Bike rack that is :)

C'mon, whatcha think I meant?

Gotta favorite bike rack? ;) Artistic? Handy? Funky? Nice view of the Thames? Show us your favorite place to park your trusty steed.

This one a nice design is in Seattle.

Jacket, actually. From Shebeest several years ago. We have a staff member who is a HUGE leopard fan. Apparently, she has a leopard spotted derailleur. I kid you not.

Both are cool racks! The top one is a really cool design. And how neat to have a place to park your bikes inside. You KNOW you work for a cool company when parking is indoors.

We hardly have any bike racks around here- so I can't take pictures. It's the reason I don't ride to the grocery store or to run errands- there's truly no place to lock my bike up securely. Too bad. :(
I think I need to move someplace like the PNW.... ;)

I think I need to move someplace like the PNW.... ;)
My thought exactly! The only bike racks around here are at the libraries and on campus--oh, and at the YMCA. Nothing cool like the pix posted above.

I really would move to the PNW if money were no object, and I didn't need a job, and I could get the Chief to leave the southeast, and my dog was OK with it, and.......well, you get the idea.

I agree...and we are working on it! Truly.

We also have no bike racks to speak of...certainly no cool ones. I asked about getting one at work and you wanna know the reason why they didn't bother? Apparently, when they asked the cyclists who worked here where they'd most like the rack to be located, all of them said "rack? I'd never leave my bike on a rack!". That's right...cycling here is appararently an opportunity to show off your income...and in so doing, no one wants to leave their bikes out of their sight. How's that for a twist? :p
Everyone rides, but we have no bike racks.

In climbing we call our collection of gear one's 'rack'. Obviously, many dirty jokes and innuendos are said.

Hee hee, and you notice how Susan's the 2nd post? Imagine Susan thought bubble here:

"what's she doing now? Oh, ok, bike racks, whew ..... walks to parking area, snaps photo. That's ok. Here" :p

Susan, which bike's Kits?

Eden

we also have nifty converted parking meters to use as bike racks now. Looks like Seattle and Berkely have both done this - when the parking was switched over from individual meters to kiosks, some of the old meters were converted to bike racks by taking off the meter heads and attaching a place to put your lock through securely. Berkely put big half circles on theirs. Seattle attached a big cut out bike emblem. http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/images/bikes_circlerack2.jpg

Of course I think the rail racks (a rack that is basically just a railing about 54" long) that are all around the city are the most elegant solution. They park bikes parallel to the street so they take up little space even when occupied and are almost unnoticable when not occupied.

Wow! Between trips my climbing gear always lived on a sling shoved into a pack.

My work has agreed to put in a bike rack, but we don't yet know when and they're still trying to decided exactly where. We've got several parking spaces that are less than full size due to light posts so I favor the one of these that's right behind the parking attendant's shack. I'd still prefer it to be out of the weather but that's not going to happen.

Kimmyt

Hah. Yeah, that pic was taken in the winter. We've been better about sorting and re-hanging gear recently, but usually it just lives in a pile on the floor or in the pack in the back of our car... but thats really 2 racks up there, The Boy's and Mine, so we rarely use more than 1/2 of that when we're out.

Kid's don't get special hanging devices. Of course, what kid wants to mess around with taking a bike on and off a hanging device? Especially one that weighs a lot more than ours!

And thus ends our aresenal of cycling devices.

I'm trying to find out how to get a couple of those parking-meter-turned-bike-rack critters put in the old parking meter sockets in front of our clinic. Right now patients are bringing bikes in and parking them in our staff lunchroom or locking them to the stair railing (eek!)

Gotta be diplomatic and approach the owner of the building space we rent in a nice way, and make it sound like it *must* be his idea to put the racks in, really... cuz the city of Seattle won't put them in unless the building owner fronting the city sidewalk ok's the deal.

I think they are awesome lock-ups, and even when bikes aren't locked to them they increase bike conciousness in the general public.

After an unfortunate incident with my blind dog getting in the garage and knocking over our bikes, we need to stop leaning them against the wall. I was worried about 1. the poor dog 2. my bike 3. my car that the bike fell in to. I think I have my priorities straight.

I've actually thought about making and selling them. Assembly required or assembled for a small fee. I am waiting to see if my client load (I am a Social Worker) increases in the next month. If it doesn't, I will hit the streets :)
I could really go for the green effect and strap an assembled one to my back and ride to the nearest city - 25 miles away:eek:

What would you guess that one of these would sell for retail? I think there is about $20 in materials and an hour or two of labor.

Tuckervill
09-10-2007, 04:22 PM
I'd pay $50 if I saw one at a craft fair or something. It would have to hold 4 bikes, though. If it held 6, I might pay $75 or less if it held less.

That's something I would see and think to myself "hmmm, I could build that myself for $20, or I could just skip the hassle and buy one!"

I was told a few weeks ago that my building would be getting bike racks, that it was only a matter of figuring out where to put them. Today my coworker heard from the building manager that they are only beginning to figure it all out. So, I sent the mgr an email suggesting the possibilities, starting with a storage room indoors, bike lockers, down to unprotected bike racks. I also acknowledge that space is a problem but suggested that they could use one of the spaces that are semi-obstructed by lightposts since they are undesirable spaces for cars, especially the one right behind the guard shack.

Does anyone have suggestions for how to handle the management so that they see the need and utility of bike racks?

mimitabby
09-14-2007, 07:50 PM
well. first of all, i have seen field of dreams.

now onto management and bike racks. What really did it for our management is that it is a "fire safety hazard" to have unsecured bikes in stairwells and hallways. (they might fall down and trip people!)
Once you say "safety hazard" they just go nuts. Depending on your company, the gov't gives them brownie points for bike commuting programs, so they WANT you to ride your bike.
and then it becomes more important to find a place to put the bike.
If your building has parking for cars, you might mention to Management that you can park 6 bikes in the area that one car takes up.... or... if 6 people are biking, look how much more room there is for their cars!

The hardest part for us was finding real estate in the bldg that someone didn't have dibs on! we finally found a few spots that were owned by Facilities, not some other org. and there were squatters filling the spaces. Any unused space will get taken over - By custodians, by forklift drivers (parking) and by that guy in your building who always has more stuff than he knows what to do with.

So we finally got all the squatters out, and the area was empty, ready for construction of the bike racks, and over night, someone came along and filled it with some stuff that needed to go into storage. But once you have facilities on your side, it gets easier.

And today, 4 bikes including mine were in our new bike rack.

My attempt to make a PVC pipe bike rack was not successful. Even with securing the joints with PVC adhesive, the bike was just too heavy and it would tip over. And then it broke apart while being moved. Note: i used a different design than flybye's. specifically, i used:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Bike-Rack/

.. it may have only been unsuccessful because my measurements were off (long story) and the legs weren't as long as they were meant to be..

yeh, i painted it. thank you.

i built the garage too.

for the bike rack i didnt do any measurements or anything, just started with old sprinkler parts and started piecing it together, holding the bike against the wall and figuring out rough dimensions. then i dry-fit it together, did some more cutting or replacing pieces that were cut down too much, then when i was happy i glued it all together. i used 3/4" PVC, 90-degree elbows and masonry screws (blue tapcons). oh and old pegboard hangers for the helmets.

Sheesh, the little joiny bits are expensive. Tidied the garage a bit so the bikes could just lean against the wall instead.

Well I have been just leaning the bikes, but we had an incident a few weeks ago. One of our schnauzers is blind and wandered in the garage while we were unloading the car after a trip. She knocked over DH's bike, got scared and ran straight into mine. Then she couldn't figure out what had happened, started to panic and was standing on my rear wheel and part of my drivetrain crying. Poor baby girl, she wasn't hurt and the bikes were ok but my car got scratched. The little dogs are quick and they do wander into the garage on occasion, so I want to find an economical method of storing the bikes and avoiding future dog/bike/car injuries (mainly dog and bike).

Pink- You are talented!! I do think I can make the same thing, maybe not as well. My walls are the drywall but I think I can use drywall anchors for stability?

PinkBike
09-20-2007, 07:26 AM
tiger, the helmet is a trek anthem. i added the reflective strips. i broke the restraining strap and emailed trek and they replied and gave me the part number to order a replacement, i thought that was very cool. i also have a giro atmos, but the anthem is so much better for the ponytail!!

diva, i cant picture what you're referring to. the couplings? theyre not necessary, i just had pieces of PVC laying around that already had elbows glued in, so i used those and then had to use the couplings to make it the right length. i wouldve preferred not to use the couplings but i am (a) cheap and (b) lazy. the elbows are 31 cents at home depot.

aggie, find a stud. on the wall, on the wall! sheeesh. i dont think anchors will be strong enough.
