Should I exercise or stay in bed?

I've been feeling under the weather for several days. I have a low grade fever and slight body aches and a headache. I usually feel better in the evenings and think that I must be over this. But again, I'm up this morning feeling yucky again.

I really wanted to go over and do hill repeats on Mt. Tabor, but I'm wondering if I should just go back to bed.

OK, I figure I know what the answer is.....but let me hear from you all anyway. :o

Go back to bed and let your body heal! A day or so off to get better is better than going out, wearing yourself out and making the illness worse. We can't be having that as we aren't quite to our goal yet!

Get well soon!

Hey Tater! How's the riding going? I hit 5000 last week and I'm hungry for more. I haven't been on the bike since Saturday and even that ride was so pathetic, I should have known that I was not well.

I've even wondered if this is overtraining. :( OK, thanks for the encouragement. I'll stay inside.

Just ask yourself 'What would Elvis do?"
Elvis would stay in bed.

I actually think I would ride, but I *would not* do hill repeats. I'd go for a slow "walking effort" ride, just to get the blood flowing. But 9/10 times, exercise makes me feel better, and I'll get well faster.

Just my 2 cents.

Either way, feel better soon!!

I second CA's advice! By all means don't go all out...just get your blood circulating, get some fresh air, and spin the legs a bit!!!

Not sure if it is the gettin' out that make me start feeling better or I am already startin' to feel better so I can go out...

regardless...your pedaling which is good for the mind, body & soul!! Just don't over-do it!!!

Are ya preggers?

Oh, Good Lordy! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But after a summer of swimming in swamps and running through forests and fields, there's no telling what kind of other nasty crap I may have been exposed to.

Well, It's been raining all day so I've stayed inside. If I'm not feeling any better tomorrow, I'll go see the doctor when I get back to home A

Silver, sorry you're feeling poorly. When I have a fever, I stay put. I figure my body is telling me that it's fighting and probably tired, so I don't add to its stress. But that's just me.

Whatever you do, take it easy. I would just take a walk and stay off the bike if I needed some fresh air. Certainly, don't do hill repeats on Mount Tabor.

Just a little note, research has shown that it is actually NOT good for us to exercise when we are sick. The body is already working overtime to fight off infection (whether it be viral or bacterial) and to add the extra tax on the circulatory, respiratory, and immune system when it is already taxed can prolong illness. I have read this on webmd and on another site that I won't mention because I can't remember the address right now  Memory is a fickle, fickle thing.
I think you should REST and RECOVER.
I think the hardest part of training is knowing when to stay home and stay put and then making myself do just that.
Whether it is overtraining or something viral, the answer is the same.
Chick flick, pjs, soup, rest.

Good luck. Sorry you feel crummy!

I knew a lady who died of a virus, age 42. If you are sick, don't exercise.

This lady knew she had a virus infection of some kind. But she was a runner. She was very thin like Silver, with hardly any body fat. She kept running. On day three of the illness, while running, she collapsed and an ambulance was called to take her to the hospital. She went into a coma and died a few days later. The diagnosis was she had a virus and because she was so thin, her body didn't have the reserves to fight off the infection.

I mention this story because people don't think a virus can kill them. Yes it can. It isn't about being old or young or in ill health, and so those groups of people are the only groups in danger with respect to the viral infections. It is about being smart and sensible and recognizing that the body has limitations because any age group can die if one is not smart and sensible.

And don't forget to get your annual flu shot.

+1 to what everybody else said.

But one other thing. When I have nonspecific symptoms like that, low fever, nausea, diarrhea, body aches, nine times out of ten it's primary dehydration.

I'm well aware I get dehydrated much easier than "normal" people.

But whether it's primary or secondary, dehydration can both produce *and* result from those symptoms.

So... slam that gatorade, or whatever your preferred hydration solution. Have a liter right this very second, just on account-a. Now have another. And a third before you go to bed. See if you don't feel better in the morning.

Yep, you know. Frustrating tho' it may be, better to rest and recover than overdo it and pay the price for however long it takes for your body to heal.

So..... what did you end up doing? And how are you feeling?

thanks all for your well wishes and advise.

yesterday, I did nothing....NOTHING. I padded around here in my underwear. surfed the net and rea a book. I napped and called a bike shop about getting ceramic bearings put in my new wheels. sooo I guess i did a few things but no exertion. OH, and I have been drinking alot.

I feel a little better this morning. I'm going to take it easy...I haven't decided yet whether to drive back to home A yet.
