When I was a kid, grandma taught me how to crochet. I used to make afghans but life and other interests (teenage rebellion & working p/t during HS to pay for college!!) diverted my interests elsewhere.

I recently started crocheting again. Now I have a monster afghan going--it's almost half done. Shade of pink, chocolate brown, tan, burgundy. Looking good. Nothing complex. I need to learn some fancy stitches, as I just do basic chain stitching. Now I'm planning the next one!

Anyone else crochet and/or knit?

I do!! I crochet and knit - more knitting than crocheting, these days.

Stitch dictionaries are fun to play with - see what works! I have trouble counting when crocheting (can't tell what's the top of a stitch, and what's the first stitch down the side). So, I do better knitting.

Pictures??

Any good yarn shops up your way (we're staying in Manassas this weekend).

When I was in my 20's I crocheted a lot- lace tablecloths even!
But in my 40's I learned to knit and became a HUGE knitting nut. Sweaters, scarves, hats, but my favorites to knit are socks and mittens. :p
Sadly, when I started biking my schedule became so overloaded that I had to put aside my knitting- that was 1 1/2 years ago. I like to think that make some day I'll break a leg or something and get a few weeks to just knit in bed!

DON"T SAY THAT!!!!! Can you knit in the evening? That's when I do it...I remember films we've watched by what I was knitting at the time....

I knit too! I also do it at night when there isn't much else to do, and I want to keep my hands busy and not snacking :)

No, I usually work in the afternoons and evenings just so that I can bike or walk in the morning. Just not enough hours in my life. It's ok....everything goes in cycles (pun intended). :p

I started crocheting when I was 7. Made several afghans and other stuff, but in my 20s I got into cotton thread and doilies. I made hundreds and hundreds of doilies and snowflake type things. Then I stopped.

I had a group in friends in Memphis that I referred to as the Knitting Cult. I'd never knitted before. They were always always knitting wherever we went. I have some great wool socks that some of them made for me over the years. I LOVE each and every pair. But I resisted learning because of my carpal tunnel syndrome and just because I don't want to be in the Cult. ;)

However, my DIL knits woolen pants for her baby to go over cloth diapers, infuses them with lanolin and they don't leak. They're great. When she was visiting a couple of weeks ago she dragged me to a yarn store. Long story short, I am now learning to knit socks! I should have picked another project to actually learn how to knit, but now that that learning curve is over, I'm looking forward to having my own wool socks that I knit myself! As soon as I learn to turn a heel. lol. (I've been using this site with videos--knittinghelp.com.)

The carpal tunnel was a bit of an issue, but I adjusted and I don't think knitting will be an issue unless I do it for a long time every day for a many days

Yes yes yes. Knit and crochet (and weave). Love it. Am a total yarn fiend, as anyone who came to the TE/Bruno party will confirm.

I also used to be a weaver ....(in fact, I think I need to sell my table loom so I can pay for my bikes  )

Karen..I too was knitting socks...and got frustrated by the heel event too....

Yes, I was crocheting all kinds of complex doilies in my 20's too! :)

Learning to knit by knitting socks is a heck of a way to get started!  If you get stuck, go back to starting to knit something more simple. Sock heels are somewhat daunting even for intermediate knitters.

This is a coincidence...do any of you know where I can get a pattern for those gloves with no fingertips? After a 40 year hiatus I've decided to knit again.

The building I work in is so cold that people are wearing them. (Imagine coding programs with gloves on!) No one's obtained a pair recently so the lady who knit them has retired and moved away. Any pointers? Thanks!:)

My mom made a lot of these (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-70s-Knit-CROCHET-Hippie-SWEATER-Vest-Top-XS-S_W0QQitemZ310005698626QQihZ021QQcategoryZ48903QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting) for me when I was in junior high. They were quite the thing but I somehow don't think they'll be making a comeback.

I also do a lot of knitting and crocheting. I spend almost two hours a day commuting on the train. That's when I do a lot of knitting these days. And in the evenings watching tv. Currently I'm on a baby-clothes-knitting-spree. Several friends are expecing or just had a baby and I'm making jump suits and jackets and teddy bears and booties. I have a long list of projects I'm wanting to do though. I've finally figured out how to do the heel on some traditional Norwegian socks, so I want to make a few pairs of those. I've got some repairs to do to a sweater I'm making for BF. And I want to make myself a sweater again.

I do have a pattern for fingerless gloves, but it's in Norwegian so that might not help much. But I'm sure there are patterns on-line in English.

I had a top like that (but I wore shirts under it)!
Mum made us afghans too and Dad would crack the walnuts with a hammer and get them exactly in halves was very pedantic for the Duration about saying "the War in Afghanistan" coz othewise it sounded ridiculous.
You can buy yuppy-fied ones in kiwi coffee bars

I'm a knitter, since I was 8 years old, and a Filet crocheter... yards and yards of white delicate edging that I never did anything with.

carpaltunnel:
I haven't made these myself, but here are some instructions for fingerless gloves from knitty.com.

That Cigar style makes a lot of sense.

i love these fingerless gloves. I'm unfortunately not a knitter and I saw a pair of fingerless gloves at target but didn't buy them. of course when I went back to get them they were sold out.

Ebay or order from Target online - looks like shipping would be free-

I'm a luddite--no scanner so no picture.

I really like the color combo. It will be a warm bugger, too.

I like to knit- I'm working on a pretty variegated color shawl w/ fringe right now. I want to tackle a sweater next. I crochet a little. not much. Jenn

Just for your general information- you've waited so long that you can now skip the scanner phase altogether and just get a digital camera and load the pix directly into your computer in seconds. :D :p

Or you could shoot film and have it put on a disc when you get your negs developed. Even that's old technology.
