...my long intro:

Well I did it. I bought my first bike in years. Have been planning it for many months. It was supposed to be my reward for Halfway-To-Goal weightloss (65 pounds) but I caved at the 50-pound loss mark and went bike shopping. Just couldn't stand it any longer! Have been lurking around the boards for several weeks, taking notes and learning some of the lingo. I took alot of knowledge on my bike ride tests that I learned from this site. Thank you ladies!

I test rode many different bikes, but kept coming back to the Specialized Dolce. I'm 5'3 with short inseam and short torso. She just felt right to me. Had already decided to go clipless right out the gate. Haven't been on a bike in several years and just couldn't see re-learning one way, only to have to re-teach myself again when I ultimately knew what I wanted from cycling- just went for it. Spent many hours at LBS and they took really good care of me and set up my bike up perfectly, geared me out just as I wanted , spent time with me in the shop so I could practice changing tubes. Even threw in some freebies; guess they figured they were getting plenty of money out of me already. I also tried on many different shoes. Told my LBS guy I did not want to know what brand of shoe, I just wanted to pick the one that felt best on my foot. He'd take them out of the box and hand them to me. Being so new, I was not able to recognize logos. I ended up with a pair from specialized. The LBS told me to bring my bike back at 30 and 60 days for free check-over, tune up and fit 'tweakings'. Said it is not unusual for brand new bikes to work things loose and need some adjusting for tension. Is this normal?

Brought her home last night. First ride at noon today. First tumble right off the bat; clipped the right in and pushed off with the left - but failed to have the right pedal on top and could not get any power for take-off and over I went. Laughed at myself, got back in and took off - successfully I might add. Only rode for 3.35 miles though, my timing needs a little work. It was already 92 deg. with a heat index of 99. Yesterday, we were supposedly the hottest place in the county. Is it too masochistic to admit that I kinda/sorta enjoyed riding with blood running down my elbow, like it was a badge of my courage? Does that make me official now?

Note to self: place antibacterial wipes and bandaides in bike bag.

I turn 40 in December which was the catalyst behind finally tackling my weight and lack of physical fitness. I plan on being Forty, Fit, and Fabulous. Plan to celebrate it by completing a half century. Saying a century overwhelms me at this point and I am trying to keep everything realistic.

Good for you!!! She's a beauty!

I think it was wise to reward yourself early. I bet you'll see the rest of the weight drop right off just from riding. I also ride a Dolce, and turned 40 in May. I'm in the best shape I've ever been in. You will be, too, and it will be easier and more fun getting there than you can imagine!

Like how you manged to fit 2 cages on with a pump. I'm going to copy that set up. See, you're already teaching the old dogs!

Wear that badge of courage with honor---you earned it!

Congrats to you! I just got a new bike too and I know the excitement.
LBS told me to bring mine back after a bit too, so I think that's normal.

HI!
Congratulations, Pam, and welcome!
That's a beautiful bike (and how stylin' --- shoes to match!).
Someone I met once said (okay...it was about mountainbiking) that it's not "official" until you leave a little DNA behind. So, I guess you're offical now! :D
Wishing you the best of luck with your "Forty, Fit, and Fabulous" goal. Happy riding.

Hey! You jumped in with both feet, huh? Or maybe it was a foot and a half... CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I think getting fit by 40 is a really great goal. I am 39 and feeling similarly.

Wow, that's a pretty bike - love those colors!

I'm impressed with your starting right off with the clipless pedals - I'm still chicken about taking that step. :o

Suhweeeeet :D

And congrats on being brave and going clipless right away.

My 40's decade has been the best of my life so far. I just entered my 50's and that is still my Mantra - 50 fit, fabulous and free!

It is perfectly normal to bring the bike back in and it should be done. cables stretch and just little tweaks will need to be done. I found also after increasing my distance from 15 miles to 20 to 30 . . . until finally doing a 3 day tour of 58 miles per day I really knew what fit needed to be tweaked on my bike.

You will love your dolce and she is soooooo purdy :D

Congrats on the bike! Very pretty colors. And congrats on your first battle scar too. I love your shoes - because of the color combo, they kind of look like Mary Janes. Gotta love Mary Janes!

Congrats on the weight loss so far and congrats on your beautiful new bike! My bike shop also told me to bring back my new baby for a "break-in" tune-up after the first 65 miles or so.

Have fun riding!!! (and may you have no more bloody elbows! :o )

I'm glad you didn't "wait" for 65 pounds, because it will be a lot more fun losing weight ON a bike!

congrats on the new bike!

Oh, pretty! I like the colors. And those shoes are darling. I love white bar tape, even though I can't have it because I would grime it up quickly. If it helps, I have made it a tradition now of promptly falling over on every new bike I get...fortunately, I have had only one other spill after those first falls. Enjoy the ride!

Beautiful bike, and the shoes look great, too. Hey, now that you've had your fall, it's over with and you can relax and enjoy yourself. :D

Noticed you're in Niceville--I'm in Milton over in Santa Rosa county. Maybe we can get together for a ride sometime.
