Today I got a scooter! It is something I have wanted since i was in high school! It was on craig's list. Only 95 miles on it. It looks just like a vespa (well...a little like one), my husband didn't want to get me a vespa because they are hard to work on. it is sooo pretty. Now I can jump on my scooter to go to the store or video store and not hop into my ford f150 to go two miles. It cost $1.90 to put gas in it. And that is good for 100 miles! I am in love. I hope my bike doesn't get jealous? The owner gave me her cute helmit too.

Niiiiice! But when I read the first sentence, I was thinking one of those razor type things the kids ride on. They're actually quite fun.

Anywho.... Enjoy your scooter!

Hey Brandi - we just picked up a scooter this week, too! Ours is a Honda Ruckus (http://powersports.honda.com/scooters/model.asp?ModelName=Ruckus&ModelYear=2007&ModelId=NPS507), and it only had 3 miles on it when we bought it. Of course, I told DH we now need another one, and I am eyeing the lovely Metropolitan (http://powersports.honda.com/scooters/model.asp?ModelName=Metropolitan&ModelYear=2007&ModelId=CHF507)in Pink Hibuscus :D .

I just registered the Ruckus yesterday, so am hoping the weather continues to cooperate here so we get to "scooter" before the snow flies! Have fun.

My son turns 14 in 2 weeks and he wants a scooter, too. The only thing in his price range is a Qlink Axon 50. We don't have a lot of dealers around here. The ones we've seen at Kawasaki or wherever it was--they were in the $4K range. I only want him to have 50cc so he doesn't get on the highway (he is only 14, after all).

So what kind of scooter did you get, Brandi? The Qlink dealer said you should get the kind you can get parts for (not Vespa, because no on sells them here). He said most of the lower-end 50cc scooters are made by the same 3-4 manufacturers in China. Some of them use commonly available (electrical) parts and some don't. So we're making sure if we don't get the Qlink that we get one in that category.

I want to see pictures, too!

Brandi, what fun!! I've been considering selling my motorcycle and buying a scooter, they're just more fun (and cheaper to own). :D

If anyone wants links to scooter forums or scooter info just let me know.

Karen - our Ruckus is a 50 cc, as is the Metropolitan - both made by Honda. Not sure about where you live, but here in MA, you can't legally ride one until you are 16 and have a driver's license.

p.s.
Both of these Honda scooters are in the $2K range

I'm not a scooter gal, but make sure to check out girlbike.com if you haven't. Crystal, the site owner, used to be all about bicycles but unfortunately (for me at least -- I used to be one of her team of women's cycling product testers!) switched over to being pretty much exclusive to scooters a couple of years ago. She does graphic design, and her website is really nice.

Enjoy your new scooter and be careful out there!

In Arkansas kids can take a test and earn a certificate to ride anything under 50cc on the street (eta: at age 10). At 14, they can ride up to 150cc without a license, and 250cc with a license (I think that's right). My son doesn't need a permit at all, but I'm requiring it. He is also eligible for his driving learner's permit at 14, and will get his restricted license (drive with a licensed adult in the front seat) 6 months later if he passes the driving portion.

I really like that kids can drive at 14 here, because that gives them 2 years of supervised practice before they're turned loose on the roads by themselves. It worked well with my other two. I required 200 hours of safe supervised driving before I'll let them get insurance, etc. Neither of them has ever had a wreck.

I took my boy out driving yesterday in a new subdivision where there was no traffic. He was already able to operate the car because he drives our truck around the property when we need it moved. He did pretty well for his first time.

Brandi - any riding yet?

I just took mine out today to go to the next town over and have coffee with Robyn (from the forum). What FUN! It was a glorious fall day although a little crisp. I am DEFINITELY in love with the scooter! Now I am sad that winter is approaching :( .

Now that I've tried this one out, I told DH he needs to get me my own - the Metropolitan in Pink Hibuscus! :D :D :D

Pics, Brandi, we want pics!

Oh, man, I've had the scooter bug for a while now, too. I just talked to the sister of a coworker who has a Honda Elite 80cc that she's selling for $1000. She commuted on it for a summer until she decided to get a regular motorcycle so she could ride on the highway to get to where her boat is docked.

I'll probably go look at it this weekend. This is all I need--another toy! But it's red, so I'm not sure I can resist...
