We spent Friday afternoon at the bike shop. The Hub ended up with the Trek Pilot. He loves it already and made me ride twice yesterday.

The one bad thing. We bought the bike out of town. Loaded it on our new Saris hitch mount and drove an hour and a half home. I had told my husband that I hope he didn't scratch it. I freak over scratches. HATE THEM!

He took the bike off the rack and discovered that the arm that stabilizes below the seat tube had worn the paint off of that area of the bike. :( That was a huge disappointment.

He works me really hard to keep up with him now.

bummer about the paint. he's improved THAT much with a new bike??? WOW!

(where's the picture of you and your new saddle?)

Yes, this bike is so much lighter and he's much faster.

I have not had time to take the picture, but I will really soon! Yesterday was the first chance I had to ride any distance at all and I totally forgot about the picture.

The saddle is fantastic though!!! LOVE IT!

DH's new Trek. He was not wild about the color, but did not have a choice since this was that last year for the Pilot 1.0. (you can see where the paint rubbed off in transit.)

That's funny- you can tell he's hot-rodding it already....he's in his big gear ring while you're in your middle gear ring. ;) :D Tell him not to mash up hills too much or he'll blow out his knees! (just ask Mr. Silver). :D

Gorgeous gleaming bikes!

Yesterday we took them out to a neighborhood that has streets, but the houses are not finished. Lots of hills and just a good place to ride, we THOUGHT.

In some areas, rain had washed a lot of sand in the roads. My bike was fishtailing and at one point I nearly lost control and almost didn't get my foot out of the power grips in time to catch myself. It was steaming hot with no breeze or shade. I told the hub that I'd had it. We needed mountain bikes for that dirt!

We left, came home and washed the sand and dirt off the bikes and took off for the rails to trails. A much better ride.

One reason he has it in the higher gear is because they did not get it all adjusted out right!!! In the lower gear ring it makes a lot of noise and grinds. He's got to get it back up there for more adjustment, but since it's an hour and a half away and not local, it will probably be next week before he can do that.

Oh Sandra, your bike is beautiful! I like his too...but I think yours is prettier!

Hmm, I would've never noticed what gear the bike was in. Remind me that people look at those things next time I take a picture of my bike :D

Anyway, Sandra congrats to your husband!

Thank you and don't tell him, but I like my bike better too. ;)

What a gorgeous brace of bikes! Despite your first sandy adventure, you should really start having some fun on your rides together now--even though he's faster with the new wheels. See, this is why I'm kind of glad the Chief won't spring for a new, lighter bike to replace his heavy hybrid--in a stiff headwind, I can beat the pants off him. ;)

Love the look of the Brooks, btw.

Yeah! I know what you mean. Why did I try to convince him he needed to get a lighter bike!

Too funny! :p :p

Yeah Sandra, your bike IS way groovin'er than his. ;)

Glad to see you both have mirrors. ;)

Even though HIS bike cost twice is much, mine is prettier PLUS I have the Brooks. :D

Hey Sandra,

A couple of nice looking bikes, but I'm going to be the dissenter.... I think your DH's is awesome -- it's identical to mine!!! I brought mine home July 14th and I'm still loving (almost) every minute I spend on it.

I feel your hubby's pain about the paint that rubbed off where the hitch mounted bike rack rubbed. The exact same think happened when my Pilot came home. My DH solved the problem by wrapping duct tape where the bike & the hitch make contact. No problems since, but that mark bugs me every time I see it.

What kind of mirror do you have on your bike. That's one thing about my hybrid that I really miss. My LBS recommended one that hooks on my glasses, but I really want one that mounts on the handlebars.

I use a Mirrycle. It's great. I love it.

Hubby has a Third Eye BARend Mirror that he had on his hybrid. It's not so good on the road bike. It doesn't stick out far enough, so it mostly reflects his hip as he pedals. He's going to get one like mine eventually.

P.S. Not to insult you, I really do like his bike. I actually think HIS bike looks like more of a girls bike and mine looks more like a boys. But, I have to love what I have and what I ride, so I keep telling myself mine is cooler! LOL

I did tell him in the bike shop "no fair! I'm the one that likes to ride the most and you get the best bike"!!! (mine was used and his is brand spankin new)

Sandra, your brooks looks smashing!

DH's bike looks nice too.

You didn't try to touch it up? I was thinking about taking some white gloss enamel spray paint and spraying it on a paper plate and then lightly brushing it on with a brush. It may look worse.

I did write an email to Saris customer service to let them know about the problem. I think they need to be aware and also I'm scared to use it on a long distance now. You may want to notify them as well.

Sandra,

I didn't mean to imply I was insulted.... just had to get in a vote for the Pilot as most beautiful bike:D. They are both great looking bikes:) And, in the end, riding comfort and performance trumps paint job. I rode a Trek 1000 that that had the flame-looking paint job and I loved the paint, but the bike wasn't nearly as comfortable as the Trek. Plus, my helmet matched the Pilot...

You're lucky to have a DH who understands the need for a good bike. Mine (the same one who is drooling over a $15,000 motorcycle on EBay as we speak) has thrown a few jabs my way about the $$ invested in my bike.

Thanks for the mirror link -- it's in my shopping cart.

Oh, and about the paint -- DH said I would make it look worse if I tried to touch it up. I put clear nail polish on it. I may ask the bike shop for their recommendations.

Happy riding!

Sandra, one of my team members suggested that I wrap a soft cloth around the frame at any point that the rack clamped on. I wrap the cloth between the frame and the cable (on the top tube) so that once it's clamped down the cable wont scratch the frame.

Sandra, How did you get a mtb mirror to work on the drop bar? I like it, but does it fit on well? not too crazy about my helmet mirror- can't get it adjusted well. Jenn

sandra

You just take the little cap out of the end of the bar. This particular mirror is very adjustable. That's why it works better than the mirror that hubby has. It sort of sticks out to the side.

Let me know if you if you want me to, I'll take a close-up pic of it on my bike.

Have you considered these for scratch protection?

I can't tell exactly where or how you use those. They look interesting though.

I saved the link for the mirryacle(sp?)and found a backup mirror too off Amazon- Could you post a closeup if you don't mind? I took off my helmet mirror- aggravating. Thanks in advance :) Jenn

That's nifty Sandra, definately will get one in the near future. Thanks for posting. Looks easier than the wacky helmet mirror I can't get adjusted. Jenn
