View Full Version : Questions about a Trek 1000

I would like opinions on this bike. I'm a newbie beginner rider. I have the opportunity to get a Trek 1000 used at a very good price ($400 or less). It is a 2004 and supposedly has only been ridden once. It is in mint condition and is the correct frame size (52) for me.

I have a Giant Cypress DX hybrid and have been wanting a road bike, but an expensive bike is not in the budget right now. This opportunity popped up and I am considering it and wanted opinions.

Another question ~ can the Trek 1000 handle a little wider tire than what comes on it?

Thank you for your input!

Sandra

I'm unable to comment on price (check completed auctions on ebay for that) or wheel changes, but it's a very good bike. This is what Silver started on before she went carbon...and she still rides it often.

I have a 2006 Trek 1000 WSD that I purchased in February. I am very happy with it. Everything works great, it's getting me everywhere I want to go, and it's nice and fast! I do think I'll want to upgrade at some point in the future, but for now, I really have no complaints.

I don't know whether or not you could use wider tires. I don't see why not. As long as the brakes could be adjusted to accommodate the width, it seems like a wider tire should fit. I'm sure your LBS could tell you for sure.

Under $400 sounds like a great price to me. I paid nearly $700 for mine, but it was new. If you buy it, be sure to post pictures:) :) :)

On average, your road bike should easily be able to accommodate a 700X28 tire. I've seen some style tires that are a skinny 700X32 work.

I get to check it out tomorrow. I'm excited. For what it's worth, it also comes with an opened, but never put on cyclocomputer. along with a saddlebag, and spare tire.

I don't really need any of that, but I won't complain.

Geoff (my BF and LBS manager that sells Trek) says that you can do up to 700x28. Any wider and there won't be enough frame and fork clearance not to mention you'd have to deflate and reinflate the tire to take it off and put it back on.

Go for it! I love my 1000!

Yep, with all those extras, that's a heck of a deal (and it's really sounding like it wasn't riden much!:)

After our local tri last year, we were talking to someone we knew who got her Trek 1000 at a garage sale for $500...and we thought that was a deal!

I have several friends that ride trek 1000s. If it fits, its a great starter road bike, and at an excellent price. Heck, I know several even moderately experienced riders on them. GO FOR IT, and post pictures!!

I paid $500 in March for my 2006 Trek 1000 WSD. I think that's a good deal on that bike. You should be very happy with it.

I GOT IT!!!! It was bike love at first site. Even after she threw me onto the ground (ooops, not used to pedal straps) and bruising my hand and wrist, I was still in love. :p

I have never seen a "used" bike that was so unused. The chain and everything is so shiny, it doesn't look like it's had any dust on it. I believe she did only ride it once and that must have been the test drive off the showroom floor. It is perfect. I love it!!!

I do have pictures, if I can figure out how to post it. This may not have been the color I would have picked, but I sure would pick this price. The bike also came with more extras than I thought. It came with a Specialized saddle bag, a Cat Eye bike computer still in the box, an extra tube, tire levers, and Innovations Ultraflate Inflation System.

I have another question. I've almost KILLED myself twice with the pedals and straps. Is there a way to take the straps off or do I just have to change pedals. I also think I need to raise the handlebars, but I'm afraid it may have to go to the Trek dealer for that. Anybody know? (I'm sure someone does. :p )

Now I'll see if I can post a picture.

For now I'm calling her Helen. Helen Wheels because she has nearly killed me today. I need to make a few adjustments, but I think it is a great bike for the price I paid. It's hard to believe it was used. It's just like new.

That bike looks great! You got a great deal. I sold my 2004 Trek 1000, with 4,000 miles and peeling decals for $350!

The pedals... get ones without the straps... or bite the bullet and get clipless.

I tested my Trek 1000 with those pedals. I fell in the parking lot because I couldn't get free from the straps. I left the shop with clipless pedals... never looked back.

sandra
07-29-2007, 05:54 PM
I think the only miles on this bike are from the showroom floor, to the test drive and to her car. She said she rode it once.

I fell in the parking lot too and I'm OLD!!! You should see the palm of my hand, not to how my wrist feels and my hip! Those pedals have to go. For now I think I just want regular pedals. :o

Can I raise the handlebars or is that something the Trek dealer has to do?

She's a beauty, Sandra! And whatta deal!

It looks like the bars are as high as they will go, with that stem but you can get one that angles up more. It may be good to go to the dealer, and let them help figure out what you need. Also, I think you can remove the toeclips (the old ones used to attach to the pedal with screws, and the strap just pulls out), but then you'd just be left with platforms. Clipless are great, once you get the hang of it, but it's one of those preference things.

Congrats, and have fun!:)

Triskeliongirl

To get the bars higher you need to buy a stem with more rise. Any LBS can help you, not just a trek dealer. I LOVE the color! enjoy her!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like to me that you could flip the stem to raise the handlebars and also I would advise tilting the handlebars up so that the top is horizontal (I put a little level on the part that extends toward the shifters). Look at pictures of the tour bikes, that's how most of them have their handlebars.

Definately get clipless pedals and bike shoes, nashbar is having a big sale as is performance.

She's a beautiful bike....and SILVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

please explain flip the stem. We did roll the bars back toward me a little bit and that helped a lot.

Sandra, what a great bike..oh my, can see why you fell in love with Helen. Great price too. Some stems can be flipped around to give you either a little higher raise or to lower them. My last stem was that way, which still wasn't enough for me, so I am waiting at the shop for another one with a different angle to come in (higher raise). My bike is a Fuji, purchased at a Fuji dealer and am putting on a Trek stem from the Trek dealer. In fact, the stem on now is a Bontrager, the Trek dealer was more than glad to accomodate me, he knew I needed my problem fixed and we are working on another stem. My stem wasn't cheap, but to relieve a back ache, it was worth it. And he's taking this one back in on trade, so he's willing to work and accomodate me too. Enjoy your bike..you will have lots of fun on her.

SILVER!!! Is your bike Silver? Was your old Trek 1000 just like mine?

I'll have to get accustomed and skilled at riding this bike before I'll be ready for a better bike. This one could glide right out from me now.

Wow - the bike looks GREAT!

Definitely take the clips and straps off! I almost killed myself with them as well. Like Skiierchickie said, you should be able to just pull the straps off and remove the cages by undoing them with a small wrench. I got mine off no problem. I rode around with just the platform pedals for a couple of months until I was feeling pretty comfortable on the bike, then I switched to clipless.

Enjoy the bike...you got a great deal!

sandra

I posted this in another section, but I can't find how to get the straps off! They have reflectors on top of them and there must be screws under the reflectors that hold the straps on. I can't figure out how to get to the reflectors off to get to the screws. I can't see any screw heads. :o

Pedal Wench
07-30-2007, 07:30 AM
Oh - you can also take off the straps and still leave the toe clips on. They'll be safer for you to use, and you'll still get a little benefit from having the clips on.

Did you understand the flip the stem part? you turn it upside down so the the angle it up rather than down.

yes, both my bikes are silver (have silver on them) I'm a silversmith. I think that mine may be a later model than yours. It's silver with black and blue stickers/stripes.

You could just give yourself a little more time with the straps. I really haven't had any trouble with mine at all--I've only been using them since March. But I DID loosen them way up when I started out.

On my 1000 the pedals have a little dealy sticking out in the middle of the bottom of the platform which lets you turn the pedals over and slide your foot inside in one swift motion. I taught myself to use that right away, and then I taught myself that I would be pulling my foot backwards to dismount. So far, so good. ::::working spells to keep the jinx away:::

Lovely and Congrats on your good deal. ditch those pedals. I've got dual pedals, clipless on one side, platformon the other and have the clipless tension set loose so I can get out easily(several other folks on TE have this set up aswell I think) . Love the silver/red/ & black. Many happy miles. Jennifer :)

Hi Sandra,
Congrats on your Trek 1000. I just got one too, a 2005. The first thing I did was change the pedals out. I went clipless. I have never ridden clipless. Fell over twice and skinned my knee. I now remember to turn my heel out instead of trying to pull my foot off the pedal :)

Its one smooth ride isn't it. Many happy miles!

I'm thinking that Sandra needs a Southern Indiana Tri Team uniform, it would SO match her bike!

Hmmmm....I guess I'm not exactly sure how to remove the stem from the headset. I'm guessing you know how to remove the handlebars from the stem since you did rotate the handlebars upward. When I got my new stem they replaced it at the shop. I watched......but I guess I wasn't paying enough attention.

BTW, your bike sure would look good with a red saddle and red handlebar tape when the time comes........just saying.......:D

Southern Indiana Tri Team uniform ~ CHECK
red saddle ~ CHECK
red handlebar tape ~ CHECK

A good red saddle? I'm ready for recommendations!

that probably is the saddle that came with the bike. Actually I have a similar saddle (the same one) on both of mine. It's a very good saddle! I don't really have saddle issues. however, I am planning to try a lighter weight saddle. The one that I really want is .....SILVER...but it's $250 and I don't want to spend that much $$ right now. So I went with another black one that was less.

I don't have personal experience with this one but lookie:

I think the Trek 1000 comes with a Bontrager saddle that doesn't look like that one. Uh, I think I'm getting confused with the Element thread--what year is your bike again? oh yeah, the Element was an '06 and the bike is older....so that may be the stock saddle after all.

If it did come with the same Bontrager saddle that both my Treks have, you should be glad you didn't end up with it! It was hideous.

You remove the stem from the headset by turning the little hex screw in the middle of the headset. ou will also have to remove the handlebars from the stem by loosening the hex screw on the front, too. You shouldn't have to move any bar tape, cables or whatever. Just disconnect it all, flip it over, and reconnect it all again.

You need to make sure you do the headset in the right order, and there's a bit more to it than just screwing it in. Once you've got it flipped, you tighten the headset screw BEFORE you tighten the screws on the stem. If it's too tight, you'll feel it binding your fork - it won't turn freely. If too loose, it will turn TOO loosely, and you can also test it by holding in your front brake and trying to rock the bike. There should be no movement when rocking the bike, and the fork can turn easily. Once that's all set, THEN you tighten the screws holding the stem in place.

She's at the LBS now. He is going to flip the stem for me. He said he could move the brakes to a little higher position, but he'd have to take the handlebar tape off and rewrap it. I was all for it. I was going to get RED! They talked me out of red because they said that colors get so dirty. So, I'm keeping the brakes where they are for a while.

He also said the headset was loose. (Could have been something we did, I don't know.) He heard the noise and checked it as soon as we set it down in the shop.

I hope I get to pick it up tomorrow.

umm, I don't know if this was to me or not, but I don't have an Element. My bike is an 04 and the seat is Bontrager, I just don't know what style.

The LBS guy says that I am just not used to riding in this position. I'm accustomed to the hybrid and it is going to take a while to adjust.

It looks pretty either way I'm sure!

Whether or not the tape gets dirty sort of depends on the texture of the tape. The celeste-colored cork tape on my Bianchi gets super dirty and has to be washed frequently. However, the pretty pink Fizik tape on my road bike doesn't get dirty at all (unless I manage to get bike grease on it, I'm a little klutzy like that). It has more of a plasticy finish, compared to the more porous texture of the cork tape which has a greater tendency to pick up dirt.

I've discovered, by the way, that baby wipes and/or Wet Ones are magic for getting grease off of hands and bike. I always keep a few singles in my seat bag now.

At the risk of disagreeing with the lovely Silver (did you know that I hear she has a really cool husband:cool:  ), I didn't like the idea of red tape.
