I hate eating bananas but need the potassium! I am having bad leg cramps and I know it is in part from a deficiency in potassium. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get more potassium while passing on the bananas? I know I can take a pill, but if there was another way, I would prefer that.

Here's a short list of foods with potassium that I found on the net.

Apricots, dried 10 halves 407
Avocados, raw 1 ounce 180
Bananas, raw 1 cup 594
Beets, cooked 1 cup 519
Brussel sprouts, cooked 1 cup 504
Cantaloupe 1 cup 494
Dates, dry 5 dates 271
Figs, dry 2 figs 271
Kiwi fruit, raw 1 medium 252
Lima beans 1 cup 955
Melons, honeydew 1 cup 461
Milk, fat free or skim 1 cup 407
Nectarines 1 nectarine 288
Orange juice 1 cup 496
Oranges 1 orange 237
Pears (fresh) 1 pear 208
Peanuts dry roasted, unsalted 1 ounce 187
Potatoes, baked, 1 potato 1081
Prune juice 1 cup 707
Prunes, dried 1 cup 828
Raisins 1 cup 1089
Spinach, cooked 1 cup 839
Tomato products, canned sauce 1 cup 909
Winter squash 1 cup 896
Yogurt plain, skim milk 8 ounces 579

Bananas are easy to carry and are relatively clean to eat as far as not running down your chin or something, but there are tons of good substitutes out there. :D

Acorn squash is supposed to have three times as much as banana....

Haven't verified that info though.

Time to make soup!

Wouldn't acorn squash be considered a winter squish along with butternut, spaghetti, etc.?

leg cramps can be caused by many things -- some nutritional, some not. in addition to potassium, the following deficiencies can also contribute to leg cramps:

calcium
magnesium
sodium

dehydration can also contribute to leg cramps.

more common in new racers is a change in training/racing intensity.

how did you determine that a potassium deficiency was the culprit?

I second Velogirl. Dehydration is more likely to give you leg cramps, especially at night than a potassium deficiency (unless you're on a diuretic).

This was posted on TE before. I think it is a good article about cramping Go to http://ultracycling.com/training/cramping.html

I've never tasted an acorn! But acorn squash is very good, a relatively small winter squash. Pictures on this page - http://whatscookingamerica.net/squash.htm

For those of you who like acorn squash, Kuri is even better.

Mmmmmmm, squash.

Christmas dinner was homegrown kabocha squash gnocchi with sage butter. We still have six or seven nice-sized butternuts in the cellar. Yum!

Thanks for the links... Have not seen that one before... it does resemble an acorn I guess...

I only really like one type of pumpkin/squash... and that's Butternut... very sweet and yummy no matter how it is cooked :)
