Got back from the Worlds in Verona yesterday. Had a fantastic time! We were very late booking a hotel and with 2 weeks to go we just took pot luck but what luck! We got a room on the finishing straight at the 150m to go mark and to top it all we had a 4th floor with a balcony! We could even see the finish line. It was incredible - we couldn't have planned it better.
The girls race on Saturday was good. Parts of the course through Verona were quite narrow so you got really good view of the riders and mens race on Sunday was brilliant - such an exciting finish.
In the evening all of Verona was partying and a big band of Dutch fans, all dressed in orange were playing oompah music, while loads of very merry Belgiums danced out side one of the street cafe. It was such a party atmosphere - you would have thought it was them who'd won!
Meanwhile the Spanish fans formed a huge flag waving crowd in front of the podium to cheer on Oscar Friere. Later on I passed Paulini who'd go the bronze and saw he'd swapped jersey's with Eric Zabel who came 2nd, and looked very funny with blue Italian team shorts & gillet but with German team colours on his top. He was weaving his way through the crowd with his 2 year old daughter sitting on his handle bars.
It was a great weekend and Verona is an amazing place. Seriously need to work off all that pizza and ice cream now...!:D
