Despite your threats of bodily harm, here's something about healing http://www.foodandlife.com/healingbonesresearch.htm

Well... I'm no nutritionist, but if I'd been in your situation I'd write a long and detailed shopping list with lots of fruit, vegetables, tea, wholegrain crackers and some very dark chocolate and send hubby to the store. And tell him to not bring back any "comfort foods" unless I'd specifically asked for them. Especially not anything that can be microwaved...

Then I'd make some smoothies and some massive salads with vinaigrette dressing and eat as much as I felt like, and snack on tea, biscuits and a little chocolate. I have trouble overeating on salad/raw veg. no matter how many potatoes, beans or avocado I spike it with, but I'll happily gorge on hot food.

CC - treat you body gently.

lph had some good points. Add to that you still need protein. And you probably need extra calcium right now too. Snack often. Drink at least 1 litre of water per 50 pounds of body weight each day. (if you're like me you'll sip water all day to accomplish this) If you're really craving something in particular, you might actually need that nutrient for healing. Listen to your body carefully, it knows best!

And visualize butterflies. They are there to help!

Hugs,
~T~

I don't think I'd be cutting back on anything. Your body needs the same level of nutrition to heal that it does to perform feats of athletic brilliance.

I agree with knotted. Twice now in the past 2 years I have had injuries(cracked rib and then knee surgery). Each time I was worried about gaining weight, but I ended up eating the same as I normally would and I lost weight! Sure I lost some muscle, but I didn't gain any fat, if anything I lost some of that also. Your body needs you to fuel it so it can heal, it takes a lot of energy to heal those injuries! So just listen to your body and eat when it wants you to.

That website Zen pointed out seems like a good one. Drink more if you feel like you need to, but do take a Vit D & Calcium supplement if you aren't already!

Back to what Knott said, your resting metabolic rate goes up after a significant injury because you're cellular activity is increased as you body is trying to repair the damage. I like the analogy of a house. How much work goes into maintaining a house, versus doing a big remodel.

So eat healthy but eat as much as you like. Lots of fluid is good, liquid is the medium in which our cells function and allows for proper nutrient transport etc. Vitamin C is very important for the healing of all kinds of soft tissues, that includes ligaments as well as joint capsules and you already got good advice on protein and calcium.

It's also a good idea to fuel on foods with lots of antioxidents in them like lph said, teas, dark chocolate, dark fruits and veggies, esp berries.

Take good care of yourself.

Yeah, what they said... :)
Eat lots of good healing foods. Protein good carbs etc.
Your body is working hard to get you back on the bike ya know. :) :o :)
How are you feeling today?

WAIT! What did I miss? When did you get hurt? I gotta look for the thread here.

Drink lots - counteracts the side-fx of analgesics
Concentrate on calcium (or your teefs will fall out. The body drags out calcium from everywhere)
Relax and keep the head very still for a few more days

I'm with everyone else on this one- especially lph, who mentioned massive salads... if you're not moving much, then your insides will not be "moving" as much
Don't forget the fiber along with the protein & calcium!

Andrea, that's a really good comment. Most people on stronger analgesics suffer the side effect of constipation, especially if codeine is involved. And that's without the added disadvantage of little mobility.

So yeah, keep pushing the fibre and the fluids.

That is what *I* was hinting at in my inimitable, delicate and lady-like wording.

Wish I knew genteel code words for "stool softener", but if you're not mobile & on the pain meds, sometimes even the fiber can use a little help.

Hope you're able to get outdoors even a little soon!

my friend took me for coffeeeeee at the mall near my house...

i'm not on any pain meds-weeell i don't consider nurofen plus serious pain meds...i take two before i go to bed & that;s it...

i find out more about my knee when i have an mri on sunday & fup appt with specialist on monday..

who knows what i've done to my knee...i may be back asking tons more q's!

K me again :o

For the last few weeks the only place i've been able to sleep is on our couch. 'The main reason is as follows:
1-when i move from a resting flat position to a seated position on our bed, i get dizzy
2-If i try and lay(propped up a bit) a little bit on my right side on our bed & even on the couch, i get dizzy.

I don't mind being injured-the leg brace & sling don't bother me. The dizzyness bothers me  grrr..

Any ideas? Could it be the way the collarbone moved & is pinching on something?

I have a fup appt with the orth dr on thurs. If he doesn't answer my questions to my satisfaction, do i go to my own dr & complain?

Any ideas would be wonderful.

Thanks

you bet! I'd be calling the doc today, not waiting for the next appt.

Dizziness worries me!

Wahine

Dizziness has a lot of different causes. Most of them innocuous but some of them serious. The safest answer is to contact a Doc. I'll send you more details.

Hi,

I saw my ortho dr about my shoulder/collarbone today & asked about the dizyness. I was referred to my normal GP.

I will give it a few more days as this is probably normal after a concussion and will take time to settle.

If it's not better by next thurs, then i'll see my loverly gp :)

How is your shoulder and collar bone? Are you on the mend?

crazycanuck
11-15-2007, 05:20 PM
I'm on the mend :)

The collarbone is healing & will take another 3 weeks or so to heal. I have an ultrasound on my shoulder on Monday to ensure it's ok. I start physio on the area on Thursday :)

All i can say is, i don't wish a collarbone injury on anyone! Owie!

Thank goodness for strapless bras!

THanks for asking Sundial!:)

Hey CC -
Sorry to hear about the dizziness (dizzyness?) chickie - just how bad was that crack on your head? How long do these dizzy spells last when you change position from horizontal to vertical? If it's longer than an initial head rush, then I'd be talking to your doctor. What's your BP like?

(I have mild vertigo permanently from a head injury sustained while a University student, some gmrmorm... years ago)

Here's hoping your bones are knitting well :D :D

You know, I had never thought about the bra issue with a collar bone!

It would probably be good to eat lots of anti=inflammatory foods like spinach and broccoli. I know there's more, I just can't think of 'em right now.

Right..Time for a short update..or a few updates..

As far as i can tell/feel, the BPV has disappeared :) Fark it was annoying!! I only had to do the Brandt & Daroff exercise once...

My knee is still sore/tender where the MCL is..not sure if it's going to feel that way for a while?? I see the ortho on monday.. (at least the leg brace floats  ) but really have no clue what's next..

The main issue for me right now is understanding how my collarbone should feel at this stage of the game. When i swim it's getting used to a whole new feeling in the collarbone area. It's not going to stop me from swimming as i'm going as slow as i possibly can. I also do modified pilates at a studio & the staff have created a post injury program where i work on strengthening things.

My shouler is still quite sore & i can't lay on my left side as it's quite tender. I often can't reach with my left arm over to my right shoulder as it feels as if my shoulder's stuck.

What were your experiences with a collarbone injury??? Any suggestions and does this sound familiar?

Thanks
C
