On a quick morning ride with my partner this morning, we met up with a gal who was easily 20 years our senior, who effortlessly kept up with us on our new, zippy carbon fibers - on her mountain bike, fully loaded with paniers.
DAMN!
As she joined us at the top of a hill, I said, "nice work!" She was great. She's been a bike commuter in LOS ANGELES for 30 years! I talked with her for a moment about it, telling her my desire to commute, but the LA traffic scares the #@$% out of me! She understood and said you have to be careful, but it was incredibly rewarding. She was commuting 30 miles that morning! My commute for my current job would only be 6 miles one way.
It is good inspiration, because I've been flirting with the idea of commuting on my Gary Fisher mtn. bike. I've put some slicks on it, ordered a rear rack, a bag, and some lights. As soon as they come in the mail - I'm going to do it! If she can do it for 30 years in this city - I can certainly hang tough myself, for a measly 6 miles! Right? Right?
