44 yr old mom who began riding summer of 2006 when I realized I could burn more calories on bike than on treadmill and actually enjoy doing it! Took a 24 mile ride two days ago (first day of the dreaded monthly visitor) w/PI shorts and a maxi pad. HUGE MISTAKE - do not do this- it is painful the rest of that day and the next.

Found this website and read about others with saddle sores. Yippee - I'm not alone! Also read about Chamois Buttr- used it today (2 days later) for 24 miler and no pain at all. Not during the ride and not after. Many, many thanks for all the other biker chicks who freely give info to us novice riders! I'll keep reading as I keep encountering different issues.

BTW - Terry Butterfly seat on my roadbike.

Some folks like the Instead Cups or Diva Cups during the monthly visitation.

I too am a recent finder of the Butter of Chamois - what will they think of next?!

You might also like Body Glide, my other favourite personal lubricant. Eliminates Chub Rub right away!

+ a million!!! So many ouchy years of being hamburger "down there" all the time. Chamois Butt'r rocks!

Little tip: Get a 1/2 oz screwtop jar from The Container Store - or cut a contact lens case in half. Now you have a pocket-friendly container for extra Chamois Butt'r on the road when you have to pee and wipe the lube off.

I like to bring along 1-2 of the the handy dandy Chamois Butt'r refill packs TE sells. They are nice and small so fit in the rear shirt pocket nicely.

Unfortunately the CB refill packets are very similar in shape to gel packs so you have to be really careful to look before you bite the top off and guzzle...:D

You're allowed to say menstrual cycle and period if you want.
The dreaded monthly visitor at my house is the guy who reads the electric meter.

Where do you get these? Since I've gotten older, my period (thanks for the permission to use the word :D ) has gone from not so bad to "OMG -I might need a blood infusion" and a tampon just won't do the job. Which reminds me of those old Tampax commercials - NO, I can't go swimming or horseback riding on the 1st day or 2nd for that matter. I'm too busy hemorraging. Plus, I don't really care for either activity. I like to bike!!! Still loving the Chamois Butt'r, though.

If your local natural food store doesn't have Diva Cups, try Whole Foods or Wild Oats. Or you could order one from LunaPads (http://www.lunapads.com), who advertise in my favorite magazine, "*****."

That is... B*TCH.

Google Diva Cup. It is available online.

Good luck!

I'm definitely a fan of chamois cream. I'm kinda trying to find the perfect one though. Here's what I've tried:

1, Assos, which I thought was really messy and didn't last as long as I would like on hot rides. It's slightly mentholated, though, which I sort of liked. The packaging is prettier than Butt'r too, though jar packaging for chamois cream is a pain imo.

2. Body Glide. Lasts a very long time even when it's hot, and isn't messy at all. Smells a little like soap (it's unscented), in a nice way. Not messy at all, easy to apply to chamois. Biggest complaint is that I tend to go through it pretty quickly when I'm riding a lot, so even though the individual packages are less expensive than other lubes, I feel like may end up spending more...

3. Astroglide/KY Jelly. Tried this on recommendation of some folks here. I'm glad this works for some people, but it really, really didn't work for me at all. It just didn't seem to prevent friction adequately, and I think it didn't last very long at all. Maybe because it's water based (I think)?

4. Chamois Butt'r. I found this less messy and longer lasting than Assos, but not as long lasting as Body Glide.

Has anyone tried the Brave Soldier lube? I'm curious about it, but haven't ordered it yet because it comes in a very small package -- 3 or 4 ounces I think -- that costs about the same as a package of Assos or Butt'r with three or four times more product. Maybe you don't need as much? Maybe it's really, really good? I want to read reviews before I shell out.

Liza, I haven't tried Brave Soldier (yikes! what a name) - but in case you were planning to try Crotch Guard also, I didn't like that. It's an oil rather than a cream, and for me it would disappear really quickly, like within 10 miles.

I bought a big tube of chamois butter (took the helpful tip from this forum) at R.E.I for $14.00. What other stores carry it?

I bought my 1st pair of cycling shorts - the Pearl Izumi Sugar Short. I'll wear them this weekend at the park!

Any opinions on the Novara Mezzo short?

I have tried Brave Soldier and for me anyway it worked about the same as Chamois Butter. I also tried Crotch Guard and it was ok but being an oil makes it hard to carry around on a ride. I know they say you can carry the container in your jersey pocket but that just takes up too much room for me. Assos is ok but Im not keen on the menthol. Have not tried Body Glide so can't comment on that one.

I like Bag Balm but don't like what it does to my chamois. Luckily my dry feet love it so it will get lots of use even if I don't wear it on rides.

For now anyway I will stick with Chamois Butter.:)
