Hey, you all. Bruno28 will be visiting Seattle the weekend of Oct. 19-21. We would like to get a TE gang together to go out to dinner as part of her weekend her, preferably Saturday night. Who can and would like to come?

I was thinking someplace like Carmelita's but am happy to hear other ideas.

Hi :D I don't know Bruno28 but would love to meet everyone, if I can.

On saturdays, I work until 8pm but if you all are finished dinner and are lingering over desserts or drinks, I would love to stop by to say hi.

Teigyr, we can have a late dinner, you know--like 8:30/9:00. Do I have it right that you work at...the airport, maybe?

PS You always, in your spare time, do a search for posts by Bruno 28. She's really funny. That's how she and I struck up an email friendship, really---I thought she had such a sharp wit.

Yay Mimi!

SKnot is fine. He'll learn something about people from other countries.
it will be good for him. I could bring Raleighdon to entertain him?

Naw, Mimi, then let's make sure we have it at a "dinner" time for most of us.

teigyr
09-15-2007, 06:16 PM
Definitely make it dinner time, I am the minority but thanks :D

Maybe if it's leisurely enough, I can catch the tail end of it.

I am at the airport! But by that time of night, especially on a saturday, there is no traffic.

mimitabby
09-15-2007, 06:29 PM
we'll definitely take our time. hopefully we can find a place that is not as noisy as the brewery.

salsabike
09-15-2007, 06:36 PM
We can definitely find a quieter place! Do you know Carmelita's? It's a vegetarian restaurant in Greenwood that is just absolutely gourmet-level in its food. It is downright delicious and artful food, and healthy to boot. And not insanely expensive.

teigyr
09-15-2007, 06:44 PM
We live kind of near Greenwood too - we're in North Seattle on Greenwood and 115th :D

Do you know Carmelita's? It's a vegetarian restaurant

You're going to make a Scottish person eat vegetarian food??? Would that be deep fried?

Hello everybody - looking forward to meeting you all. I'm just back from a week's holiday in Ireland. They don't do vegetarian either:D Life is just one long round of holidays for me at the moment. I'm trying to re-focus my work/life balance after a particularly crap year. I may be going too far the other way:)

I'll be delighted to meet anyone who can come for diner and am happy to play the role of resident expert on Scottish culture for those of you with keen interest in the motherland (but be aware that I'll probably be making most of it up).

I'm sure the vegetarian food will be wonderful:cool: Do they do vegetarian haggis? Something of a contradiction in terms but delicious none the less.

http://www.macsween.co.uk/haggis/content.asp?Cat=3&PageID=20

For any haggis aficionados - and I'm sure there are many of you out there- Macsween's is the best.

I'm really fine with veggie food. I can always pick up a hamburger on the way home.....

Hey there. Kitsune and I will be there. We need a decent, bike friendly hotel in the area though. Any suggestions?
We'd also love to do a ride that weekend if anyone is up for it. We'll use it as a small vacation.

wahine - we'd love to see you again. come on along.

when we go to races we usually avoid the issue by not asking.... we just take the bikes in - hey they are luggage to us. So far no one has had any problems with it. If its the host hotel we can even take them in past the front desk.....

I'll have to check my calendar, but this sounds like a fun event to try to make!

If I have enough AK miles to fly down, I'll try to make it. Sounds like its going to be a blast and I've never been down to Seattle, well except to fly though.

What are hotel rates like during that time?

Chick, would love to have you too! Not sure what the hotel rates are but they must be off-season by then. And the season may be too, so to speak, so just in case anyone wants a ride alternative if the weather is really awful--Ummelina's Spa downtown is SO nice. Quiet, warm, facials, massages, etc. Hmm. Makes me want to take tomorrow off and go do the Ummelina's aromatherapy bath.

I wanna come!! How far is it to Seattle from here? It's 5 hours to Spokane... And 5 hours to Vancouver. Maybe 8 hours? That's a long way for one day I guess.... :(

Eden
09-17-2007, 04:31 PM
Mapquest says 5 1/2 hours from Kelowna to Seattle (and it is usually suprisingly accurate, but on the map it looks a bit optomistic), but that does not include the border crossing....

kelownagirl
09-17-2007, 05:48 PM
I wonder what route they took? I can't see how to get there without going thru Vancouver or Spokane.

I think that this link should work. It looks like it goes most of the way towards Vancouver, but turns south a bit short of it. You would definitely have to not run into any traffic at all to get that time.....

I'd bet it would be a very scenic drive, though a pretty long one to go down rt 97, then over rt 2

So all chip butty and related wisecracking aside, Bruno would like dinner not to be vegetarian because she has Crohn's. I will welcome any and all ideas. I am not volunteering to make dinner myself because I'll be sightseeing with her that day AND because I am far from being a Martha S. type. And I want to have fun rather than worry about dinner, which I would do. So, other possibilities:

Potluck at our house, but too hard for the out of towners; don't want them to worry either.

Take out at our house, which could work fine. We have the Black Pearl nearby, which is a great and inexpensive Chinese restaurant, so could do take out from there. Or from Whole Foods, which has good good stuff.

Seafood restaurant would be great but not sure I know any that are inexpensive enough to ensure that no one feels financially squished.

Other thoughts?

kelownagirl

We have restaurants here that have private rooms for large groups, no extra charge. Is there anyplace like that?

How many people are you expecting at this point?

Ivars? (the one near Recycled Cycles)
RedHook? (the one near the Samammish bike trail)
Hales Ales? (the one near the Burke Gilman bike trail)

Order in/potluck could be very groovy. Chinese food is cool with me, as is anything from Whole Foods. Also I could certainly bring a little something, too.

We'll go with whatever y'all come up with for dinner. Just let us know.

So, is there gonna be a bike ride sometime that weekend or what? We really want to get out and see some stuff by bike while there. It will also determine if we try to come up there on Friday night or Saturday morning.

Kit and I also need to get a room up there so we need some advice on a general area/side of Seattle to narrow it down to. We don't want to drive all over the place and take a bigger chance of getting lost. I'm very directionally challenged. :o

Knot - we want to visit Recycled Cycles while there. We really liked that place. Need help finding it though.

salsabike
09-22-2007, 10:45 PM
I too am directionally challenged, so you have my total sympathy.

One possibility for a hotel is the Silver Cloud Inn in the University District. It's right near the Burke Gilman trail (which, going south, will get you to Knot's favorite LBS, Recycled Cycles, and going north to the brewery and Marymoor Park, the ride that Kit has been on).
http://www.scinns.com/09home.htm

Will be sightseeing with Bruno so not riding, but some of the rest of you guys may want to respond to X re a ride.

Dh and I usually go away for a weekend every term. We are thinking about heaving to Seattle that weekend because we've never been (together), and it means I'd be able to meet a few TE'ers on Saturday night. (how you do feel about having a man (along with Sknot) at our dinner? Let me know if that's a bad idea. I think Mimi's dh would come if mine was there.) Fall can be a really busy time at school for us so we usually go somewhere only an hour or two away - I might not commit to coming until we are really close to the date and can judge how much work we have at the time. (On a positive note, we have a Pro-D on the Frdiay and could do our work day from 7-12 and get away early.) If we DO come, we'll most likely bring our bikes whether we ride with TE'ers or on our own. We'd come in late friday night, ride and/or tour Seattle on Saturday, dinner on Saturday night, home on Sunday.

What's the Burke Gilman Trail - is it paved? (In other words, do we bring road bikes or MT bikes?) Are there any good paved trails in the area? Anything along the ocean?

PS Both my Grandfathers were born in Scotland but I can only say "Tis a brae bricht moonlicht nicht."

Bruno - I e-mailed you *yesterday* to make Garlic soup and even gave you the secret recipe. I also advised that perhaps more alcohol in the bedtime toddy would be helpful.
Did you do either of these things???

KnottedYet
09-23-2007, 08:26 AM
Hot toddies are the best bedtime cure for what ails you! (well, umm, some things are better, but this is a family forum) Shot of whisky, big blob of honey, mixed into a mug of piping hot water. Sleepy Knot.

KG - another member of the XY population would probably be just peachy for SKnot. He'll probably bring his computer along and entertain himself. Mr. Salsa will be there, too, won't he?

The Burke Gilman trail is paved. We have lots of paved miles in the city. The BG runs along Lake Washington, then joins the Samammish River Trail (which runs along the Samammish River). Heading toward the ocean from the BG takes a little finessse with a map as the trail ends and you need to do some road riding until you get to the beach.

Anybody planning to come to Seattle with bikes: order a (FREE) city of Seattle biking map. www.seattle.gov Seattle Department of Transportation does a great job with these maps.

I've had a thought - what about Italian food? Everybody likes Italian food (don't they???). It's cheap and cheerful (at least it is over here due to our large Italian population) and I bet mimi knows some good places.

So after much noodling about with Bruno and a little with Mimi, here’s what we’d like to do: Have our Bruno visit-TE dinner on Saturday October 20 with all of you at our house. Here’s why:

1. We won’t have to get into a sweat about getting set numbers and reservations. So that means come one, come all. Sknot, Raleighdon, KG’s spouse, etc. Yup, Chris will of course also be there.

2. Y’all will get to see the scene of the contractor/remodel crime. Even the basement dungeon from which I posted to you guys last winter while in the Slough of Air-Compressor Despair.

3. We have rocks and minerals all over the house from rock hunting trips we’ve done (and a rock shop in the garage—rock saw, sander, polisher, rocks we found but haven’t cut yet). We have a weaving studio with two threaded looms to look at and play with (and embarrassingly vast quantities of yarn). We have, of course, bikes, for those who need a fix. Stuff to look at, stuff to play with. We’re pretty casual and laidback. It's an easy house to be at and we'd really like to have you come by.

4. Our house is close to I-5 and really easy to find.

5. Just think of the pictures we'll be able to post on TE the next day.

So...will this work for you guys? We propose that we provide all kinds of really good take-out from Whole Foods; maybe some good Chinese food from the Black Pearl...and that you just bring whatever you like to drink.

More details (time, PMs with directions) as we get closer...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO dish washing. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sign-up.

I want to make this easy. So I thought Chris and I would just buy a whole lotta good food. If people want to bring things, they can, but they don't have to. If people want to toss $5 in a plate to help with food costs, they can, but they don't have to. We are happy to host this dinner for Ms. Bruno and you guys.

Um...we're REALLY casual. We believe in good sturdy paper plates. No worries. Just fun.

Is there anything Scottish that anyone has a burning desire for? (and no, Knot, that doesn't include Glenfiddich - I was thinking more cultural). Seriously Bruno, I don't know how hard it would be to get but I'd love enough fabric to make a long skirt (I don't sew, so I can't tell you how much would work, I can try to find out but it's kinda late) in the Cameron hunting tartan. I'd have to guess that this would be nearly impossible at this point. Maybe we can discuss it when you're here and you can help me find a supplier that would be able to send it to me. Eventually, after the strike that is.

I'm getting excited too!

Glenfiddich? Glenlivet is by far the superior single malt. Everytime a bottle of Glenlivet gets opened, an angel gets it wings.

I've got a little bag pipe music. Just a handful of songs, but it includes the all-important Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace.

As a side bar, where else but the US could the unofficial Scottish National Anthem be co-opted to sell a soap called Irish Spring? Irish pipes don't even have drones.

Some lessons in pronunciation might be good. Celtic history and mythology is a minor (read: cheap) hobby of mine. However I've given up trying to sort out some of the names. I can almost handle Irish and Scottish as long as I don't have to say them out loud. Manx and Welsh come out sounding like I have a condition.

At least I already know what to wear. Then again, when your screen name is Boy in a Kilt, it does create certain expectations. I'm sure if I don't show up in one, Knot will berate me something awful.

Glenfiddich? Glenlivet is by far the superior single malt. Everytime a bottle of Glenlivet gets opened, an angel gets it wings.

Some lessons in pronunciation might be good.

Did Salsa not mention everyone has to talk Scottish all night???? Now c'mon, don't let on I haven't given you enough coaching - we all remember talk Scottish day, right?:D Don't worry, there will be personal tuition.

It means to talk nonsense. It's what Scots do at great length when drunk.

It's also used to disparage the views of anyone you don't agree with. As in 'Awa 'n' stop haverin' (The final 'g' is normally silent in Scots). An alternative in this situation is 'awa 'n' bile yer heid'. (Trans -'go away and place your head in a pan of boiling water. That may bring you to your senses')

This is fun, isn't it:D :D :D

Funny, we call that Karaoke and unfortunately it's not illegal around these parts. Lost a lot of sleep my high school years due to it.(Why, oh, why did my parents have to do it 'til two in the morning on a school night and still expect me to do well in school?) It seems it's something the Scottish and Koreans have in common. Who woulda thunk?!! ;) :p

Flogging Molly is good trail running music. They are up there with Social Distortion as my favorite lower-key punk bands.

Dave King, the singer, is from Dublin. Originally came to the US as part of Fastway, which Wikipedia describes as "a late-80's/early 90's hard rock band." I remember Fastway having a couple of hits around 1983-ish. I still catch myself singing it from time to time.

I'm sure wearing a T-shirt from an Irish punk band won't seem too odd. Let's ponder the all the cultural cross-threading going on here. Scottish woman in Seattle, hanging out (and presumably drinking) with a bunch of Yanks. At least one yahoo of undetermined heritage running around in a kilt made in the US, either tartan or an Olive Utilikilt. Also, there will be at least one person there born in Asia (unless I end up going alone).

Oh, and the common denominator is we all ride bikes. The first bike with cranks was invented by the French.

I'm sure I'm missing something, but that's a good start.

Sounds like a party to me.

Here is my contribution to the evening.

If I post it now you will **all** have time to practice the words
to the tune of A Scottish Soldier (you can find it on the internet or YouTube)

One...two... three...and...

There was a cyclist, a Scotttish cyclist
Who cycled far away, and rode so far away
There was none bolder, nor heart-of-gold-er
Than Bruno 28 of Falkirk town
She's seen the flowers, at sunset hours
She's seen the cows a-graze thro' Scottish haze
And now she's flying, her heart is sighing
To meet the girls of Team Estrogen

[chorus] And they're TE girls, they're the greatest girls
Not just cycling girls, they're all-rounder girls
Forever these girls will be TE girls
One for all and all for one

There were some cyclists, Seattle cyclists
Who cycled far and wide, they rode so far and wide
There were none bolder, nor heart-of-gold-er
They rode on all the routes and cycled all the tracks
They've seen the grizzly, in weather drizzly (??!!)
They've seen the ducks in lines, above the pines
And now they're eating, and no doubt drinking
And Bruno 28 is there with them

[chorus] And they're TE girls...

Wish I was there to see if I could drink Bruno under the table.
You Americans haven't a chance! You need an ozzie or a kiwi to have a hope of out-drinking a Scot!

Bruno, it was indeed Kit's and my honor to meet you. You are even funnier and warmer in person than you are on the forum, which is saying a lot. Thank you for coming to Seattle to visit. We look forward to seeing you again someday, maybe in your country next time. :) (((Bruno)))

We had a great time and enjoyed meeting everyone. Thank you so much Salsa and Mr Salsa for having us all over. You two are incredibly kind (read: mentally ill) to allow such a group of miscreants in your wonderful home. :D

*ahem* I have no idea what you are talking about with the Drambuie. I was a good girl. :p

Here's some pics from last night. Enjoy... :)

KG - you'll have to ask Wahine and Knot about that...and be forewarned: they'll claim a professional and therapeutic interest only ;)

And Bruno/Wahine - I have a funny feeling it'll be a long time before I can hear any references to the English, without picturing your patented 'turning of the head while cursing and spitting' reaction!

Glad that you travelin' types got home safely too.

Thank you Salsa for a great evening. Your house looks incredible! We had a great time. I still can't believe you can weave with steel but it was very soft, as steel goes.

It was incredible meeting everyone. I could not have asked for a better group of people to hang out with. I look forward to seeing you all (and others) again.

So here's a little cut and paste from elsewhere...

I had a blast. I made it home, but not without dropping some more bucks at a Lulu Lemon store in Portland. When I got home I gave DH the kilt I bought for him, very nice if I do say so myself.

Thanks to everyone!!

It was really fun.

Bruno - you are a gem and I'll never be able to say a certain word without expectorating again, thanks to you!!

X and Kit - You're too much. Thank you.

Knott - I would've rolled you out right then and there on the wet boardwalk, manipped that sucker and bin done with it...

Teigyr - You will be hearing from me. Your SO is a lovely man and I can't wait to see your pole sometime!!

SGTiger and BnK - It was great to meet you, I think I got more of a chance to chat with BnK more, (you're right, we are a little off), but man that was a hell of a good chocolate martini!!

Dex - You're fabulous, love the hair, love the socks, love the attitude. I hope we see each other again.

Salsa and Mr. - What wonderful, sweet and warm people you are. Your house is lovely and warm, a perfect reflection of it's inhabitants. And I love your craft room and Ginko fossils.

MM_QFC and Linda - What a wonderful pair. I truly enjoyed chatting with both of you.

Eden - You're adorable. It was very nice to meet you and the scones were excellent.

Mimi and RD - we'll make up for it all later. It was nice to meet you even if we didn't get a chance to really chat.

As for feeling up X - I won't deny it, it was completely innocent, well as innocent as I can be after all that alcohol.

And Teigyr and Knot....Hmmmmmmmmm road trip. I have 2 guest rooms and lots of great riding.

I really loved the expectorations. In the end, I think I cleared my sinuses a little with a good *nnnngggggkkkkkkk* *cccccchhhhhhhhhhh!!!* but only a mock *ptui* after... y'know... the English. F*ckin' Engl*sh.

As far as the Xident went, I looked over (beside me!) and just see X's kilt up by her knee and two PTs all glittery-eyed feelin' up her leg. What's a woman to do? Oh, yeah, I sipped my Drambuie and went back to discussing the finer points of politics with our Scottish Ambassador.

I have this theory about brain cells.

There are good brain cells that want to study, work and generally act right. Then there are the "bad" brain cells that want to drink, party and spend your kids' college money on bike parts.

Bad brain cells are created when good brain cells go bad.

When the booze hits the brain, the bad cells push, browbeat and generally punk the good ones into having "just a little drink."

In the bike shop, the bad cells are the ones saying "They are phil wood hubs, that's ONLY two or three college text books..."

Well, I've already been to college so I don't need to study anymore.

I've drank with representatives of several of Her Majesty's former colonies. It'd be a hard call. Bruno did put a serious hurting on that bottle of drambuie. She also drug me into that particular folly by insisting, nay demanding, that I partake also. Twenty-two ounce bottle of stout in my hand notwithstanding.

But, an interesting correlation. Of the 4 kilted members of the party, who left with their sobriety intact?

Should I also mention that my family ran moonshine only two generations ago?

c

boy in a kilt

I don't know. Claiming refugee status is one thing, getting it is another. Particularly if one happens to be a US military officer who is wanted for desertion. There is no statute of limitations on desertion.

boy in a kilt
11-10-2007, 07:47 AM
I'm not sure if Canada is extraditing deserters or not. A couple of years ago, there was a kid who'd headed for Canada after deserting. Don't remember if he returned of his own accord or was returned by Canadian Authorities.

However, it would also mean I could never return to the US for any reason other than turning myself in. Once I did that, I would be convicted of a federal offense which means I'd never be able to vote, hold office, own a weapon or get a professional license.

Also, I would spend the rest of my life dealing with the fact that I was too chickensh** to honor my commitment to the US Government and my soldiers. My opinions on our reason for being wherever we end up are irrelevant. I still have a duty to my soldiers to bring as many of them as I can home alive.

None taken. One of those conversations that went one way, then the other.

I knew it was all in jest as well, and was just going along to the fun of it. (However, I would support a deserter if they came here.)

Given my previous adventures in Canada, liver damage is definitely possible. Particularly if I ever find the pub in Victoria that I used to frequent when my ship was there. Good stout.

Or, Iceland. Do they have stout in Iceland? Can I get studded bike tires in Iceland?

Hey, did you happen to be in a pub at the Esquimalt base on June 24,1993? I had the most fun with a bunch 'o French sailors celebrating the Fete Nationale that night...

Sorry, no. I've put back a few at that particular establishment, but I'd been out of the Navy for about nine months by then.

Now that I think about it, the last time I was in Canada was August 1992.

However, there is a pretty good chance that I was at a bar somewhere in the Portland area.
