View Full Version : weird bike, sorry no pictures
I saw the most bizarre thing on my way to work today - a road bike (kind of) with road bike handlebars twisted all the way around so that the brake levers were lying flat on top. Very strange. Ridden no hands (I can see why) by a teenager with no helmet.
I stared at him. He stared at me, grumpily churning along with gears slipping, broken pedal rattling and dry chain squeaking and protesting. Funny moment ;)

I'm probably dating myself here, but that used to be a very common way to set up a "ten speed" in the 1970s. Hybrids and mountain bikes were a thing of the future, so people would buy a cheap ten speed and try to make it more comfortable for riding around town. Not everyone did it, and it was clearly unsafe, even at the time. Crazy. (And no, I never had my bike set up like that.)

My brother did. I recall he had an old junky Columbia ten-speed that he used to get back and forth to work. On a recent visit home, I think it was still sitting out on the patio. However, it's probably not ride-able, as I recall it was rusting into oblivion. [Maybe he shipped the bike to Norway! : ) ]
