So, all....
2007 has only a short time to go before it's in the hopper for good.
I was on bikejournal.com just a bit ago, looking at the TE club mileage results.
Some pretty impressive numbers there.
Got me thinking.....
My 2007 goal - mileage wise - was 2500. I'm just a few miles shy of 3,000 right now, and can reach that with 2 days on the rollers (yes, I count roller miles!) if the weather turns icky. That will be a personal record for me. Ever. Pretty psyched about that one. I wanted to complete the Civil War Century, and did (it wasn't pretty, but it was completed). I wanted to complete the Seagull Century, but family commitments prevented it. I wanted to commute more days this year than last, and although I haven't tallyed those yet, I think I did pretty well there. I got back out in the woods again this year on my mtb with folks from here and from the local off-road advocacy and ride group....and - importantly - really enjoyed myslf. And lastly, I treated myself royally to a custom bike for my 40th b'day this year.
All-in-all, a good year biking for me. I hope to have good health in the new year to continue.....

So, How did things go for you? Did you do all you wanted to do? What were your big accomplishments for the year?

I fell short of my mileage and climbing goals by quite a bit. I did complete three pretty tough double centuries. I'd call it an okay year.

I won 2 state championships, was second in a third, won the BARR (best all around rider) for the cat 4's and upgraded to a 3, so all in all a very good year for me.
Here's to next year and racing with the big girls.

I surpassed my mileage goal with 5,175 miles for the year. I was hoping for 4,500 initially and then upped it to 5,000. Since I live in the flatlands, I didn't have a climbing goal, but I ended up doing a number of event rides: I did my first century in May at the Horsey Hundred. I did the Ride Across Indiana in July and finished within the top third of about 1100 riders. And I did the Bicycle Ride Across Tennessee in September, which was my first week-long tour. For my first full year of riding, I'm more than pleased.

Perhaps most importantly, I made a lot of friends, learned to ride safely and efficiently in a paceline, led a ride for my local club, gutted it out on some rides that were faster and/or harder than I thought I could handle, and gained a ton of confidence in myself. Now I'm ready for 2008!

It looks like after my New Year's Eve commute, I'll end the year with 3273 miles, well short of my goal of 4000 miles. (In mid-July, I decided that after riding to work every day I didn't want to ride so much on the weekends, so my mileage dropped off.)

Nonetheless, I'll end the year with 159 bike commutes and my first century completed. I did a few mountain bike rides, which I loved, and I got my fabulous new commuting bike, which rides like a luxury car. I got to ride with Regina, Kalidurga, MDHillSlug, Withm, Bike4ever, Sunnyside, and Zencentury from here at TE.

Not a bad year at all...

It has by all accounts be a great year for me on my bike. I had set a goal of 5500 miles (indoor & outdoor) for 2007. As of today I've logged a total of 7303 miles (indoor & outdoor). I pulled out my goal sheet today and I met all but one of goals (mileage on the recumbent I owned). So as it goes I logged 5148 miles on my Univega on the road, 390 miles on the recumbent I no longer own, 241 miles on my new bike and 1524 miles on my trainer. I had set a goal of 4 centuries and I started and finished 9 with the longest being 128 miles. Most importantly, I felt strong and confident on my bikes and with each stroke of the pedals I felt my confidence grow. I've had a great year and all those miles in the end (from June on) were a very cheap form of therapy as well - I'm mentally and physcially much stronger and looking forward to 2008 - what will it bring?

I managed to bike 3400 miles outside this year, with lots of rolling hills. That's really way more than I thought I would do for my first full year of biking, so I'm happy.
For me it's not so much about miles but more about fitness. But sometimes the only way to describe how much you bike is by stating miles, so it tends to seem to give miles more importance that I actually do give it.
My goal for 2008 is not to ride more miles, but to average a faster speed overall. Again, not because speed is that important to me, but rather because a faster overall speed will indicate to me that I am getting stronger. :)

I just posted over on BJ. I passed my last years total of 5300.88 with my current at 5306. I'm a capricorn and I'm thrilled. Had more vacations w/o my bike but just kept at it whenever I could. This brings my lifetime miles to 11000+(I started in Sep 2005 at 57). Yep that's right...big 60 in Jan 2008...wheee what a ride.

I never set a yearly goal for climbing but did start tracking elevation gain after I bought a polar and then an edge 305. That number is 210,188'. how's that really? not so good I bet for folks near some real 'hills'.

Improved my speed(not much but some) 2006 was 13.76 overall with 2007 at 14.2 and my HR avg from 124 in 2006 to 130 in 2007. I really believe I am fitter and am hoping that my interpreation of these few numbers support this hypothesis. You can tell me if I'm wrong so I can get set for 2008!
Reading all your posts(here and BJ) really have motivated me this year..especially when I feel alone(not many of my 'old' friends bike)

Cheers..Happy New Year!

Wow, Eden, you rock!
and Lisa, you left me in the DUST!

I made my goal of 2500 miles/ 4000 kilometers and quit riding in November. There just hasn't been much weather conducive (for me) to riding since then.

All you gals, great jobs!

I surpassed my goal of 3 centuries when we added a self-supported one. We did century out of state, which is a feat when it takes 8 hours to leave the state! Instead of going to New Mexico for a mountain century we opted to go to Disneyworld, so I missed the goal of riding the Enchanted Circle.

My mileage goal is 3,500 and I am 94 miles shy. I have three days and I still think I can do it. At one point I thought I would go way passed it but I have been sick and off the bike too much this year.

My goal next year is 4 centuries, The Enchanted Circle Century and 4,000 miles.

Well I've been in the 2500 mile quest on Bike Journal, but right now I'm about 72 miles short and rain in the forecast for the next two days, so while I'm still going to try to do this - well it just might not happen.

That said, so far I have ridden 427 miles more than last year, and done 3 metric centuries (my first) including the Seagull (metric).

And had at least 6 flat tires (all rear wheel) and bought 3 new tires. When I get a flat, I do it right! Twice I really trashed the tire. Switched to kevlars and got much better wear, but took a 2-1/2" nail last week that really did a number on the tire, tube, rim tape, and probably the wheel too. UGH.

I did not do as many commutes as I would like but I probably did twice as many as the year before. Commuting would be more fun if it didn't usually entail 13 miles of headwinds.

Haven't decided yet what the goal is for next year. Will have to go thru the log and see exactly how many commutes I really did and increase that for next year, and probably up the goal mileage by whatever that number is. Sound like too much math for this late at night.

Oh Withm I've been rooting for you! Partly because you're so close that I'd hate to see you miss it, and partly because I'm not going to make my 2500 mile goal and I figured maybe I could try to have the highest mileage of those who did not make it. :p

I was well on my way to making my 2500 mile goal but had to cut back riding for two months because of injury. At that point, I accepted I wouldn't make it this year but I feel great about what I have accomplished.

• I beat my 2006 mileage by 700 km.
• I climbed to the top of Knox Mountain without stopping.
• I did my first organized metric in 3:45.
• I did my first full century (unsupported) which included over 5700 feet of climbing.
• I cycled about 375km in Provence, France on my honeymoon in July!
• I had many new personal bests for speed and climbing times.
• And most importantly, I had a ton of fun riding!!

Our BARR is just for our state (Washington) and consists of all the State Championship races - so Road Race (second), crit (first), TT(forth, but points for third since 1st place was not a state rider), TTT (ninth), circuit race (I was out of town at another race..), hillclimb (first) and stage race (fifth). The idea is to reward consistancy across the disciplines, though you can do well even if you only race a few races if you win them.... in the men's 1/2 field second place only did 2 of the series, but he won both of them.

I exceeded my goal. Aside from February, the weather was generally conducive to riding outside (drought!) in 2007. Had a lot of stress--hell at work, loss of a beloved dog, addition of a "spirited" puppy--so slogging out the miles kept me grounded.

This year, I sold my Terry Fast Woman to someone who is giving her the outdoor miles she deserves. :) I also got my Seven and my Kona Lisa, both at superb [sale] prices. :D To my surprise, I'm discovering a love of riding off road, even if it's just non-technical stuff.

For 2008, I'll try to keep to my goal of riding every day that conditions are safe/relatively comfortable, but I'm hoping the work situation improves in 2008 so I don't have so much stress/anxiety to burn off. I have a couple of irons in the fire that I am hoping will work out. If not, I have only 9 more months to complete my current assignment, and I will try to make lemonade out of lemons, if the other things come to naught.

I am pretty new to riding, so I only set two goals -

Ride as much as absolutely possible with a huge smile on my face - check!!!

Participate in my first organized ride and do a metric century - check!!!!

I rode 1000 miles, 800 of them solo miles. This year, watch out!!!!!

Sigh - it's a little after 12 noon, been raining all morning and though forecast is for on-off rain, the radar is clearing a little, so I'm heading out to see what I can pull off. Have a non-riding houseguest expected late afternoon through New Years. I explained that I might have to spend some time on the bike but it's supposed to rain tomorrow most of the day as well. I can only hope the forecast is wrong.

Monday should be rideable but chilly. I don't think I'm up for 72 miles all at once but with any luck I can still do this if I can get 30 in today.

On the other hand, my first ride for 2007 wasn't until Jan 6. So does that mean I have until Jan 5 to complete the 2500? Or, looking at it another way, If I started my fiscal bike year on Dec 29 last year, there's 61 miles that could be applied to this year - but that means my year is over now, still a little short. Hmmm.

Off to the races!

Wow! it is so awesome to read what everyone has accomplished! What a great year! you all inspire and encourage me sooooo much!

Hmmm.....I guess my greatest hope at the beginning of the year was to overcome the trauma of Sam's wreck and my own wreck and to try to get back to the fitness level that I was at before.

I'll try not to go on and on, but through everyone's encouragement, especially Mr.'s I feel that I have overcome that trauma. It will always be with me, but It will not hold me back, rather it will continue to spur me on!

I love being on my bike!! I love riding long miles! I love the feeling of exhaustion after riding a distance and difficulty that I did not think possible.

So, what did I accomplish:

6,464 miles (so far) outdoor miles (I don't count cycling class miles)
9 centuries, the longest at 139 miles.
2 triathlon age group wins
3 5k runs at or below 25 minutes.
certified to teach indoor cycling
began to trail run
began to do Pilates class.
completed the year without a major injury.

It's been a good year!

For next year, I don't want to chase the number of miles that I did this year. I'd rather chase speed. I want to ride faster and run faster. I want to improve on my triathlon times. I told Mr. that I wanted to ride more and he was offended. He feels that I ride too much. I had the opportunities this year to ride and he feels that I neglected things. So I want to be able to accomplish my goals without making him feel that he and other things are neglected.

All of you inspirations... all of you

From winning championships to reaching mileage goals to conquering hills to not crashing (I will diplomatically avoid mentioning barfing in cars :p ) to healing and getting active again

I reached my mileage goal yesterday while riding with my nearly-17 son - the 62k ride meant I passed my 4500km goal for the year.

Still got today's ride with my youngest son to do when the cooler evening arrives... and a ride with my partner tomorrow.

Other goals I achieved

- riding in and completing the Club Champs road race

- being placed third vet woman in the Club Champs time trial

- lifting my time trial average to 32kph

A good year :)

My main riding goals for the year were 2500 miles and completing a metric century. Due to injury (and triathlon training) I will only make 1800 miles. Injury also kept me from even trying for the metric century. However, I went from basically being a non-swimmer to doing 113,000m this year, I ran 250 miles, and I completed 2 triathlons. All in all, it was a great year and I'm hoping to tick off these riding goals in 2008.

2008 goals:
175,000m swim
2500mi bike
350mi run

metric century
3 sprint triathlons
$2500 raised for American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure

Well I did a modest 1100 miles since April-May. This in spite of my back problem. I think its getting slightly better with all the Tai Chi and gyrokinesis work, Pilates like, and all the streching exercises I've been doing.

I've tried to ride everyday this week, company shutdown with no pay. I did take a day off altogether yesterday due to overtraining. I couldn't get my HR up into 180's.

Today went for another short ride of just over 15 miles with 900+feet of climb. My HR stayed above 160 for about 35 minutes. And when I finished, I felt like I could have gone for another 5-10 more miles. The hill work is getting bit easier.

I want to put in 20 miles tomorrow and another 20 on the 31st with about 1300 feet of climbing each day.

I guess I have nothing to complain at my age :D :D. Still, its tad hard that I'm way over the hill. I still hate to admit it though.

Sunday forecast is 70% chance of rain for most of the day with temps in low 40s. Ugh. If I get a radar window, I'll go out and ride for an hour or so, but if the forecast is accurate that's not likely to happen.

Monday will be clear and sunny (and windy), (and colder), but I have a plan. I'll do a "tailwind ride" - run the final 42 miles south to Assateague Island, taking advantage of the North wind, and have my friend meet me there with the car. I can get the miles in, then load the bike into the car. If I'm not frozen by then we can walk around down there on the trails a bit, and drive home. And then I'll take a few days off the bike. Well that will be easy cause I'll be back at work again.

This year I only road 2794 miles (so far, still a couple days left, right?), but what I am most happy about is that I finally solved my weight problem. And I don't mean just losing weight, although I did lose and keep off 35 lbs, I mean figuring out the underlying metabolic reasons I was heavy, and how to use diet to both control my problems with impaired glucose tolerance and still cycle. Here are some before and after shots:

So far I am up to 3825 (~100 of them indoors). My goal was 4500, but it's not looking like I'll make it. Winter came early to western NY this year. In Dec. 2006 I rode 412 miles, this month I have ridden 51.
I am planning to try for the same goal next year, hopefully with better results.

I know I've managed to pass 3500 miles. I've lost track of the indoor miles, so that figure is an approximation. I didn't have any big goals last year except to ride more, to get faster and to do the Century in Wenatchee. I guess I met those goals, but that was mainly by switching from a hybrid to a road bike (although, oddly, having ridden faster on the road bike, I can now ride almost as fast on the hybrid. I guess it's one of those limitations of the mind...).
As for this year, I'm pretty sure I will aim for doing the STP or RSVP, but those aren't big, scairy goals; I'm pretty sure I can do either one of those rides, and that it will be hard, and I will have to rise above a certain level of discomfort, but I could probably do them NOW if I had to. I should pick something I can't do now? I could try a tri, I suppose, but I don't really like running or swimming. Just suck it up, maybe. Sigh.

I didn't have any goals for 2007, so I'm very happy with my year! :) I bought my bike last February and I had no idea if I'd like cycling, if I'd be able to do long rides, etc. I made it to 2,722 miles and I did a 73 mile ride around Lake Tahoe. Not bad for a newbie! I would've made it to 3,000 miles but I haven't ridden since the end of November due to tendonitis :(

I didn't have any cycling goals for 2007. It all just kind of...happened.

I took the Road I course and instantly became a total bike nut, making friends I shouldn't have and alienating my family.
I rode my first (and only) century.
Some challenging hills on my commute are a breeze these days.
I learned a whole lot about bicycle mechanics.
I'm having the time of my life.

Goals for 2008? More of the same, only a little less of the inappropriate friends & the family strife!

Awww, now that is a complement! For me what is weird is that I always had a healthy lifestyle, cycled to work, did club rides on the weekend, cycling or active vacations, restricted calories, ate lots of fruits and veggies, but it wasn't until I got a diagnosis from a good endocrinologist that I knew why I couldn't lose weight. In fact, that starting picture of me was after months of biking 100 miles a week and eating 1200 cal a day. On the bike I would feel dead, cuz while there would be glucose coarsing through my veins it couldn't get into my cells cuz I undersecrete insulin. At the same time I make just enough insulin to turn off glucagon which is required to get fat out of storage, so I would be both fat and hungry and low energy all the time. But, everything turned around when this very wise doctor handed me a glucose meter..... So, now I just eat the foods my body CAN metabolize, lots of lean protein and non-starchy veggies. Even healthy fats are OK, and preferable to fruits or starches. On the bike I eat these protein shakes and eat almonds, I have trained myself to use fat and amino acids to fuel even very long rides. I eat more food now than when I was fat. While my answer may not work for you, the lesson is that metabolism is VERY INDIVIDUAL and that diets are not always one size fits all. So, if the standard dietary advice doesn't work for you, instead of beating yourself up about it (like I did for years), find out why.

I achieved my goal for 2007, but it certainly was modest compared to most posts above, LOL! I started biking in February after a long hiatus and managed to log 726 road miles for the year as of Saturday. (Plus another 100 on my MTB.) My goal was 700 road miles.......Next year I'm aiming for 1500................I'm so impressed that Lisa S.H. managed to get in 3400 miles in her "first full year of biking"! Our snowy forecast held back and I had a wonderful crisp, almost windless ride this a.m. for the miles I needed to get to 10,000 ... and :D I did it IN FRONT OF HOWARD :D :D :D (Last year we were actively competing... this year I'd originally never intended such a ridiculous goal as 10K... but events conspired so I did 400 miles in the last week. (Okay, technically 399.65 but I do still have to go to the bank!)

Awesome!!!! WOW!!! You Rule!!!

I finished out at 6,480 miles!!!! mr. will leave me if I try to do more.

I think everyone who rode be it a mile or 10,000 miles is awesome - we rock ladies!

Like Silver and others I took the bike out for one last spin and closed the year with 7,360 miles.

I hope everyone has a safe and joyous New Year!

Well it took me until today to complete my 2,500 miles for BJ but I got it done - only by riding 34 miles Sat in cold and wind, 24 miles yesterday in the rain (ugh!) and the final 20 today in the sun (finally) but I had to pay for the sun by riding in the accompanying 20-30kt winds.

I haven't decided what the goal will be for next year - waiting to see if there's going to be a new BJ contest for us.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

This year turned out really well for me, despite the down time I had September thru November.

I did 25 metric centuries, 3 imperial centuries and two double metrics. The two double metrics were both brevets. (The second brevet was actually a 300K, but after about 200K I decided gee, this was fun, but I think I'll call it a day now. :o )

My total mileage for the year was 5362, which is way more than the original goal I had set of 4400 miles. Total climbing was about 226,000 feet.

That said, I'm not particularly proud about all the DNFs I had this year. Along with the 300K DNF, I also quit at about 70 miles into a 200K permanent in April when I had the Head Cold from Hell. :p

I also bailed out on the Wine Country 200K on Cinco de Mayo, but I wasn't planning to do the whole 200K route anyhow, and I had many willing accomplices ...

And, I DNF'd on the Siskiyou metric, and Day 1 of Waves to Wine, both of which were in September when I was feeling like crud.

I hope I don't DNF as much in '08 as I had in '07. But, I'm still learning my physical & psychological limits, so I'm very pleased with what I accomplished. And even more important, after my autumn lull, I'm really enjoying riding again.

And maybe in 2008 I'll Harden the F*ck Up. ;)

HeHe, I will have to remember to wear my bracelet for the half-marathon in 2 weeks! Always makes me laugh!

2007 was a good biking year for me too. I don't track my miles (probably should though) but I took on a lot more challenging rides this year. Did the coast ride from home in CA.... 70 miles from Palo Alto, over the mountains to the Pacific Ocean, back over the mountains home. I also finished my first imperial century, the Holstein 100 with lots of climbing and lots of wind. I have JoBob to thank for that one! She was great support and company on my first century! I will miss riding with you Jo :(

On the non-riding side, I finished my first organized run, the 12k Bay to Breakers in SF, and signed up for my first half-marathon (in 2 weeks!), finished my PhD, and moved to TX to start a real job. It has been a good year!

For 2008, I will finish my first half-marathon, hope to do the Houston-Auston MS 150 (on the waiting list), and hopefully at least 1 imperial century. I will also be getting a new bike sometime early in the new year... just have to decide which one!

Now that is some dedication!! I had pretty weather to work with.

Way to go everyone!!

2007 started chaotically, so the only real cycling goal was to do my favorite fundraising ride fixed. Raised some money, got on the bike and rode. Mission accomplished. Got in around 2500 miles too. Some chaos managed, so 2008 is off to a good start.

2007 was good for me too. I didn't keep track of miles, but those last few months of our tour were tough. We considered giving up at one point, but kept going. Shortly after that my mom died, which would have given us a very easy out - but we didn't quit. We ended up making it all the way to Connecticut, so we were happy!

I'm also happy about my commuting. All fall, I think I drove to school only about 6 or 7 times - all the other days I rode my bike. It's only 7.5 miles each way, so it isn't a big deal - but the fact that I keep consistent with it is huge!! All my studnets think I'm nuts to ride my bike through the snow and rain - they look at my bike in my classroom and just shake their heads.

Looking back, I'd say that I probably exceeded my goals for 2007.

I wanted to ride as many miles as 2006, but missed out on that mark by a bit, finishing with 5153 (vs. 5722 in '06). The miles were definietly more intense, however!

Here's the breakdown for me:

Road bike: 2256.6
MTB: 464.1
Tandem: 1065.9
'Cross: 972.6
Trainer: 394.8

Other goals for the year were to race more (competed in 48 races with only 1 DNF due to a crash), upgrade my 'Cross license to compete at the Elite level (I ended up upgrading both my road and 'cross licenses to Cat 3 after some VERY good results at the beginning of the road season) and to set a PR at the TT as well as re-take the tandem TT record (I did set a PR at the TT with a time of 23:56 for 9.75 miles, but the tandem record eluded us this year despite coming within 2 seconds). I was also the club member who competed in the most TTs during the season - 14 - earning me a free pass to next year's series!

Much of my 2007 success is owed to the encouragement and support of my DH, teammates and all of you here at TE! Thanks to all of you for reading race reports, telling me that I do not suck (:D), and just being there to offer support when needed.

2008? The sky is the limit! How do I top a year like this one? I think I'll revel in these accomplishments some more before I decide on my cycling goals for the coming year.
