just wondering....

what kind of pedals do most riders use on their cross bikes? I use Look on both my road and tri bike but have no idea if that's a good idea for a cross bike.

TIA

It seems that alot of riders use the Shimano XTR's or Crank Brothers Eggbeaters or Candy pedals. I have the Crank Bros. Candy SL, which have the same features of the Eggbeaters with a bit of platform. When racing, they are easy to clip in and out of. Also, they are lightweight and shed mud and debris very well. For the money ($65 new on ebay), I would highly recommend them. I also like the fact that Crank Brothers sells a rebuild kit for $15 that makes it easy to keep your pedals feeling like new.

If you intend to race cross you will, at some point in each race, have to get off your bike and run - so recessed a cleat shoes/cleat system is pretty much a must.

thanks for the tips, I wasn't sure which way to go.

Yes, a mountain pedal / cleat / shoe system is a must in 'cross. I have used the Time mountain pedals (ATAC) for years, which are fine and quite popular. I just (yesterday in fact) switched to Crank Bros. Eggbeaters, and they worked well. I thought they were a little easier in 'n out than the Times.

I have been using the Crank Bros. Candy all season and am not really fond of them. I've found it tough to clip in lately, especially in yesterday's race (even with new cleats). I think I'll try something new for next year.

I use a wellgo spd type mountain bike pedal - it is just a shimano spd knockoff just like i use on my mountain bike.

I do egg beaters too. They do a great job of keeping the mud clear.

Nice to see you at Palmer yesterday Sally! You had a better day I gather than Sterling?? I loved the course yesterday. My favorite so far!

Good to see you, too, trigirlpink! I had a good race, much better than Sterling, although, that huge run-up was kind of insane. I was always ready to just stop going up that thing, never mind RUN up it. How did your race go?

Not to shabby! I was prepared to be LAPPED with the field we were in coupled with the 45 min race time and I was at the back part of the course right before the icky run up "wall" hehe.. but It was a break through race for me in the sense that I was able to do 2 things

Feel for the first race this season that I was in control of my bike and I didn't feel tetative in the woods with all roots and rocks and I was able to stick to a wheel for an entire lap and then was able to pass her with a lap left to go.

I have to laugh... I was the FIRST woman to cross the finish line after 1,2,3 finished right in front of me so I knew I didn't have another lap. I was happy not to have to do the "wall" run up again!! Yikes!
