The road less Traveled....

when I started out this morning, I thought I was going to the Lytle Creek Firing range. When I got to the 15 Freeway and Sierra , I noticed that the road to Glen Helen park was open;

felt good, so I climbed through Devore, and ran across this sign:

66 is "decommissioned" here. I-15 runs right along side it up through the Cajon Pass, as a matter of fact, they closed one set of lanes:

eventually, I got to where 66 ends. The pass gets narrow enough that 15 runs over where 66 used to be:

So I turned around started back home. I was wondered why I was climbing so easy. I had a nasty headwind coming down the pass

What an interesting ride FW. Loved the pics and the old Route 66. I saved a few for my desktop- hope you don't mind. I don't get the California hills in Ga.:) Jenn

Beautiful pix. Years ago, my brother and I used to ride Route 66 between Pasadena and Pomona. That was when we were young and didn't know anything about bike fit, training, hydration, elevation or anything else. Even the heat didn't bother us in the "good old days". The smog was worse then and that did bother me.

Hey Fredwina, I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and I really think there is less smog now than there was years ago. The smog used to be so bad that when my brother and I rode, we used to call smoggy days "white days". You are probably not old enogh to remember, but they used to light smudge pots all through the San Gabriel and Pomona Valley areas to warm the orange groves and the sky would turn black!! Now here are no more orange groves and the emissions controls have helped. I wish I lived out closer to where you are and could ride Route 66 now. Happy ridiinig!!

I'm not sure if am that old(46 right now), Plus, I actually grew up in Jackson, MO:) I do get teased about my "Arkansas Spanish" a lot. Got into trouble today for butchering Cajon:o

Cool pix--thanks for sharing. I lived in San Diego about 30 years ago, and I remember that nasty smog, too--and we didn't even get the worst of it.
