I turned in my PhD dissertation today, so it is now truly official, I am a Doctor!
So, I would now like to formally introduce DrBadger (I will be changing my screen name also as I will no longer be living in PA as of next week :( )
But, OMG, I am no longer a student! Does this mean I have to join the real world and become.... gulp.... a grown up?!?!?! There is a reason we go to graduate school
Thank you all for the endless hours of procrastination provided by this forum, sometimes it is a wonder that I finished at all!

Woohoo!! Congratulations, DrBadger!
PhD in ...?
Whoops, sorry, Geophysics.
The title of the dissertation is: Stress triggering of earthquakes and subsidence in the Louisiana Coastal Zone due to hydrocarbon production.
I basically had two major projects. In the first I was looking at how earthquakes interact and whether one earthquake can trigger or suppress future earthquakes in the region. When we were unable to get funding to continue these projects I moved on to the second topic. In that part I did modeling to see if oil and gas production could explain the observed land loss and subsidence (land sinking) in southern Louisiana. Turns out that oil and gas production does have a significant impact on subsidence, but only locally, that is directly over the producing field, and thus, can't explain the entire regional subsidence and land loss signal. Also, my most recent modelling suggests that subsidence will continue over the oil and gas fields for at least 50 years (though slowing) after production ends due to the shales continuuing to compact.
Now after a bit of vacation combined with moving I am going to be starting a job with BP in Houston, TX.

Congrats, badger! Your thesis sounds really interesting, even though I'm not a geophysics nut. :) Congrats on your new job, too. There's no need to become a grown-up, you'd make the rest of us look bad! ;)

Ironic, Silver's sister did something similar for her Master's in Chemical Engineering at LSU!
Congrats on completing the PhD - DRBadger

Congratulations Dr. Badger!! And yes it is unfortunate but one must become an adult at some time. But as pointed out, a real paying job means that soon you can afford new TOYS!
And your dissertation sounds real interesting, especially since I work on coastal restoration projects in south Louisiana. PM me please when you can, I have questions... Man I wish you were going to work for Shell here in the Big Easy instead for BP over in Houston.

Maybe you can do a postdoc position and put off real adulthood for a little while longer. ;)
Congrats on your doctorate.

Congratulations!!!! :D
Speaking from experience, I know what a relief it is to turn in that PhD dissertation and be DONE with it!
(I'll also add that the title of this thread had me all a-flustered for a moment. My best friend's nick name is Badger, and she just graduated from medical school, so she's also Dr. Badger. Her housemates actually call her that.)
Congrats too on getting a job. It is very nice not living in grad student poverty anymore, especially with an expensive hobby like cycling. :)

Thanks all for the congratulations!
Well, my stuff is all gone... the movers came today and now the apartment looks very empty (and Amie no longer has a couch! the living room consists of a coffee table, a TV stand... minus the TV, and a little end table...not so great for entertaining :) ) 3 more days to wrap up things at school and then I am off on vacation for 3 weeks! Yippie!
OK, now back to my nap!

Great job getting your Post Hole Digger!
I'm still working my way through my BS in Geology (at nearly 40! ). I have done all of my upper division geology classes, including field camp. I'm finally going back and doing classes like Environmental Geology and gen eds like English and History.
The amount of time it takes me to get my BS will show up on the geologic time scale!
I have been working on a project mapping local faults and trying to find out if they have Quaternary movement. (Didn't find anything that looked recent). It's been fun because no one ever proposed that they were strike slip faults and couldn't figure out why they were high angle normal over here and then high angle reverse just over there. We found many nearly-horizontal slickensides, and a very interesting extremely low angle reverse fault, (a triangle zone?) I may have my map published before I'm done.
I'm not sure yet if I'll go to grad school, but I am getting prepared for it, taking my year of Chem, Calc and Physics each.
