View Full Version : Guilty Conscience -- bah humbug!
So, here's the scenario. I live in Mpls, the weather will turn cold very soon and today is gorgeous for late October. I haven't ridden in 3 wks due to my son being with me FT (the ex has been out of town). Also, I'm into wk 3 of a NEW job so I can't really cut out early, least not at 3 wks . . . and I keep looking out my window at the sunshine. I really really really want to go home and get on my bike. Now, I could do that after I get home from work but the light starts to fade very early this time of year. Yes, I am a self-confessed wuss -- I should ride late into the night and enjoy it right? I've got the lights, fluorescent jacket, etc.
Came home last night @ 8 pm and passed a large group of bikers -- I cheered them on for being on their bikes, riding in the night, enjoying their passion -- wishing that I was riding alongside them.
Bummer . . . I know that many of you ride year round, day or night and perhaps I need the motivation to get out and ride my bike, no matter what. Any words of inspiration would be appreciated.

I used to be just like you. I would be too nervous to ride, walk or run alone once it got dark. DH used to grumble when I asked him to go and he would say " I don't like going your speed, I don't get much of a work-out". Well one night I decided not to bother to ask him and I went on my own and really enjoyed it. Now it is one of my more favorite times to go out as it is usually pretty quiet, peacefull, and when it snows it makes it that much more enjoyable. Just make sure you have good lights:D

One additional note that when ever I question something or say "someday" I remind myself that life is way too short, and every day is a gift so do what you love to do because you never know when you might not be able to do it agian.

This isn't inspiring about getting outside, but...How about a trainer for your bike? It's not very exciting, but it IS getting on your bike. You're not leaving your son home alone and you're not out in traffic in the dark.
Thank you for all the suggestions. I may just get a trainer for the winter months which would help keep me in shape for spring riding. And yes, "someday" is today -- lately I've been better at making excuses for not riding than just doing it. Time to turn my mindset around . . . :)

I resorted to putting my bike on my trainer last week for my after work rides. Although I can ride backroads and use a light, I know I would not enjoy riding in the dark as I would be consentrating on cracks and what not in the rode ahead.
Put your bike in front of the tv, it turns out not to be so bad :)

Hey Vmax...I feel your pain!
Can you run a few errands by bike after work? That helps me get my fill. Then get out there on the weekend and ride during the day if at all possible.
I invested in a great lighting system and commute by bike a few times a week. Can you do that?
