Hello ladies-

Well, I am getting ready to leave the Bay Area to hot and humid Houston, TX. On that note I think we need to have a farewell ride and lunch/dinner outing!

Let's start with the possible dates of doing something and then move onto the deciding of where to ride.

As of right now I am free the weekends of Aug 25-26, Sept 1-2, and Sept 8-9. I leave the area on Sept. 11, and the movers will have come on Sept 7 (but I am keeping my bike and driving it to Houston with me.

Now as for ride locations... any strong votes? I know that some people have a hard time getting to places not easily accessable by public transportation, so let me know if that is the case. We could either do a Peninsula ride in my neck of the woods, like the Portola loop, maybe Old La Honda if people want to climb, or out Canada rd (maybe on a Sunday when it is closed to traffic), or we could do Alameda Creek with a jaunt up Jo's nemesis hill.... Ride from SF across the Golden Gate (I have never done that)... anyways, I am open to suggestions. (Yah, Yah, I know... it is my party... but I am never good at making these kinds of decisions!)

Anywhoo.... let me know who is interested and what works best for people and we will get it organized.

Ellen

Ellen- Since you've NEVER done the GG Bridge, I think that would be a fine ride.

I can come over on the Vallejo Ferry- it stops at Embarcadero. Others could come on BART from the East Bay. And folks from the peninsula could maybe do a train (don't know that one).

The bridge ride is really quite neat- best to do it on a Sunday when we ride on the ocean side. Yes we have to be careful, but if we go early enough it's not too bad (from my point of view). It's a fun ride over to Tiburon and there are good eating places there as well.

Any weekend would be good for me (now that I"m working part time!!:p :p :p )

Sept 8-9 would be out for me, but at the moment the other dates would work fine.

Whatever you'd like to do, I'd be fine with it. The GG Bridge would be neat, esp if you've never done it before. Lots of good places to eat in Sausalito & Tiburon. Just sayin.

We could even ride across the GG Bridge, thru Sausalito & Tiburon and out to the Larkspur Ferry and take the ferry back to SF.

OOO... I kind of like the sound of that.

So, if we be thinking about doing the GG, we should probably do either Sunday Aug 26 or Sept 2. Just a reminder that Sept 3 is labor day incase people are planning to go out of town.

Ooh ooh! Me! Me!

But I can only come if it is the weekend of Sept 1-2. I'll try any ride! I can't believe it is already that time! :(

OK, so looking like Sunday Sept. 2 for a ride from SF across the GG into Sausolito and Tiburon and maybe a ferry ride back... sound good to people?

This is the list I have so far:

Broken snap might be able to meet up with y'all somewhere. Hmmm. If I BART up to SF, where does the ferry drop you? Of I could take the ferry and meet up......

ohhh that is a wonderful ride. Wish I could join you but I will probably be out of town for the holiday weekend (some sort of bike tour, probably).

I'll follow this thread in case my plans cancel. It would be great to see you all!!!

Snap- The Ferries all come to or near the Ferry Building. If you take BART to the Embarcadero Station and then come down to Embarcadero you will find us. That would be an easy way for you to get here.

Time and place to meet would be good. I'll have to check the ferry schedule, but I think I could probably make it by 10:00AM or so. Best to go early as we'll have less traffic and less cyclists to worry about on the bridge.

This sounds like lots of fun! Only one hitch- the Bay Bridge will be closed that weekend so if you are planning on public transportation plan for crowded trains and ferries (in my case).

I know, I'm lazy. We could meet in SF (maybe at the Sports Basement - lots of parking) and ride over into Tiburon, maybe do the Paradise loop or ride up to Nicasio or something. I wouldn't recommend trying to go anywhere on Hwy 1 because w/holiday weekend the traffic will blow.

What's up with the Bay Bridge? Why the heck are they closing it on a holiday weekend? I seem to remember the same thing (bridge closure) the weekend Fishdr - oops, Beedr - was here.

It's on account of the bridge work - closing it over the LD weekend would disrupt commuter traffic the least.

I like MPs idea. It's scenic, not difficult, and with lots of snack opportunities.

Perhaps people who won't be joining us on the ride could meet us in Tiburon, or even Larkspur, for some eats, then we could ride back on the ferry into SF?

Sounds good to me!

Thanks for coming up with a plan!

Lots of food possibilities:

Tiburon: Guaymas (outdoor seating available, mexican), Servino's (Italian, also outdoor food), Jake's

Larkspur: Left Bank (Froggy), Marin Brewing Co. (Right across from the ferry so folks could ferry back to SF if they had a brew)

I'm liking the whole Tiburon loop to Larkspur and Brew pub then ferry back idea....

Don't know about the Larkspur Left Bank, but the San Jose one makes awesome Lemon Drops. Just sayin.....:p

Hmmmm... is that a food vote from Snap? ;)

I don't know the food/reseraunt scene at all in Marin, so I will defer to you all for the food decision, any of the places sound good to me! Are these all places we can show up to from a bike ride?

They are - I have to say (sorry Snap) that Left Bank is probably the trickiest in terms of where you'd put your bike while eating/drinking because it is right on the street and the patio is very small. That's where the Brewing Co is really good - large rear patio and plenty of places for the bikes to rest. Guaymas is similar and they do have a full bar.

No worries - I'm a LB regular down here, I don't need to go to the Larkspur location.

I'll probably be BART'n up and taking the ferry over, so within walking distance would be nice for me. (My knees 'o crap walking distance, mind you!) Or I call a cab.

I'll just need an approximate time to get there.

Well, you knows I likes my brewskis :D so the Marin Brewing Co (http://www.marinbrewing.com/index2.php) sounds great to me. And they have a very large menu.

The Golden Gate ferry system has added more ferrys between Larkspur and SF over Labor Day weekend on account of the Bay Bridge closure:
http://www.goldengate.org/news/transit/laborday_baybridge.php#LarkspurSF

So we'll have more afternoon ferry crossings to choose from, one every hour on the half-hour between 12:30 and 5:30. I think we should aim for the 4:30 one, just in case. That gets us to the SF Ferry Building at Embarcadero at around 5:30, and then we'll still need to get back to the Sports Basement (assuming we start from the Sports Basement, which seems like a good a place as any with the plentitude of parking). Hmm, maybe we should shoot for the 3:30 ferry instead?

Oh, and the ferry notice mentions the Sausalito Art Festival that weekend too. Yikes, I had forgotten all about that. Well, we'll just need to give ourselves extra time to wend our way thru Sausalito, I suppose. ( MP, any idea on how this would impact us? )

I'm thinking we should try to reach Larkspur by 2:30, that would give us almost a couple of hours to hang out and party before getting on line for the 4:30 ferry (or, if we decide on the 3:30 ferry, then reach Larkspur by 1:30). Does that sound reasonable?

I'm not sure how long we'd need to ride from the Presidio Sports Basement over the GG Bridge to the Larkspur ferry - I've done it a grand total of once, and I don't recollect how long it took, tho I could probably make an estimate. MP or anyone else, do you have any idea how long it would take at a social pace ?

Ed. to add: It looks like the total mileage starting from near the GG bridge thru Sausalito & Tiburon & around Paradise to Larkspur is only about 25 miles. So if we started around 10 am from the Sports Basement and did some major lollygagging & sightseeing, that would put us in Larkspur around 1, I would think.

Anyhow, just tossing this all up for discussion. What do you all think? Especially Dr. Badger, since this is your party, after all.

That all sounds wonderful... I love when people do all the planning for me :D

Meeting at 10 sounds good, I would just have to leave PA by around 9, which gets me my beauty sleep

I might want to cycle back to SF as I'll be on the ferry back to Vallejo. So if anyone wants to come back via the GG bridge with me, that would be fine as well.

Any restaurant is fine. Outside is good if not too windy. Larkspur OR Tiburon good as both have restaurants right by the ferries!

I'll do my Vallejo ferry sched check today.

Looks like I can be at the SF Ferry building at 9:45AM. I figure at least 30 mins to Sports Basement from there as I have to get off boat and then ride through FWarf, etc. I can also come earlier or later.

Anyone coming over on BART could meet me at Ferry Building, then we could all ride together to meet the rest of you.

How does that sound?

DrBadger

Sounds good Nancy.....I figure that if you get to the Ferry Building about 9:45, you should get to sports basement right around the time we are getting close to rolling!

I am so looking forward to this ride! See you all soon!

Okay - so if you guys started at 10-ish from the Basement, then I will try to meet you en route. I'd rather avoid the tourist traffic over the GGB (having just returned from it - ugh!). So I will just ride from home and try to meet you guys, probably on the waterfront in Sausalito, about 10:30 - 10:45.

Nancy, I'll ride back with you afterward as far as MV.

We were just at the Marin Brewing Co last night and I am thrilled to report they have Starbrew. (It's almost a barleywine. They rarely have it, but when they do we bring some home. :D

Thanks MP- That would be loads of fun. I think we should have some cell phone numbers - I'll be able to call you when I'm actually ready to roll from the Ferry Building. We can call MP when we leave Sports Basement.
