My husband and I are planning a trip to Maui next month for our 25th wedding anniversary. I am VERY afraid of heights, but being in a plane doesn't bother me, actually I enjoy being next to the window during the whole flight.
I have heard from several people that a helicopter ride is a lot smoother and better then being in a plane. I keep having second thoughts about going on it (but I have to now, because I made the reservations). I have asked to be seated NEXT to my husband so I won't be right next to the window. I'm afraid to much window space would make me really afraid. Has anyone been on one who is afraid of heights--how did you handle it?

I'm not "afraid" of heights, but I do get slightly uncomfortable in high places, and I loved my one and only helicopter ride. I also don't like tight spaces (boy, I sound like a nut case, don't I?), so I think having all the glass, or whatever helipopter windows are made of, and being able to see all around me made it more comfortable than being cramped into a seat in a plane with only a tiny window. You'll be so captivated by the scenery that you'll forget that you're up high!

I haven't been in a helicopter but I was in a six seater plane recently - sitting in the co-pilot's seat (don't ask). I found it really great fun even though I'm also afraid of heights. I don't seem to get that fear in planes.

I did recently go up a mountain in Canada in a gondola and that was terrifying! But it was an experience not to be missed.

You should go for the helicopter - I think it will be more like the small plane experience.

Go!

You'll love it, and trust me (DH is a helicopter pilot) they're safe.

I flew in one from Long Beach to Catalina Island and it was amazing, I hear Hawaii is supposed to be gorgeous. You'll have your DH there, and if you get comfortable you can always scoot closer to the window.

Have fun, really, you'll have a great time!

My dad is a pilot and has flown thousands of hours in various types of planes...but he doesn't like being up on ladders! It's two different types of things. You'll be fine!
