted out my 59 grams of ezekial cereal with my 4 ounces of skim milk, then a coworker whose family owns a mexican restaurant brings in 4 dozen mini-chimichangas!! and there are only four people on our shift, so it would have been rude not to imbibe. i limited myself to 4 - two beef, two chicken - with guacamole.
then faithfully got up this morning and once again measured out my 59 grams of ezekial cereal and 4 ounces of skim milk . . . . .

Ok, I usually weigh in on Tuesdays...but I really almost weigh every day.
So start me off at 119--last weeks weight. I have been doing the 1 pound per week the past 3 weeks. I did a long ride and long run this weekend, but may have had just 1 too many glasses of wine last night (darn if they just made wine without calories). I actually do a good job or riding or running on weekends...but it is staying active during the week. Well I packed my bag for the gym and it is in the car and the gym is on the way home!

147 today. So down 1 pound. Woooohooooo!!! I really thought I wasn't going to lose this week. My period is starting today so next week should be better without cravings or that bloat-inducing water weight (ahhhh, I love knowing exactly when it's coming. One really good think about the BCP) Does anyone else actually have a decrease in appetite during their period?
So, I'm gonna make a couple of small goals for this next week.
1. To take my vitamins everyday. I've been really bad about this.
2. To try alternating 3 days of strength training and 3 days on the bike. I think this will be harder. I'm feeling really really tired and kinda lazy lately.

I wasn't going to weigh myself today, wasn't going to post, because I was fairly sure I'd gained and didn't want to stress about it, but I decided to do it anyway. So here goes,
last week, 124.5
this week, 126.5 (some of this is water, since I weighed at 1pm and am definitely feeling bloaty, but some of it's definitely real too. First week of classes, I've been all out of sorts, haven't been exercising and have been eating badly).

Hang in there Liza--I think the female body is so weird at weight fluctuation. And you are right, I can tell when I am "up" weight w/ fluid or their gains. What I dont' belive is blaming it on muscle--I never gain that much muscle in one week. But I think the ups and down happen....like the stock market, gotta be in there for the long run. So here's to a good lose the next week!

Congrats to all of you that have changed your habits in a positive way, whether the scale showed a loss or not this week! I hope you guys don't mind if I make a comment. I lost 35 lbs last year, and one thing I learned is how much weight can fluctuate, especially due to changes in water balance. I used to do a weekly weigh in like you guys do, and then would overeact to the results, if the scale showed a loss I felt virtuous and overate, or if the scale showed a gain and I had been really good, I felt let down and overate. This time around I patiently recorded my morning weights, trying to be as consistent as possible (same scale, nude, after using the bathroom) but then at the end of the week I also averaged the numbers and plotted the average. I also put a star next to each entry which was a low I hadn't seen for a while. I noticed by averaging even a slow but sure weight loss could surface above the noise, and even on weeks that I didn't see a loss if I reached a new low weight I knew I was doing something right.
Its amazing how much water can fluctuate, especially in women. Its not just our cycles. Sometimes I'll notice I am up a bit after a lot of exercise, that too can be from inflammation and fluid retention. Does that mean that what I am doing isn't working? Absolutely not, only if the weekly averages never show a loss and I never reach new low weight. Same thing with a gain. I only score a gain as reaching a high I have never reached before.
I still do the same thing now that I am in maintenance. For me maintenance also is actually a 4 lb range. Depending on where I am in my cycle, or if I ate salty food I can be at either end, but I have stayed somewhere within this 4 lb range for several months now. I don't freak out when I am at the high end and say I gained 4 lb, or rejoice when I am at the low end and say I lost 4 pounds. My plan is to simply cut back if I ever go above my range, but that hasn't happened to me yet. I did this throughout the holidays and it kept me sane.
The only other comment I will make is that if you have always struggled with your weight (like me) maybe its time to find out if there isn't an underlying metabolic reason. I mean if you follow a healthy calorically resticted diet, exercise and can't seem to lose weight. In my case it was both low insulin and low thyroid. So, for me both adjusting my throid meds (going on T4/T3 combo therapy) and eating a high protein low carb diet (that didn't raise my blood sugar) did the trick, not only for weight loss, but for getting my apetite in sync with my bodies needs and feeling good overall.
Good luck to you all!

I was 146, down 1 pound from last week, but up one pound from the start.
I'm going to drop out of the challenge. It's a very stressful time for me between work and a sister who is very ill. I realized that this was just adding another layer of stress. I'm going to try being as easy on myself as possible for a while and try to lose the weight later. I like the thought of a challenge and the support for the weight loss. If things are going better, I'll join up for the next one.

161.1 for me this week. Up to just below where I started, but knowing where I am in my cycle, I'm totally ok with this number.
Trisk - I think you make some very good points. I agree that female weight can fluctuate pretty drastically and I hope that no one here feels pressure to post a certain number each week. If anything, seeing everyone else's numbers is really helping me to see that I'm not the only one who sees a lot of up and down. At the same time, knowing that I'm reporting back to everyone once a week keeps the 'good fight' at the front of my conscious mind.
roadiegal - I hope everything is ok with your sister. I'll take you off the chart but know that you are always welcome back! I think that if this 7 weeks is moderately successful for many of us, we may have to do another round in the future! :D
I'll post the chart later today. We're off to watch a cylcocross race! :)
161.0 this week. I'm down another pound. I made it to a couple of spinning classes last week. My goals this week are to increase the exercise, get all my water in and cut down on the diet cokes. It seems that the more diet coke I drink, the more tempted I am to visit the vending machines at work.
Triskeliongirl
01-19-2008, 10:01 AM
Hey Roadie Gal, I hope your sister's condition improves. I agree that it can be hard to focus on weight loss when you are under stress. As I was losing my weight, I did take a 'break' and just worked on maintaining when I had some stressful work deadlines to deal with. So perhaps you could make mainteance your goal for now, and come back to weight loss when you feel you can handle it.
I hope you guys don't mind my participating in this thread even though I am on maintenance now. I'll attach my weight loss record so you'll see what I mean. It has both my daily and weekly numbers plotted. You'll also notice that I am still heavier than many of you that are trying to lose weight. But at 22% bodyfat I really am happy with how I look (I posted before and after pics here if any of you are curious: http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showpost.php?p=273475&postcount=30). I am basically now eating in a way that is in sync with my body, with the idea that my body will settle at its natural weight. So, if I do lose more when spring time comes and I am riding more, I am OK with that, but if I don't I am OK with that too. The gain in the first half of last year were despite caloric restriction and lots of cycling. I now eat more than when I was gaining weight because I eat foods that my body can metabolize correctly.

Oh my -- I completely forgot about the challenge, and didn't realize what the title of the thread was --- I thought it was one of the on-going off-topic threads. I'm so sorry I've been a blank spot on the spreadsheet.

I guess beside just weighing in weekly I was looking for what is or is not working for other gals/ladies here. Should I look elsewhere in the forum? Any "ah ha" moments that when you tried this it finally worked? 155 for me and I echo the remarks made already - this is slow. I know for me personally, it is because I have eaten out too much. Even though I pick the very best thing on the menu, there is still the mystery of how it is prepared. I have to get past this plateau of 155. I have been stuck here forever. On the BMI scale, I am in the healthy range and I look pretty good, I am just not completely happy with where I am at. I have been down to 146 which was too skinny, and so I'd just like to make it to 149-150. It is so frustrating to be so close and not be able to get there.
I checked out Jillian's plan (The Biggest Loser) and according to my "body size" which is pear, I need to eat less protein. Apparently is metabolizes slower. I currently eat lots of protein. I am going to swap things around this week and see what happens. Break out the veggies.
No more eating out, either!

121.8 Whooptie-do.
I have been working out about an hour a day on average, burning at least 2000 calories a week and eating about 1500-1600 calories a day. I STILL have to lower my caloric intake I guess.:mad::mad::mad: I usually only lose weight if it's down around 1200 but I figured with all the extra exercise I needed to fuel a bit more. I'm eating 55-60% carb, 25-25% fat, 20-25% protein.

My grandmother lived to be 94 and until she passed-away, she diligently watched her weight. Although, I will say (wow, I just spelled 'say' as 'seigh'--that's weird) it always came across as a health concern as opposed to vanity. She was a believer in whole foods.

Now I am 161.

starfish, i hear ya, i notice a big difference in climbing with this extra weight, climbing better is one of my reasons for being dedicated to this weight loss attempt
I wondered if losing weight would make a big difference in my climbing and mountain biking. I'm close to 180. I'd love to get down to 150 or 145. My lowest weight ever was 155, but I wasn't a cyclist then. I'm a really strong cyclist on the flats, but once I hit the hills, it's like I'm a dead weight. It's so frustrating. Probably the best thing to do is drop these lbs.

Exactly the same with me, and I look forward to the day when I've dropped at least 20 pounds because climbing would be a whole lot easier I would imagine. I've had to walk up a number of hills (and even more before I knew I had a granny gear). :o This week I've undergone an endoscopy and colonoscopy, so I may be down a few pounds just because of that. Woohoo — I'll take it however I get it. :D

I know it's late in the game ... but I've been lurking and love this thread.
Does that count? Can I still join in as a no-reward participant (don't want to take anything away from you guys who don't have as much to lose...)
I weighed my heaviest ever at the start of this challenge: 209.
See, me being here can help the rest of you feel good about yourselves; at least you haven't "let yourself go" this far!
I don't feel healthy enough to bike 20 miles, much less 100. Hard to tell; too much snow to try. I have been walking, a wee bit of trainer time, stairclimber, a cross-country ski every week.
I have a Neanderthal-boned build, so although I'm 5'4", I'm only a size 16 (can't lie about the 14s right now, they won't fit), and my "average" adult weight for the past five years or so has been a much healthier 185. In high school weighed a muscular 138 AND right after high school as a gym rat was 145 with 17 percent bodyfat. So losing 50 pounds for health reasons (screw how the clothes look; I know I'm built like a brick sh!thouse) is not out of the question for me, but I'd be happy just feeling healthy and being strong on the bike.
The past eight months have been full of upheaval: DH and the two mutts and I moved THREE times, now commuting an hour each way (add 15-20 minutes each way for snow-covered roads) and feel like it's eaten up my exercise time. Terrible lung infection in April after a two-day cycling tour in Yellowstone, took THREE rounds of antibiotics; I recovered to ride the Kokopelli trail in May and weighed about 187. Did the 100 at Little Red Riding Hood in early June (at 190?) and then didn't make much time for exercise all summer and fall; once-a-week hikes don't cut it. ((DH has also crept up to near an all-time high))
My cholesterol has been an issue for the past five years, and I have had a hard time getting my hypothyroid situation "optimal," but other than that I'm healthy. My naturopath doc finally tested me for food allergies and candida, and suspects leaky gut (hello, don't do 3 courses of antibiotics AND birth control pills AND Advair AND a diet of sugar). So for the past eight days I've been on a candida control cleanse-type eating plan: No wheat, no dairy, no sugar, no booze, nothing fermented, no fruit. Just veggies and a little meat, one serving of grain per day max.
All that being said, I am an eternal optimist. I have lost 7 pounds in eight days, now at 202. If I can make this a lifestyle decision (and not go back to the wine, burgers, cheese and dessert diet that got me here) then I can finally get to a healthy, happy place.
I want to organize an X-C ski trip in Yellowstone in March. I want to cycle there in April before the road opens to cars. I want to commute, at least one day per week, the 50 miles to work and have enough energy to ride home. I want to enter a race and not have people look at me and laugh.
Can I play?

Welcome CyclaSutra!
I am in the same boat as you! I have a solid build as well. When I get weighed at the docs office, they always gasp at how much more I weight than they thought I would. Not ever sure how to react to that.
Anyways, I have problems with hypothyroid and am very concerned about my potential for getting diabetes. I've been doing a similar diet as yours but I have one or two servings of fruit a day. When I stick to this plan, I feel great and gradually lose weight.
Stick with it and you'll do great!
And, you should never be embarrassed to enter a race! All sorts of shapes and sizes and ages enter races. Enter a race and go for it! You'll have fun.

Hi all...OK...at 160 this morning. Ten pounds down, and focusing on the next 10.
This morning, re-started doing a full-body conditioning/strength/core class for an hour before the hour-long spin class. If this combo 2x week doesn't kick my metabolism into gear, I don't know what will.
Now...to curb the eating...

Thanks, all. Limewave, thanks for being my closest body example; I'd be thrilled if I were 180 again. Are you training for that Ironman?
I don't have kids to keep me busy, but trying to stay employed, married, write on a novel (my evil escape plan from the newspaper grind), commute, keep clean undies and get enough sleep is enough of a load for me. Now add a couple of hours of veggie/food prep per day. I confess, a big part of my weight gain was probably being too lazy to cook. Not anymore!
P.S.-- I am down to just one pair of jeans that fits, and I refuse to buy any more size 16s. Maybe by the end of the challenge I can get a pair of 14s!

OK...this is day 3 of renewed healthy eating. Also day 3 of a new bout of writing down EVERYTHING I eat, and emailing nightly food logs to my coach.
For me, this writing it all down, with calories, and then knowing I have to email it off to someone...it sure helps me.
Too embarrassing to email anyone all the incredible junk and quantities I eat when I'm not watching it.

Wow.. you guys have been doing what I've been thinking about doing for a month! I'm sorry I missed out so far, but if you don't mind I will play along with posting my weigh-ins. I started "getting back at it" after the first week of January. My hubby, who is NOT AT ALL athletic minded, decided to start on the trainer every morning and lose 20 lb. When I noticed he was sticking to it and losing weight, I was shocked, and feared he would do better than me! So... I've worked on the weight issues. My heaviest was a few years ago at 190 (I'm 5'7" and big boned), even though I was still working out at that time. I have always worked out, and people are surprised that I am as athletic as I am, because I do carry a lot of weight (the family curse).
When I started 3 weeks ago, I weighed 181 lb. Now am at 176.5. Progress! I've also started training more specifically for a June 28th olympic tri, and am therefore more committed to harder workouts than I was doing before. I find that a goal helps me to push it harder than I otherwise would!
So, I'll check in and keep better track. You gals are going to be great for me.. kind of like a personal weight watchers program! Thanks for starting this!

jesvetmed - welcome!! Also welcome to Cyclasutra!
To everyone who isn't losing or who has only lost a little bit- THAT IS STILL FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!! It really doesn't mean that you suck at this at all - most people are PUTTING WEIGHT ON at this time of year - to not gain or only lose a little is to win! :D:D:D Keep it up, or um, I mean down or the same?!?
Well...........
I got on the scale first thing this morning - reading = 154.2. I waited for the computer to boot up and updates to do their thing - and hopped on the scale again =154.8, maybe 5 minutes between weigh ins.
very confusing
so I am going to go with 154.6
We got a snow day today - no school for the kids. I promised that we could make sugar cookies - I WILL NOT have any. I can do that - I have done lots harder things than refuse cookies in my life.
Have a great day and a great weekend.
I am going to go squeeze my kids and enjoy having them home for the day! I LOVE snow days!

I was getting pretty frustrated with myself. I'm down a whopping .2 lbs today. I weighed twice after a few minutes to makes sure it was accurate. So I'm at 148.4 At least I didn't go up any more and I'm down a tiny bit in total.
So next week my goal is to write down everything I eat and keep an eye on my calories. I'm lazy about doing that and it can't be helping.
Great job everyone. I hope each week is more successful than the last and we all just keep getting healthier.

I talked to a weight loss counselor today at an LA Weight loss center. I thought that I'd pass on what she shared with me - it may not be new news to anyone, but it helped me.
In order to lose weight, we need to be consuming between 1200-1400 calories per day. Too much and obviously we gain, too little, and our metabolism shuts down a bit to conserve. If we are to lose, we have to stay within this range for at least one week to see a loss of about one pound. So, if we are good on days one through six and then blow it on day seven (which I just did) then we will only achieve maintenance.
Also, if we are exercising and burn 400 calories in a workout but don't add those calories back into our diet, we will again, put our metabolism into conservation mode.
It only takes an extra 3500 calories a week or 500 per day for a week straight to gain one pound.
I think where I am going wrong is that after six or so days of being good, I hop on the scale and see that I am only down .2 or so and then I get frustrated and think "what the heck" and I blow it one day.
I am also going wrong when I exercise and don't add those calories back into the day. Generally I will work out hard one day, rest two, and repeat the process. On the day that I work out, I am just not all that hungry to I don't eat too much.
I picked up a copy of the "Calorie King" and starting tomorrow - yes, Superbowl Sunday - party at my house day - I will start journaling.
It is so easy to mindlessly eat and extra 100-200 calories. I guess I am just going to have to be the calorie vigilante for awhile!
Well, I hope this "food for thought" (pun intended) helps.
No change, still at 160. I started Weight Watchers today on the flex plan counting points. Hope for better results next week. Now if I can just drag myself out of bed and get to spin class tomorrow morning.
Bummer . . . no change. Am biking on a five-day tour next week, so maybe that'll have some effect. I hope, I hope . . .

Hey all!
Sorry I've been MIA lately! We just made the final decision to move across the country this month, so I've been a little busy!
I will post an updated spreadsheet tomorrow. For me, this week's weight: 161.0 lbs. I'm actually fine with this though, because my weight loss efforts have totally been put on the back burner for awhile. In the midst of everything that I have going on, I'm going to be happy to maintain this month. The last time I did a major move (FL to NC 3+ years ago), I gained. My goal is to make NC to OR have less impact on my body! ;)
Oh, and personally, I think everyone is doing really, really well. Even if we aren't losing, we keep tracking, checking-in and trying. Half the battle is not giving up...and I think that's worth a pat on the back. :)

2/2 - 115.5
Yipee!
Flybye -thanks for sharing the info. But I'm confused, I've always been told that you should decrease your calorie intake by about 300 calories if you are trying to lose weight regardless of exercise. So I should be adding 400 calories if I exercise (or whatever I burned)? Doesn't that basically zero it out and I'm back at no weight loss? Just curious since I have been having a hard time losing and I might have my formulas all messed up:eek:

I've read through this thread with great interest!
I also read weight loss threads on other forums where the 'losers' are not athletes...and they aren't having the difficulty in general that there is here. At least the ones that post in their numbers in those other forums ...it's how many full pounds are lost, not in 1/10's, and it comes for them from something like cutting out the soda, or walking after dinner, working up to a mile or two!
I think we've trained our bodies are to be extemely efficient, or: after a few hundred miles of cycling a month, in comparison to 'walks around the block' we'd wither to nothing but tendons and bones if it worked that way with us. We use our fuel well.
I think of weight loss as a curve, and a changing one at that! It changes with age, with weather and season, with your level of fitnes. And the curve is pretty darn shallow at the top, when you're near your ideal weight. I don't believe in the simple calorie count. :p
..and personally, I don't mind a little cushion. In case I get in a bike accident. I may need that bodily reserve of fat! :D
Cheers, everyone!

I think the problem here is that most of these gals are already quite lean. I find for me its extremely hard to get below 22% bodyfat, but with that being said I feel really good at 22% bodyfat so I don't mind. I also think some of these women are making a mistake to track pounds rather than body fat, which is what really counts.
Starfish
02-02-2008, 08:26 PM
Triskeliongirl...not attempting to be contentious...I tend to agree with most of what you wrote.
But, I know that I am nowhere near fairly lean. Although it has been awhile since I've had my body fat tested, I know from those experiences, and what I can readily pinch all over my body now, and how my clothes fit, that my body fat is a good 10 points higher than what I would like it to be. And, I am shooting for a very healthy, normal number, nothing low.
For that reason, it is a lot easier to track pounds for now. In about 20 pounds, it will be time to have body fat tested again to see where I'm at...

!
Or in case of a famine ... or a recession ... or a natural disaster ... or if I lose my job and can't afford groceries ... or if I get lost in the woods for a week ... or in case science finds a way to use fat cells to save baby leukemia patients ... I've got a million excuses for my extra fluff.
Oh, BTW, my DH was in a catastrophic snowmobile crash about 13 years ago, two years before I met him, and the doctors told him he prolly wouldn't have survived were it not for a little extra cushion. I wonder if that's psychologically affecting his motivation for keeping more weight on. Therapy!
Triskeliongirl
02-03-2008, 05:59 AM
Oh, I don't mean to be contentious either, just helpful. I did not mean everyone, but I am surprised how light *some* of the gals are that are trying to lose weight here, that is all, and was trying to respond to the posters query as to why more gals on this board are struggling than on others.
I also can't help but wonder if those gals that are struggling don't have some degree of impaired glucose tolerance. Of course, I am relating to my own experience, but if you *gained* weight when you started cycling, and also *thought* you needed to eat a lot of carbs to do it, so you could be a candiate. I'm not gonna repeat my personal story, just something to think about. I personally think a high protein/low carb diet is just an *easier* way to lose weight because it puts even a normal person in a biochemical/hormonal state that favor fat burning. So, I am just throwing this out for those of you that are restricting calories but not seeing a loss.
And lastly, congrats to all of you that are making healthy changes, even if the loss has been slow. Slow loss and/or maintenance sure beats a gain now, doesn't it!

.....making a mistake to track pounds rather than body fat, which is what really counts.
Agreed, I am trying to lower my body fat, which seems to be an even slower process. I am at the high end of the normal range, now and would like to be at the middle of that range. Not expecting miracles, but I know it won't get any easer as I get older!

Perhaps we should have included height in the original posts? That's something that really needs to be taken into consideration when comparing our progress. While I'd be emaciated and likely malnourished at 115 lbs, someone who is only 5'0' and of a different build than me, may still have fat to lose at that point. It's really all relative. If my weight was 170, I'd be very overweight...if my friend who is 6'0" and already lean weighed less than 170, she'd probably scare the pants off her family with prominent cheek & rib bones! We can't just look at starting weights and make assumptions about how much weight a person needs (or doesn't need) to lose.
AND...keep in mind that while I am 5'4' and can have an 18% body fat at 135lbs...135 could easily be too heavy for somebody else who is 5'4" but with a different build.
We are all tracking body weight, because it's a very easy measure to make and it is 100% objective (while it doesn't always feel that way!). What is important is that we all recognize that it's not the ONLY measurement of success. It's obvious that we all do realize this, and personally, I think it's a nice change of attitude from other weight loss groups where the women are not already athletes! :)

Hi guys (girls ladies women... peeps),
I've avoided this thread for two weeks as GLC's spreadsheet shows. Guilty as charged :(.
I'm still sort of in the challenge (if I haven't forfeited my right by not weighing in for two weeks), and of course I will still pitch in a waterbottle to the winner.
For some reason the beginning of the spring semester has been really hard on me and I've had trouble establishing regular habits -- eating, sleeping, studying, calling my family, you name it. Not sure why, I've done this before, I'm just sort of out of sorts and in a bit of a funk. So I haven't been weighing because I have been gaining and that will just add to my level of frustration.
I will keep trying to get the reins again and once I feel like I've done that, I'll weigh in again. I know this sort of violates the intent of a weigh in thread, so you can kick me off if you like :o, but it's still actually useful to me to see other people working towards their goals.
Congrats to everyone for your hard work & success!
Oh and FWIW, I'm up one more lb to127.5

Same as last week for me 148.6. For some reason I've been really lazy the past few weeks. I think it's a bit of an inertia thing for me lately. Oh well at least I'm not gaining a lot! I'm fine with making slow, healthy changes and having slow healthy weight loss. I'd love to be down to about 130 by June. I'm 5'8" btw.
Congrats to everyone for being accountable and sticking with the whole process.
My goals for next week are to work out more and actually start keeping a food diary.

Ugh, I'm up... 162.4. I too thought about lying or just skipping this week, but then I figured that being accountable is the whole point here! So there it is, in black and white.
I will say that it's TTOM and my bras aren't even fitting this month...so hopefully next week will show a big change. To be fair, I haven't been working out lately, so I don't actually *deserve* to lose! :p I've got 1 month until I start my new job, so I'd like to be back into the 150's by then, so that's my motivation to get off my duff and MOVE. :)
I'll post the updated table sometime this weekend.

Down three more pounds to 199.5.
I know it's fast, but it seems like a glacial pace for all the deprivation. I've been eating veggies and some meat ONLY for 2 1/2 weeks. No dairy, no cheese, NO SUGAR, no booze, no fruit, etc. I can't wait until Monday; I'm supposed to try a piece of fruit and see if that bothers me.
And it does seem like this weight snuck up on me overnight. I did a century in June, a long overnight backpack in July and then all of a sudden it was January and I felt like crap. I guess six months isn't technically overnight. Note to self: Be more aware. Jeez.

O dear...I have gotten waaaaay off track. I suspect it has something to do with adding a lot more intensity to the workouts. I am wanting more naps, and I think, more food. :o
I think I need to reconsider how I am doing my eating now that I am doing a little more time/week and intensity with workouts.
I was hoping to be farther along on the weight loss before the intensity heated up, but we are now into mid-February, and I still have a lot of weight to lose. :(

I am still at 147 - but I do have to tell a short story.
I do Body Pump classes twice a week at the Y, and have been taking them for several weeks. On Tuesday I stopped and asked the instructor a question, and she looked at me and said, "By the way, you look great. You have lost weight since you started and you look awesome".
It made my day. I actually haven't lost an ounce, but my body is taking on a totally different shape at the tender age of 45 and people are noticing!!:)
Even though I didn't lose, I ate clean and feel good. I will keep on..........

Writing this late at night because I'll only have time in the AM to post a quick number and head for work early... but I just wanted to say that I really appreciate everyone being so supportive and working to be healthy together.
For the first time in my 33.6 years, I'm actually watching what I eat very carefully. I'm not giving in to impulse or debauchery. I am on the road to being healthier. I've been fit most of my life, and fat as well for a lot of it. I just can't explain how empowering it is to realize that I might be able to lose enough weight to actually be sort of fast this season. ((Well, I was always fast on the downhills and singletrack. It was just that I always got dropped on the hills.)) It's only mid-February. Riding season for me doesn't start 'til mid-April. I could feasibly be down below my average adult weight by then. Whoopee!
And the AM weigh-in ... 197.5, down two more pounds, 11.5 from start.

CycleSutra - that's a great message! I'm so glad you're doing so well and feeling so empowered. You can do it, you are doing it. Reading that from you was empowering for me.
I'm DOWN this week from 148.6 to 147.4. A miracle, a miracle!! Haha, just kidding. I worked for it. It's probably just water right now, but I started using Sparkpeople and tracking my calories. I realized I haven't been eating unhealthy food, I've just been eating too few calories in the morning and snacking too much later on. And I've been dehydrated and craving salt so cutting down on that has been great.
Also I got a new yoga mat this week and look forward to starting up power yoga again. My old one has been used as a sweat catcher/pad for the bike trainer.
Hope everyone has a good weekend and next week.

I started off quite strong during this challenge, lost it during my anniversary vacation, and have never really been able to get back on track since then. Just can't quite get the motivation back that I had at the beginning to eat nice and healthy.

Ok.. I think the weight is the same -- 174.6lb. Which, I feel is lucky. I worked out more miles, longer swims, longer and harder rides, but my diet this week fell apart!
Sunday I will be going to a conference in Las Vegas with friends for 4 days. This will be a hard week for me -- eating out every meal, etc. I'll have to buy some walnuts and fruit and veggies for snacking on! Wish me luck... taking the swimsuit and running shoes -- I'm sure the hotel has a gym and pool, so at least I can get up in the morning and make amends for my culinary sins of the night before.
By the way -- do we HAVE to stop the challenge? I like the idea of a weekly check in long term -- sort of our own Weight Watchers' meetings. What does everyone think?

I agree! It's been really helpful for me to come here every Friday. I feel much more sane about slow, steady, healthy weight loss knowing I'm not the only one trying to do it.

Ok, I did not record a weight last week.
After a week in CT (cold, no exercies, lots of food & drinking) it would of been dismal...then add a week of having a bad cold (darn that cold weather up north!) with no exercise (but less eating and no wine!)....I seem to stay about the same... but up a bit...118.2.
Oh well! I thought trying a contest with my partner and joining this would really help me get focused. But obviously I am not "internally" motivated enough. Looks like I will be buying a water bottle!
For those of you that are losing--GREAT JOB! Since I know how hard you must be working. For the rest of "us"--at least we are paying attention to it and the best part is we are getting our "you know whats" out there, on the saddle and logging the miles. That is better than many people I know. So keep up the good work!
So here it is friday, with riding plans this weekend (finally feel good enough to ride) and I am pledging to "control" the eating and drinking and get my plan on paper so maybe I can make downward progress on the weight!
Ride on!:D:D:D:D

I totally forgot that today was Friday, so I'll weigh tomorrow morning. I don't think it'll be good because I've not been paying ANY attention to what I ate at all this week. Not good.
I did start eating better yesterday though, so I'm on track to turn this trend around for the last week. I also think that keeping this going is a good idea! I can make another chart for say the next 8 weeks if people want to keep tracking. Personally, it keeps me honest to see the numbers on the screen every week alongside everyone else's. Of course, I say that as if I've actually been keeping up with chart postings! Oops.
I'll get it updated tomorrow when I weigh in, and I'll post it for everyone. I promise!!

Just down one more pound. 131, will I get to 130 and keep it there before the challenge ends next week? Like so many of us my weight fluctuates on a daily basis. I guess I should be happy it's only by a couple of pounds usually. I really wanted to get to a stable 128 during these weeks, so I'm a little disappointed. It doesn't really seem to matter what I'm eating. I can go on an ice cream binge and not gain anything, or really watch what I'm eating and gain 2-3 pounds. Frustrating at best.

Wow, a lot of us are doing very well! Too bad I'm not one of them! :p
You and me, both.
However, I think I am going to do a little better going forward. I bought some really lean beef and cut it into deck-of-card-portions for the freezer, the other day. Since I have been eating one every day, I have been a LOT less inclined to eat between scheduled meals, and I just FEEL better. Kinda think I needed the red meat (obviously the things in the red meat...I know many of you don't eat it).
I have to laugh...I grew up eating a lot of red meat, and my dad (who had the cholesterol of a teenager his whole life, like me) would tell me if I had a cold that all I needed was a good steak! OK...I don't use steak to treat the colds I get sometimes, but his cure for everything was red meat. I guess maybe I take after him!
Back to where I started at 163 thanks to a week of 12-14 hour days at work, snacks from the vending machines, and no time to exercise. Hopefully this coming week will be better.

Well, I am going to put things in perspective first...
Last Saturday, I got hit by a car!
I am lucky that I am alive. An elderly person stepped on the gas instead of the brake while parking her handicapped van and it came flying up onto the sidewalk and hit me where I was standing. The only reason that I wasn't killed right there on the spot is that it also slammed into a cement pole that stopped it in its tracks.
Therefore, I ended up with only a glancing blow - some minor injuries and I have spent the week recuperating in bed. One broken bone and some very serious bruising all over my body. I am looking at the whole event positively since I know what the outcome could have been.
This just reinforces that I need to appreciate each day that I have on this earth because I never know when it will be my last! I am so grateful that I am still here that I can't stop crying. I'm tearing up just writing this post.
So, ladies, I send you my love and best wishes and also am hoping that you are living the best life that you can!
My weight today was 142.1. All in all, I am VERY happy that I am here to send out my water bottle.
So, who won?

Sending healing thoughts your way, Lynette. I agree this and other things help put many things in perspective. I was actually going to post my "story" from this weekend on the trail. It is not as drastic as being hit by a car, but it did put things in perspective for me.
My riding buddy and I were stopped on this great trail (part of the rails to trail system) doing a minor seat adjustment. An older gentleman on a recumbant stopped to chat. He asked how fast we were going and when we said only 16 mph, he was in awe and felt that was fast. He remarked at our bikes, asked lots of questions. He expresssed "wow" of the distance we had rode the day before and the planned mileage. He was "impressed" by our previous accomplishments (an MS 150 in Colorado) and our plans for this year (another MS 150 , bike ride across florida). Remarked how strong we looked. He, himself, was going thru an "herbal detox" since he didn't want to "go under the knife, do radiation, or chemo". He rode 75 miles the day before. Was feeling great.
As we parted I felt really good about myself. I always want to get faster, leaner, stronger. But I took what he said and worked hard to take in deep inside and feel good about myself, my accomplishments and goals. Who knows how much longer he (or I) get to ride. One day it can all be gone.
Now do I still want to train more...yes. I wake on yet another Monday to "watch what I eat", get on the bike more during the week, strength train, etc. Which is ok, all this is good. But the end result is that I enjoy my time on the bike, my time OFF the bike, and try hard to enjoy something each day. Because...to sound morbid...it could be my last. So I rememer the trail yesterday, it was a beautiful day and a great gentleman that shared wisdom without evening know it! Now I can make it thru my Monday!:)
Again, sending good vibes to Lynette!
Flybye

I can only imagine the new perspective that you have on each day. Are you in much pain? Is there anything we can do to help you along with the healing process? Chocolate?? Wait, this is the WEIGHT loss thread, sorry :o
Truly, I am glad that you are fine. Have you had any contact with the elderly driver? How is this person doing? How are you dealing with your feelings toward the driver? Okay, I hope.
Let me know if there is anything that I can do.
