View Full Version : Short Reach Shift Quality?

I am considering short reach shifters for my next bike, or maybe this bike. One question I don't think I've seen on all the SR discussions:

Aside from ease of reach, what is the shift quality of the SR shifters like, compared to the regular shifters? Does the shifter itself affect the quality much, or is that mainly in the derailleurs anyway?

So, for you women who have R-700 or any other type of SR shifters, I would like to know how they compare to, say, DA/Ultegra or Record/Chorus, or whatever you used before.

Thanks for any help! :)

I believe the R-600's and 700's are part of the "High Grade" line and are basically the same level as Ultegra.
I have a set of Sora short reach shifters on my cross bike and to tell the truth I don't find that they are much different feeling (as far as how my hand fits them that is) than any of the other ones that I have. I think I can maybe get an extra finger tip around them??

My road bike has R700's and ultegra. I love them- the reach is soooooo nice (I can ride the drops on descents and still break- not something I could do on my old bike). While I've never used DA and don't know what that's like, I find the shifting is great (My old bike had ultegra shifters and a 105 front derailler- the R700/ultegra combo works much better).
