So I have my first cold of the season. Actually bad timing, since we have our Fall Swap and Sale this weekend to kick off the cold weather season. So I am working 6 days this week - each at least 10 hour days (yes, quite yukky).
My question - what are your favorite cold remedies? Keep in mind, I won't be able to stay home. Unfortunately, I have to work through this one.

Lots of green tea and Zicam lozenges.
I tried buttered rum one time and it seemed to help too.

I use those Zicam nose swipes at the first sign of a cold. It stops it dead. I did use them recently after the cold was further advanced and I think it cleared up more quickly. Colds don't usually do me in, though.

I'm a believer in Zicam...just tried it last season, and it was fantastic. Tasted nasty, but it worked wonders. The tablets or the goo in the plastic spoon both!
From one of DH's Finnish relatives: warm milk with sage, honey (so far, so good) and crushed garlic
Probably a shot of vodka too!

Zicam, tons of Ester-C (it has to be 8 grams a day to make a difference, and regular ascorbic acid will leach all the calcium out of my blood), and REST - no intervals, no sign sprints, no hard climbing, no long distances, think of any exercise I do as maintaining and NOT training. Considering how much you have to work, maybe just lay off the bike for now. :(
If you don't have allergies, echinacea is good. But it tends to ramp up my whole immune system, including the dysfunctional parts, so I definitely skip it this time of year when the molds are high and the pollens are still around. I've read good things about astragalus, but haven't had an occasion to try it yet.
And here's some good vibes --->--->---> .

Ginger Drink from my local Asian market. It's crystallized honey and ginger, and you mix with hot water. Works wonders!

Celestial Seasonings Lemon Zinger.
Thai or any other spicy food will clean you out good.
Cold remedies containing Dextromethorphane/Pseudoephedrine/Acetaminophen or Phenylephrine. That's what my fave cold medicines contain. stops runny nose, cough, congested sinuses.
Nothing.
And/Or:
lots of water, some tea, a tylenol once in a while maybe if I get a headache from congestion.
And lots of Vaseline around my nose.
Chicken soup with extra garlic, and a hoodie sweatshirt to bed with extra quilts on my head!
Microwave some seven up like beverage (not sugar free) to tea-hot for sore throat. Sounds crazy, but...

Lot's of water more then you think you should be drinking! And rest! Colds are funny things. I don't normally take any over the counter stuff for it but I do like that newish stuff called musinex (not sure if I spelled it right) if you have a cough it helps clear it out faster I think. Hope you get better soon!

Juice of a lemon (and scrape the pulp off the squeeser too)
Same quantity of honey.
One small-ish onion chopped up tiny
Add boiling water to fill the cup.
Set aside till cool enough to drink (but still hot). You can also eat it with a spoon like soup.
In 20 min you are a new woman!
btw this is *perfect* timing Just going off to take my own advice having woken up with a bit of a sore throat ie first sign

Garlic.
I roast garlic (with olive oil drizzled over it) in the oven. Delicious spread on bread... I swear it helps, though it may just be my excuse to eat a lot of garlic.
At the very least it keeps others at a sufficient distance that they don't catch the cold :D!
Soup too, but most importantly rest; even if you can't stay home get extra sleep.
Hope you feel better.

peppermint dissolved in bourbon. My dad's cure for everything.
I think they used the same thing when I was teething. And had a sore throat. And an upset stomach.
If it doesn't actually work, at least you have a bit of a buzz and you don't care. The peppermint will also cover the smell of alcohol on your breath.

ColdFX (and flonase so I don't get a sinus infection). My colds never last more than 3-4 days.

Nyquil. Is God's gift to the sick. I always have it in the house.
And lots of Vaseline around my nose.
You can avoid the need for this by using Puffs facial tissue. :o

Apparently I have a tender nose:cool:  I've tried every tissue with and without lotion, and my most looks like Rudolph 2 days into a cold no matter what....

And if you're prone to sinus infections, irrigate. Neti pot, or if you MUST throw stuff onto the landfills, there are disposable options now. Deal with having to look at what comes out of there... better down the sink in front of your eyes, than festering in your sinuses.

Thanks to everyone for all of your suggestions. I survived my week from . . . at work with my cold. I ended up using Zicam, and it seemed to push it through quickly.
Cold-FX, Garlic, SleepyTime Tea (I stay away from green due to the caffeine), echinacea, warm socks, wooly hat, and some fresh air.
Also, you have to remember to always drink lots of water. That'll always help.
Sorry you're sick :( Hope you feel better soon.

Guess I caught your cold... d**n these computer viruses!
which made me remember another way to get my raw garlic: thinly sliced, in miso soup. One large clove, a tablespoon or two of your favorite miso, a sprinkle of dried wakame in a 12-oz mug of hot water.
