Northern California girls - report in!

Snapdragen shaken and stirred, but OK.

I felt it -- I'm working at my office in Alviso. It seemed to go on for about a minute, and the light fixtures hanging from the ceiling were doing a pretty good imitation of the two-step.

Took me a second to remember to get away from the window and find a nice doorway to stand under.

Tried to call home to see how the housemates and dogs are, but the line's busy.

Not a lot of info yet:

For us to feel it up here in Marin, on rock, I knew it would be pretty big. Snap looks pretty close to where you are.

Yowza.

Felt it here in the East Bay, Hayward. I heard before I felt it. It was a long one, not strong but with enough time to identify it as "this is not the neighbors video game", grab the dog, the spare leash by the door and go outside. Neighbors were outside too.

Off to check the Earthquake supplies.

What fault?

5.6? Oh cr*p, cr*p, cr*p.

Ugh, my house is pretty much on the epicenter. For now it looks like a 5.6.

Was able to get thru by phone -- we have electricity, but most of our neighbors don't. Phones are hit & miss -- circuits are busy. Lots of stuff falling from the walls, so we'll have a bit of broken glass to deal with. Fortunately my favorite clock is still hanging from the wall...

And, most importantly, our dogs are fine! :)

Not dumb. It's been a long time since I've been in one and most of the time I was woken from being asleep. There is a sound but it's more of a "everything is shaking" sound. I don't know if you were outside and nothing was there that there would be a sound. There probably would be one.

It's unnerving to hear breaking glass and things falling and just hoping it will END!

CC, when the Nisqually Quake hit, 6.8 on the Richter scale,
INSIDE the building we heard quite a bit. EVERYTHING was rattling... I didn't hear the floor cracking open, there was too much other background noise.. sort of the noise you'd hear on a train going down the tracks...

Damn girl-you really felt it!

That's a big 10-4!

I usually don't feel earthquakes unless they're pretty substantial. I felt this one, and I'm here in Alviso working late (rather than at home.) My housemates say that it was shaking so badly at home that they could barely get their footing.

I guess I'd better finish up here and go home to clean up the damage....

Sometimes, it kinda rumbles, sometimes I've heard it, or maybe feel it first. Start to hear bookcases vibrate a bit. One night all the neighborhood dogs were barking, all of them. I slept downstairs.....nothing happened.

I was in a 6.5 a couple years ago at christmas time. Lucky only 1 death but ton's of damage. We were lucky and only lost a german santa clause off the fireplace. Funny I was on my bike when it hit. That was weird. Like I was really drunk. Then looked up and saw the phone polls swaying and ran to a dirt road to get away from falling wires. Some lady was screaming like it was the end of the world.

Just got home.

I was driving home at the time. I was stopped at a stoplight in Menlo Park, and my car suddenly started shaking.

At first I thought "geeze, the car is idling really rough, I shouldn't have put off that tuneup for so long" but then it occurred to me the engine was running just fine.

I had the car radio on KCBS so about the time it finally dawned on me that it the earth that was shaking up the car, the reporter on KCBS was saying that the studio in San Francisco was shaking.

As I was heading towards the Dumbarton Bridge they came back on the air saying the epicenter was near Alum Rock. Oh great, right near my home, and right near the bridge I'm just about to cross. gah.

I tried to reach LeeBob on the cell phone but couldn't get thru. He was painting our spare room today and I was hoping he wasn't on a ladder at the time ...

Got across the bridge just fine, the house is still standing, and Lee was done with the painting hours ago (oh, and our spare room looks great!). Lots of shaking but no damage. So all is well in my little world.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but on the radio they were interviewing a guy from the USGS just before I reached home. With a mag 5-plus earthquake, they're saying there's a small possibility of a stronger quake w/in the next couple of hours. Get out your flashlights. :p

Check your gas hookups!

Fortunately we only have electricity at the house -- no gas. (I'm going to refrain from any flatulence jokes, since snap is the moderator and this is a family forum....)

I will make sure the water heater is still secured.

Oh, and jobob, thanks for the cheery news to expect a bigger & better quake shortly.

And you went across? Hot dayuhm you're brave, girl.

When the big one hits we'll need more than a strapped hot water heater and a flashlight

The quake was on the Calaveras fault according to the news.

Weird, we didn't feel a thing here in Concord.

The epicenter was close to Sierra and Felter roads (in addition to Meli-sam's house). Being near the epicenter of a 5.6 must have been pretty intense.

Glad it was light and everyone's OK.

A few years ago, we had a 5.0 tremor in Evansville. The next day, there were city workers using jackhammers outside my office building.

The level of vibration from the jackhammer equaled the level of vibration from the earthquake.

Gave me a new respect for that city worker on the street holding on to his jackhammer!

So, I did a google, got this site:
http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Maps/122-37.html
and it's showing TWENTY FIVE wee bitty shakes since the "biggun" last evening.

Seems your area has a case of the hiccups!

dumb q but you can hear an equake?

c

Not a dumb q coming from outside of equake-country, but the answer is definitely "Yes!" When the earth moves, it makes noise. When megatons of rock are breaking and shifting against one another and the shockwaves go billowing outwards through what we otherwise think of as solid matter, yes, it makes noise. The ones I've experienced sounded, and felt, like a heavily loaded but short freight train, or an 18-wheeler, rumbling by.

5.6 is considered moderate, but "moderate" starts in the mid-3's and the scale is logarithmic, so 5.6 is getting up there in the vicinity of "big".

okay, I've been here almost 10 years and this is only the 4th quake I've felt but it was definitely the biggest. I was sitting on the couch with bf in mtn view and it was his first. we just looked at each other and simultaneously said "earthquake." we both stood up, hugged, and then he ran out of the house (silly boy) to see what had been damaged.

this was definitely more a roller than a shaker in my experience. and we definitely heard it. it seemed very long to me (compared to my other experiences) -- 10 seconds or so.

I was kinda giddy all night. he couldn't sleep. I'm glad everyone's okay.

I am a 3rd generation californian so in some ways i am used to earthquakes but they still scare me. My husband loves them caus ehe says for just a few moments it's not he's fault (no pun intended).

Glad to hear you are all ok..

I remember feeling them all the time when I lived in Windsor. The Geysers are nearby, and they throw off mini quakes all the time. I used to do daycare, and when the chillin's were napping I would turn the tv down real low and try to nap a bit myself on the couch. Often I would hear a "tink, tink tink" and look up to see the wood blinds swaying a bit on the windows behind me.
very eerie.

And yeah, I was in Loma Prieta. I lived in an apt. at the time and I remember going to the doorway, and when I looked out the entire building was swaying back and forth. Scariest thing I'd ever seen!
