Just saw this on the news. A rural road with no shoulder...
Carmel bicyclist dies in Cicero crash, 2nd hospitalized
CICERO — One Carmel-area bicyclist is dead and another has been seriously injured after a car struck them today on 236th Street between Tollgate and Mill Creek roads.
The first call about the accident came in just before noon, and Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department deputies investigated the scene late into the afternoon.
Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Vicky Dunbar said Gary A. Baugh, 59, of Carmel, died at the scene. Michael J. Kenniff, who turned 67 today, was flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in serious condition with a head injury. At 4 p.m. this afternoon, a Methodist spokesman said Kenniff was in stable condition in the emergency room.
The two were hit by Nancy S. Miller, 69, of Sheridan, who was driving a 2002 Cadillac DeVille.
According to Dunbar, the car and the two bicyclists were headed west out of Cicero on 236th Street, which is called Jackson Street in the town, but the driver apparently did not see the riders. Dunbar said it did not appear the driver made any evasive maneuvers or attempts to stop. Police took statements from two witnesses, one driving eastbound and one westbound behind the driver involved in the accident.
The posted speed limit was 50 mph, Dunbar said, but she was unsure how fast the car was going.
Miller was taken for blood tests, as required by state law, but Dunbar said officers do not suspect she was driving impaired.
“She was extremely upset at the scene,” Dunbar said. “An officer took a taped statement, so she was able to answer questions.”
Al Patterson, the county’s parks director, said 236th Street is a marked bike route. Currently, it’s a shared roadway, but long-term plans call for a multiuse path down the side of the road, similar to the one on the south side of 146th Street.
