Dh and I got on the tandem at about 6:45 a.m. for a 65 mile ride. When we stepped outside, it was already miserably hot. It was also very humid, which is unusual for So. Cal, yet it's been that way off and on this summer and especially so today.
We got in 67 miles for our longest training ride for the Amtrack century we're doing next Sat. We had to get those miles in and today was really the only day we had to do it, so no turning back. I'm amazed at how well we both did considering it was over 100 by the time we got back at 12:30. Weather.com said 102, but I heard people mentioning up to 108. We made sure we had plenty of fluids and used a sports bottle to constantly dowse ourselves with water, which we refilled three times. It's amazing how much pouring water on your head helps. (And soaking your jersey with it, and sports bra and shorts!)
We did a decent amount of climbing in there, too, about 3,500 ft, so I'm pretty confident we'll be alright for that century which should not be anywhere near 100 degrees and definitely less climbing.
Can't believe we did that on the hottest day of the summer. We're crazy, but it sure feels good to say I did it and didn't keel over in the process! :D
