View Full Version : I'm shrinking?!?!?!?

Just had my yearly physical today and my height was measured (twice!) as 5'1-1/2". I've always measured 5'2-1/2" my entire adult life. I'm kinda freaked about this - could I have lost an inch of height in a year? I'm 46, not quite old enough to be shrinking so fast (not menopausal, either).
My doc said not to worry about it, that the measuring devices up against a wall have a certain amount of "play" in them, but I'm not so sure.
Anyone else had this happen?
Thanks!

No, but I did find out I am almost an inch taller when I went to see the ladypart doctor.
I've always been about 5'3". She had me 5'3 and 3/4 in my sock feet.
I like their scales!

Hey, that makes me think....I believe in the past I've always been measured on a standard "doctor's scale" that has the height measurement coming up from the scale in back. This time, the doc's office had upgraded to a fancy new separate digital scale, and had the measuring device separately, on the wall. I wonder if the doctor's scale measuring devices have been overestimating my height for years? It's possible....at least if that's the case, I'm not actively shrinking! :D One can hope....

I spent many years thinking I was 5'3" but SadieKate set me straight on that one. I'm only about 5' 2.25". ;)
My durn feet keep getting bigger. I recently came to the realization that my Sidi Genius 5s that are only 1.5 years old are just too small now. This didn't make me happy considering how much those things cost. But really, 5" 2.25" and a size 41? As an adult I've gone from a size 6.5 to an 8.5+. I have to buy wide women's shoes, too. By the time I return to the earth I'll probably be 5'0" and have a size 10 foot. Won't that look Hobbit-like.

Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
To live
They got little hands
And little eyes
And they walk around
Tellin' great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet
Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Round here
Short People are just the same
As you and I
(A Fool Such As I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(It's A Wonderful World)
Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
To love
They got little baby legs
And they stand so low
You got to pick 'em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time
Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
'Round here
(sorry. could NOT resist.)
:D
and even though I am large, I am getting shorter. I think it is inevitable.

I chalk it all up to bad posture.
I've had patients "gain" up to 2 inches when I corrected their posture.

I have achieved both of these things: shorter in height and wider in foot. Grace in every movement, charm in every pose. OK, maybe not that part.

Well, I've lost 1/2 an inch, I've always said I was 5'6" . When I went in for my bone density test, I measured 5' 5.5".
Unlike yellow, my feet seem to be smaller too - my new Teva's are size 6 1/2, my old ones are size 7.

Just a thought
Our bones compact as the day goes on, so your height is shorter by the end of the day... dunno if it is an inch different though...

*leans over and slaps MP* :p
Don't worry about it yellow - I'm 5'3" (not letting SK measure me any time soon ;)) and (would) wear a 41 in Sidis (if I could spare that much cash  ). Do wish I could have the normal person height to go with the normal person sized feet...

When I was fitted for my bike last year, found out I was 1/4" taller than I thought. I specifically asked to see if I was shrinking. I'm of that age.
But my feet are getting bigger. Bummer.

Unfortunately, my measurement was taken at 9 am! So, I may be even shorter at night! :D
As for posture, I had the nurse take my height again after the first time was so low, and I made a good effort to stand as straight as possible. I've never been told I have bad posture, and I don't slouch or have a humped back or anything, and unfortunately, the measurement was exactly the same.... :(

And now I have Randy Newman singing in my head in addition to having to shop for wider shoes.

On the shoe thing: don't have kids. I went up a full size with the kid. And since I started at a 10, and am now a solid 11, I can't possibly have any more kids or risk only being able to shop at the drag queen stores (not that there's anything wrong with that, and at least I'm in the right city for it).

I tried Chacos - the inside soles hurt my feet. Croc's hurt too. Tevas are lovely for me. :)

Crocs hurt???? What part????? They're not supposed to contact any part of the top of your foot while you're standing - they support like nobody's business (better than custom orthotics).
They hurt your eyes, for sure... but I got used to them :D

Oooh, I just love crocs! My feet are too narrow for anything but the Mary Janes, but I love 'em. I bought the aqua ones for summer and wear them a lot, especially on the sailboat. Great when your feet might get wet. I guess I need a fall/winter pair in a darker color now! :D
They're ugly, yet somehow cute. My mom saw a photo of me in them and instantly loved them, so I know what I am getting her for her fall b-day!

Before I believed that I shrunk, I would try to find another old fashioned doctors scale with the measureing device built in. Does you gym perhaps have one? My guess is the doctor's office mismounted the new device on the wall, but I guess you could always ask them to check it.
You could also check it at home by marking off your height on a wall, and then very carefully measuring it.

Yes, I am going to measure myself in the gym - there are doctor's scales there, and I think they might have the measuring part included (I hope). I did have my DH measure me with a measuring tape against the wall, and it came up 5'1-3/4", but how accurate it was, I don't know. With baseboards and having to have a book on my head, there is room for error there too.
Thanks,
Emily

I'm a size 12. Was size 11 already in high school, and yes, though I'm now getting shorter, my feet have grown. You're gonna have to clue me in on where to find these drag queen stores, except they may have way more fashionable shoes than my tastes run to, having grown up using clogs with dresses and trainers with pants. I remember getting one of those handwoven, artsy-folksy ankle-length Guatemalen skirts that I wore with a ditto gauzy blouse and silver jewelry because that was the only way I could look dressed up with clogs. I did like the outfit, though, so it didn't make me bitter and frustrated. Never really missed wearing spiky heals and pointy toes; never felt the need to suffer for fashion. Only real problem was finding shoes once in Zagreb when my luggage didn't arrive for 3 days. Women there just aren't my size! :o Luckily a colleague there knew where the drag queen store was (or at least, the store called "Big" -- which I wouldn't have known since it was in Croatian) and I found the comfiest pair of heels I've ever owned. Still wear them when I have to dress up that much, though even they didn't feel all that great after 3 straight days.

Finally got to the gym today and measured my height (to the best of my ability) on the doctor's scale in the locker room. I first set it for my old (all my adult life) height of 5'2.5", and there was lots of air between my head and the measuring arm. Bumped it down to 5'1.5", like at the doc's office, and I fit perfectly under that.
SIGH.... :( I hate to think where I'll end up if I've already lost an inch in my 40s!
