This story was listed on my bike news headlines news reader thingy this morning.

What was he thinking?

He's 36. She's 21.

Making out in public "all evening."

Ewwwwwww

This is SOOOOO High School.

My opinion of Lance just dropped about a million points. Ewwwwwww.

this cracks me up, as i got an email from my niece today with the subject Ewwwwwwwwww, then a link and her text said, tell me this isn't true. and i replied that i didn't even have to click the link, that i knew what it was about.

he walked by me on saturday, literally elbow to elbow. had i known then what i know now, i'd have said "dude, really? what, was britney busy?"
(no i wouldn't, cause i had in mind lots of things i'd say if i was ever close enough, and instead i just stood there, mouth agape, looking like a school girl).

but i have to admit, i still love him. (my niece and i call it the hugh grant factor, we know we shouldn't love him, but we do anyway). working in oncology, i have great respect for what he has done for the cancer community as a whole, and personally, the inspiration he gives my sister to fight a cancer that has very bad odds. she just keeps saying - well i'll just have to be lance.

he could have taken the celebrity and done nothing more, but he has used it for some really good things. not that it also may not have gone a bit to his head. :)

I would have to say that I don't think that Lance and Ashley is a good thing. But I don't say this based on the age difference (more based on the past behaviours of both of these people and their most recent less than discreet actions)  . I would never judge a relationship between 2 people based on age. You see I'm married to a man who is 26 years my senior. I was 20 when we met. We've been together for 16 years, married for 7 and we have a very healthy married relationship, better than any other couple I know.

I still admire Lance. He's done some stupid things, but so have a lot of us. It's just that his get plastered all over the front of magazines. He's human although his athletic feats might lead you to believe otherwise. What he's done for cancer research is amazing.

Me too. I just really like the guy, I always have. I have to work on Sunday or I would have come into the city to watch him run the Marathon.

I think I will watch one of the entertainment shows tonight and see if they have info on this.

I did not mean to offend and maybe I was not so clear - my dismay is based more on the immature behavior (making out in public???? come on....) and the Brittany Spear/Paris Hilton/Ashley Olsen aspect of this whole thing.

Let's face it, if you are a public figure, you are going to be noticed when you engage in silly or embarrassing behaviour.

You didn't offend me at all. I just feel the need to be a spokesperson for the May-Dec relationship thing.

I agree completely with the embarassing behaviour in public aspect. I think it's ridiculous.

Wahine and Kit... +1. Grabs Kit (who is 15 years my junior) and plants one on her, right in front of the nice people. JK. :p I knew what you meant withm. Maybe it was just more of a shock because it's Lance? I think it's probably a big mistake given their reported track records, but since I don't know either of them personally, I'll just wish them luck. Anyway, who else out there is ready to deal with their swelled heads? Might be a match made in heaven.

And Ashley likes older men. According to the article's last paragraph:

This isn't the first time Ashley has been attracted to an older man. When she was 19, she ended her long-term relationship with 30-year-old club owner Scott Sartiano reportedly because the romance was getting too serious. She was also previously romantically linked to 35-year-old actor Jared Leto.

Hey it was a club scene too. Weird things happen at clubs!

I still like Lance for the good things he has done for cycling and for cancer research.

Whatever. They're both adults. I really don't see why people look at celebs to be moral role models. Sure Lance is an amazing athlete who was able to overcome cancer, and for that I admire his abilities and for raising awareness and funds for cancer research. But I don't see what all the hubub is knowing about who he dates or what he does in his daily life. Or how that affects any of us as cyclists or human beings.

I'm not so sure that all of us would survive the constant media scrutiny that celebs are under. Infact I met BiaK at a party where I'd had a little too much. I'm sure our friends would have interesting stories to tell about that night. Some of the rumors I've heard about us the day after were in the very least... interesting. Only some of them were true :o I thank the powers that be that there is no photographic evidence of some of my behavior. Well, who knows maybe there is and I'm blissfully ignorant of it. ;) :p

I don't think May-December relationships are inherently creepy, but I think that May-December relationships with an Olsen twin are inherently creepy, because to me (and I would suspect to most people my age, including Lance) they are still that ugly baby on that stupid TV show and will be until they die.

winner :D

I have nothing to do with May-Dec or any "atypical" relationship. Look at the relationship-hopping done in Hollywood and we don't judge so much, maybe we have higher standards for Lance.

That all being said, I believe that any relationship (atypical or not) should have love and respect to be a relationship. I'm not so sure his have those traits. And his choice in women is a bit interesting. I'd say there's a lot of issues going on there and I really think he needs to grow up a bit.

He wouldn't tempt me at all. Is a fine cyclist and does a lot for his cause but I think he's void of a lot of very important things beyond the physical. That and didn't he "date" Paris H? There's no amount of std testing that could be done that would make me comfy being after that.

Well said, Teigyr. I think as a public figure and THE spokesperson for the Bicycle community he ought to act with a little more dignity. I don't care who he's groping, I just don't want to see it (or hear about it) .

I think celebrities do have somewhat of an obligation to be careful about what they do in public, since they are role models to so many young people.

But...... who here, maybe once or twice, has gone a little overboard with the PDA's after a night of drinking? Come on, let's see those hands...:o

:) :) Hand up here!...Oh, Silver's too!:) :) I'm not against PDA. I LOVE my wife and have no problem showing that.

BUT, even tastefully, I think that the ability to discern the right time, place, and impact on others is a mark of maturity and class.

At the risk of being judgmental and with total respect and support to genuine May-December relationships, I think that for him to do this in such a public way is a sign of insecurity over the loss of his flagging youth. If it turns out to be a true relationship...which I don't think it will... then I will be proven wrong...

I live in a college town...even IF I was unmarried, I would never hang out in a college bar trying to make out with a 21 yr old co-ed...and there's not one ounce of prudish in me...

OK, I'm not Lance OR Ashley BUT my dh and I are both teachers and we live in our school's catchment area. We were dating while teaching at our school and we had to be careful and refrain from excessive PDA etc because we were running into students everywhere we went, not to mention parents in bars or restaurants. Role models have to take that extra step. It's not easy. It would be nice if celebrities did too.

Tuckervill
11-02-2007, 04:08 PM
I don't think celebrities are role models. I think they're just folks who get put on pedestals that they don't deserve. I certainly don't want my kids "looking up" to them. Thankfully, my kids have never been the types to do that.

As far as Lance having some crisis of manhood...he's only 36 and is mighty fine looking--he probably has women throwing themselves at him all the time. And his ego HAS to be huge to pull off 7 TDF wins. Those kinds of personalities don't think about their flagging manhood too often. She's of age, and from all accounts he wasn't holding her down.

Anyway...

First off, I just need to say that by all accounts, they were making out in a club. To be fair, if you go into any kind of popular club, if anyone is there, you will see many people making out. If people aren't making out everywhere by 2am, you're either in a karaoke bar or an old folk's home.

Second, being one of the many couples being overly affectionate in a club, they only made a blip on the radar because they are who they are. Bob Bobson and Jane Smith wouldn't have been noticed. No one would have gone 'eww', at best, people would've looked at them and said that either he scored or she was into older guys. Nothing more.

I just think it's hypocritical that there's such a response because they're celebrities.

However... I think that he's kind of a dumb jock and she's... well, a 21 year old blonde celeb who hasn't proven herself to have any kind of real depth of character as of yet. Because of that, I still feel justified in posting this.
:D

Top Reasons why Lance and Ashley are an Item
10. Lance wins all the way around. just look at the girl and think about it; he can take her out to dinner, and when he's done, pick his teeth with her.
Score one for oral hygiene!
9. a. He can go riding with her and not worry about accidentally drafting- the girl actually whistles in the wind!
9. b. He can go riding with her and be confident that his bike weighs more than she does!
8. He finally has someone as paranoid about their weight as he is. They can sip absolut or red wine together and talk about the evils of carbs in the off season
7. He may have found an intellectual equal!
6. Paris Hilton was occupied at the moment.
5. The less experience they have, the better he is in bed
4. Twins- date one and think of the other... or both?
3. His admirers wondered if he could date any lower on the ladder
2. His publicist wondered if he could date any lower on the ladder
1. It's so cool to not only explain what the TDF is over and over, but to consistently impress someone by knowing where France is.

Isn't Armstrong married? Or did he divorce his wife?

teigyr
11-02-2007, 09:08 PM
He was married. They got divorced quite a while ago and it was kept pretty quiet. He was briefly with Paris Hilton (I believe) then Sheryl Crow amongst others. I really don't keep up on that stuff, contrary to how it seems :o

Like some of the others here, I just picked up on the Olsen news because it was like "hey, that was that scary/creepy looking kid from Full House!"

As much as I believe in privacy, I do kind of wonder what happened in his marriage.

Wahine
11-02-2007, 10:28 PM
The statement from his now ex-wife was that they experienced way too much in a very short time and that it was an excessive strain on their relationship that neither of them could sustain.

As for Lance being over the hill and grasping at something to make him feel younger...I agree that Lance probably has women that would throw themselves at him, I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to knock his wheel off either (if I was single of course) but Mr. Silver still has a valid point. Lance is an athlete first and foremost and while he is still hot, he is not at the height of his game, nor can he expect to continue to be the same athlete that he was. That is very hard on a person's psyche, losing the thing about yourself that you most connect with your identity.

Kit - you crack me up.

SouthernBelle
11-03-2007, 04:45 AM
The report is that his wife is who wanted the divorce. Plus Sheryl Crow has nothing bad to say about him. I think she wanted kids & he didn't want any more. (She recently adopted). I have no opinion about his personal life or him personally, but his exes don't bad-mouth him.

Making out in a public place was kinda dumb, but I expect I've been dumb, maybe once. :p

I never hear anything at all about the Olsen twins except jokes about how skinny they are. I heard a long time ago that they were multi-millionaires before they were 18, and that when they turned 18 they took over their company. I think that's a pretty big thing, and it gives them credibility in my mind. I can't really put them in the same category as Britney and Paris. Unlike B, they don't seem like ****s, and unlike P, they worked for their money.

So what if they party? They're only 21. So what if they make out with guys? They're only 21. Who cares who it is? More power to 'em!

And I my son is into Full House on Nick or wherever it is so I see a lot of episodes (mmm, John Stamos...), and still think they were cute little girls who didn't seem exploited.

Kit... still laughing... tooooo funny.....

I'm with everyone who has said... control yourself in public (whether you're a celeb or not) although in a club where you expect to see peoples making out is kind've a mitigating factor.

And I think Lance is likely to go through some kind've identity thing too... he has been so dedicated and disciplined for so long - I imagine "forgo-ing" many opportunities for "romance" and now here he is with time and opportunity and wondering who he is now without a team and a tour to guide and fill his every day. I'm gonna cut him some slack...

When I was 11 years old, I was in a bounce house with the Olsen twins, who were 6 at the time. One of them stepped on my wrist and then shot me a dirty look. I can't help but think of that whenever I hear of them.

I guess I should add that I interpreted it as a mean look, but maybe it was just her normal facial expression, who knows. I have no idea which twin it was.

The other night DH and I were having dinner, and at the next table was a running club having their post-run dinner. We couldn't help overhearing a lot of their conversation. The topic of the NYC Marathon came up, which led to Lance, which led you know where. I just about burst out laughing because of how much time we've spent on the topic here. :D

But really, has it been so long since y'all were in the lustful hormone-driven throes of a new relationship? Well, okay, it HAS been that long for me, but at least I remember it ;) . I don't know why we need to hold public figures to a higher standard than ourselves. If they're happy and not hurting anyone else, more power to them.

Like Wahine, I guess I just have to chime in. When I was married (to a man 20 years older than me), we both endured all kinds of rude comments & assumptions about why we were together. Some of the comments were made innocently, but after the 100th time, still bugged us a little...I mean, what gives? Others were downright snide and hurtful.

I know this thread is discussing all kinds of things, from opinions on everything from celebrity-worship to PDAs, not just the age difference. But, as one who put up with comments from well-meaning family to total strangers, it just gets old.
