View Full Version : Kinda personal but underwear???

I've only recently gotten in to doing longer bike rides and one think I have noticed is that I need to find a better underwear!!!!
I have been wearing my regular cotton undies under my bike shorts but as soon as they get damp they start bunching and chaffing.
Any recommendations for something better?

Bike shorts are meant to be worn without underwear. That may seem odd when you're new to biking, but you'll be much more comfortable!

Oh man, now I feel SOOOOO stupid! I never would have thought about wearing my bike shorts without underwear underneath.
Most of the people I know that bike are men so it's not like it is something I can come out and ask them :D
I am so glad that I found this board, I have a feeling that I will be learning a lot here ;)

No need to feel stupid, we can only learn by asking the questions! Welcome to TE -- you'll love browsing the topics. I've learned a lot myself in the few months I've been on the boards. And you'll find an amazingly supportive bunch of women here!
Enjoy your next ride -- no more bunching & chafing! :)
You think that's personal?
hehehe
You have no idea. there's nothing personal here:p

LOL, I saw the Diva cup thread when I was trying to do a search about underwear. I found out about Diva Cups from a horse discussion board that I belong to. I tried it about a year ago and will NEVER go back to using anything else!
I havn't read through that that thread here but I wonder if it got as contentious as the one over on my other board!

The Diva cup was...contentious? Now I can see something like the new BC pills that will have you only having one period a year being contentious, but the Diva cup?
You must provide us a link!
Anyway, no underwear! And, if you're like me, you will soon realise that a thin chamois (that's the liner) in bike shorts is better than a thick one :p .

Never wear panties under bike shorts either!
We went for a long ride today. After we got home I got busy trying to resolve a computer issue I have been having. My bike shorts are so comfy, I forgot I had them on. I told dh it must be a sign, I'll have no trouble adjusting to Depends. :D

Although I agree with the above (!), I find the less I wear underwear, the more comfortable I am in almost all situations!
Interestingly, I was talking recently with a cyclist friend (a very experienced cyclist), and she always wears underwear with her bike shorts! I was astounded. She says she has taken to wearing thongs so that her cyclist friends can't tell and don't razz her!

OK, I'll confess....
I ride over 100 miles a week, my longest rides are 60 and 70 miles....and I always wear panties under my biking shorts!
I put a big glob of regular old unscented hand cream on my girly area and then wear plain old cotton Fruit of the Looms low rise. Never have a problem.
(I did try thongs once and simply could not get used to them.)
After spending over $100 per pair of shorts or knickers, there's no way I want to put them through the washer after every ride- man, that would wear them out right quick! So if I haven't sweated too much I only need to wash them every 4-6 rides. I just toss the panties in the wash instead- the panties only cost about a dollar fifty a piece! :D
I know- many of you will say "how can you stand it?!"- but honestly it doesn't bother me a bit. My chamois are all really good ones for long distance riding, I ride on a Brooks (unpadded) saddle, and my bike has a slight touring geometry which means I am not bent forward too drastically and most of my weight is on my sitbones and not on my front girly bits.
Go ahead, scoff all you want....but I'm perfectly comfy and my shorts are going to last a LONG time! :p

Yup, I've heard many times that I shouldn't wear underwear but I'm not about to stop. Any problems I ever have, I can't attribute to underwear. Along with clips for my pedals, I'll have underwear on when I go to my final resting ground.

Solved the problem of the washer wearing out the clothes by buying a front loader with no agitator. My undies seem to last much longer now, and I don't have a problem putting my shorts in them every time I wear them. Besides, there's no way I'm wearing those stinky shorts a second time without washing them. I sweat clean through the chamois almost every time I ride.

Hey Lisa - I don't wear undies under my shorts (too uncomfortable for me, personally) and wash my shorts after each wearing. I am on year 3 of the same shorts, and they have lots of life left in them! (Oh, and yes, I DO put them in the dryer, which is supposed to also reduce their lifespan).

Seriously, with the amount of salt I lose through my sweating I can't wear my shorts more than once but I try to wash them gentle and always hang to dry. They are holding up pretty good and I right now I am rotating three pairs because I am just not happy with my others.
I have had a low tolerance for underwear for twenty five years, at least.
I have yet to encounter a pair of womens underwear that don't want to retreat into my butt cleavage. If I have to wear a skirt without pantyhose there will be jockey briefs or Underarmor shorts beneath it.
Is there some secret brand of underwear that I don't know about?

I wear UnderArmor shorts, Smartwool shorts, Ibex shorts, Jockey shorts, New Balance shorts. Mighty fine underwear. Soon I'll branch out into Champion's cotton women's undershorts. As soon as I can find a store that carries them. Ibex is going to have a lightweight women's undershort starting this fall.
"Boycut" briefs do NOT work for me, they end up creeping up my butt and wadding up at the tops of my thighs.
Patagonia's women's briefs are my favorite "traditional" underwear. http://www.rei.com/product/742857?vcat=REI_SSHP_WOMENS_CLOTHING_TOC Otherwise I much prefer long-legged undershorts. Thank goodness so many other women do, too; so all sorts of companies are making women's undershorts now. :D

Yep, that's me....Fred! :D
I guess we are all different when it comes to how underwear fits us. FWIW, I myself have a pear shape. I must say I have never had any wedgie problems with ANY brand I've ever worn (except thongs of course, which literally ARE wedgies!)
I have nicer panties i like for everyday wear, but for riding i'll just throw on some cotton low-rise FruitoftheLooms cheapies and then toss them in the laundry after the ride. I buy them in 3-packs for $3.99 so it's no big deal when they wear out. I don't sweat much in the shorts area when I ride unless it's over 90 degrees, so sweaty/salty shorts aren't a big issue for me.
To be honest, if my biking shorts only cost me $20 or so I'd probably be wearing them without panties too and tossing them in the wash after every ride. But I see what frequent washing does to my other good clothes and I want to avoid that since it's rather difficult and expensive to get biking shorts that are just perfect. It's way worse than shopping for jeans!

I think Lisa's solution is a good one considering how much these riding shorts cost. I paid more for my riding shorts than I pay for some of my best clothes. Considering the cost, they do need special treatment.
My problem is that where I live in the deep south, in the summer we are riding most days in heat from 95 degrees and up. I don't get that hot when I'm riding, but when I stop to take a break it is humid and muggy and HOT.
I never put mine in the dryer and in the fall and winter I'll try wearing panties and give them a rest and not wash them so much.
I also ride more than 3000km with every single pair of short, washing them after every ride. However, in the summer, they get washed by hand because I do laundry only once a week but ride more than four times a week (the number of pairs I own). I wash it before jumping in the shower with a bit of soap, wring well, hang to dry and voila! they are dry by the next ride.
I agree that regular washing machines are terrible with clothes, I can't wait for our laundry provider to install front-loaders.

Tuckervill is right front loaders are the way to go. I wash my shorts after every ride in this machine. I trust the front loader so much I even stick my very expensive Assos gear in there. I have been riding for about 2 years and my first pair of shorts still look great.:)

I have a front loader and dryer. I run all our cycling shorts, socks, gloves, shirts thru with other soft items (towels t shirts etc) on a gentle setting and then toss the lot in the dryer. Everything has held up well with minimal wear. Much prefer shorts only, they felt funny with u/w. I didn't know at first either.
also I have some cheap and some more $ shorts. I reserve the $ ones for the longest rides and use the others for the daily workout type rides which can mean a few washings a week.
now my tri suit i may treat differently, but I also have yet to use it....

I don't dry mine because my hubby is notorious for putting my clothes in the dryer on high. It's not only bad for my bike shorts (I believe), but for everything else I wear, too. So to keep him from accidentally putting my bike clothes in the dryer on high, I warned him high and low not to put them in at all.
I read recently that drying white clothes on high can make them dingy. I never knew that. My nice new dryer has all these cool settings that won't ruin my clothes, and I'm going to teach him how to use them if it takes me 20 years!

No underwear is the way to go. I started cycling a couple years ago and was told then that it was the best way. I sort of shuddered at first, but now I can't imagine a long, hot ride with "bunched up" underwear. I can't imagine any pair that would be comfortable, even the smallest ones.
Great question, by the way. I'm sure other people wanted to know but were afraid to ask.

I couldn't not wash my cycling shorts. I have 5 pair, not including mtb shorts, knickers, or skorts, which I only wear on my errand runs or mtbiking. My tights are unpadded and I wear them for different things, along with cycling. They all go in the wash, regular cycle, front loader and hung to dry. Now that I have all "good" shorts, i.e. Terry Bella and Shebeest SSS, they show no sign of wear after a year. Once in awhile they go in the dryer, by accident, but I don't make it a habit.
With regular clothes I wear the most minimal thong I can. I don't wear them under pantyhose or tights, either. I hate the feeling of underwear in general!

We wash our cycling gear in the washer on the regular cycle. I do have a machine without an agitator though so it isnt rough on clothes. But we never put them in the dryer. The heat dries out the elasticity in the lycra and destroys the band around the leg opening. And by the way Lisa, I haven't worn those 'bunchy' underware, but just the thought makes me happy I don't.:D

Grog, if I really wanted to save money on electricity, I'd stop using my air conditioner. Drying my clothes in a highly energy efficient dryer is a drop in the bucket compared to what it costs trying to stay cool in the summer time. Throwing the bike shorts in with clothes that are going to be dried anyway doesn't cost any more, either.
But yeah, I respect the sentiment! ;)

Me, too. I have some el cheapo Nashbar and Hind shorts that I bought in 1995 or 1996, and they are still going strong. Machine wash after every ride, drip dry.
Now I have 3 Terry Commuter Skorts and a pair of Voler shorts and a pair of Ibex 3/4s, so they are taking some of the work load of my old shorts. They also get washed in the machine and drip-dried after every ride.
I'm a super sweaty monster (salty-crusty sweaty!). The washing machine is my friend.
Actually I find that what really wears off my shorts is the rubbing from pedalling, not the washing. They sort of wear off around the crease of the thigh, inside the leg. I've changed my saddle position a little so it might help in reducing the lycra-chafing. That's where they break down first...

Well that's one way to create a gap in the paceline. :p
Hey, my shorts are NEVER dirty or stinky!
Seriously, unless i ride in 90 degrees or hotter weather, my shorts simply don't get sweaty or dirty. When I'm hot I mostly sweat on my head and neck. But I wash my shorts after several rides anyway even if they still seem quite clean. Because I wear panties, I don't need to wash them any more often than I wash my jeans.
I could ride in a paceline smelling like a daisy compared to most sweaty guys (if i "wanted" to ride in pacelines, which I don't!) ;)
I am not advocating that everyone wear panties under their shorts, though it seems that most here are stating that panties should never be worn under biking shorts.  I just am saying what works well for me and am relating a different side to it. :)

Hey Emily - It's nice to have a "sister in sweat". If someone isn't sweating after a 90 degree ride, then they can't be riding very hard. And Lisa if you truly as freshly scented as you claim, I am envious. When I get back from a ride the first place I want to be is in the shower. And the cycling clothes? Right into the washer......after every ride. Then at least I can start off "fresh as a daisy". :D
BleeckerSt_Girl

It's true....I rarely get sweaty or stinky, even on long hot rides. Only when it's over 90 degrees and very humid. Heat does not seem to bother me as much as it effects other people around me. I do get cold more easily than others in the winter however!
On my occasional really hot humid rides I "do" throw everything into the wash afterwards.

I wish I could call myself Fresh As A Daisy Sara! But nope, I'm a sweaty girl. On really hot rides, I sweat right through my chamois and end up with salt lines on the sides my saddle. It's actually kind of interesting because I can see exactly where my thighs touch the seat while I'm riding.
So Lisa, do you drink a lot while you're riding? I'm drinking so much water on my rides these days that I have to stop and refill my bottles if I go much over 25 miles. I must be sweating out a full water bottle every 15 miles!

Several weeks ago it was 96-98 here and humid. I rode in just bike shorts and a sports bra. i'm sure this is seriously breaking some cardinal cycling fashion rule, (and could result in some spectacular road rash if one were to crash) but it's what I do when i run in the heat (except with running shorts, which are so much cooler than bike shorts...), so why not? Your not the only one! I was the smart one in the fall who bought light blue PI shorts, not realizing that I really sweat down there. After the first ride, I realized I am a big sweater! I don't really drink that much , but I try to keep taking sips very frequently because I do know the dangers of dehydration. "Drink before you're thirsty...." I go through about a bottle to a bottle and a half (with electrolytes) on a 30 mile ride, unless it's extremely hot, when I might drink 2 bottles.
You probably drink way more than me because you sweat way more than me. Just makes sense! :)
As to bras...I am fairly small up top and don't really "need" a bra around the house. I've always really liked tank-tops with built-in bras, and I'm loving my Terry Eurohalter. (from right here on TE) I sweat HUGELY, but the Eurohalter wicks it away and keeps me quite comfy on rides. (I wear a shirt or sunscreen pullover over it on rides)
I've been told the Eurohalter is quite attractive on me....:D

You could put me in the jumbo margarita glass catagory  I am soooo jealous of all you shot glass size girls!
I think If I tried biking without a bra I would either cause an accident from people gawking or give myself black eyes when I go over bumps!

Good one LoriO!
I was thinking if I went braless, it would be two more things for my thighs to thwap when I'm attempting to go real fast! (no WONDER tummy is shrinking! it hates the beating!)
ETA: -- oh, meant to add: Hand washed, draped over the deck rail to dry unless I've got a full load of bike wear between the two of us! (DH does not wash his!)

OK, I'm not even going to start discussing my 34 DD's. Lawd, I wish I could share with some of you ladies. :p People actually PAY for these?
True story. I went out with a guy years ago who wanted me to do that. Purchase them, I mean. In that size. Of course he then went on to say that women tend to leave their SO after getting that done because they become "more attractive and are hit on all the time". I told him maybe it was because they finally realized that the SO was shallow and not thinking in the woman's best interest. That relationship did not last long.

Ok you gals are killin' me. I didn't get a chance to read posts yesterday and just got the chance today. This bra thing has gone out of control. LMAO. And regarding the pencils, magic markers, chalkboard erasers......cars..... The only way I could hold a pencil or any other thing on my chest is if I was lying on my back. I prefer to think of mine as "perky". Thats a nice way of saying, "damn it would be good to overload an "A" cup.
Well, in retrospect, I guess I will never have to worry about my cleavage overhanging my navel. Ewww...what a picture that is...sorry.

I've seen that. I go walkabout sometimes out on the concourse (airport) and have been witness to nipples bouncing around the beltline.
Anyway, I've never tried pencils or anything else. I don't like disappointment.
I'll see your pencils AND your magic marker set and raise you a couple of chalkboard erasers
How about a can of cat food?
That's definitely not my description, though. I might get one pencil.

Oh, don't bet on it. Gravity and age are plotting as we speak.
I'm way behind on this thread.

Silly, the pencil goes UNDER the boob, not on top! :D The test when I was young and a hippy was that if you could hold a pencil there, you needed to wear a bra for support. ;)

Oh, in that case I guess I lost the bet. I can't hold a pencil let alone a chalkboard eraser. I thought we were talking how much we could fit between our cleavage. Hmmmm.... and you all thought that I could hold up a chalkboard eraser - hehehe laugh for the night. The only thing these babies could hold up would be a piece of tape with the adhesive firmly pressed to the skin :p
I refuse to believe that nipples on ribcage can sag. Just plain old refuse to believe it. Sorry Zencentury. Denial is best.

I had to look this up to figure out where the pencil went too..... I guess us little folks are just assumed to not need the test, so we never hear about it. (I was thinking like Flybye - how many you could stick in your cleavage, but I still couldn't hold up any pencils there either....:p ) But even A cups prefer a little support, but stretchy without wires please :D .

I am glad Lisa clarified the pencil test, yeah I fail. My mom blessed me with large ones - blessing ha! What I find insane is how many of my friends will talk about my breasts with envy. Three different gals this week alone. My college roommate used to joke that me drying my bras gave her an inferiority complex. Trust me I didn't ask for these and I would gladly share!
No panties with bike shorts!
Sweaty and must wash every ride
Bra every day by necessity not choice!

Trust me, I am painfully aware that the pencil goes UNDER the boob. However.....I have very little...uh....how should I say this....overhang? And as far as support, well I think mine is to make them appear a little bigger than they are, and I don't like my nipples protruding through my t-shirt. :p
"Mine" meaning my bra.

The large boobs is one of the main reasons that I bike and don't run!! Big boobs and running just do not mix well together. I used to hate having to wear 2 bras when I ran. EVen with that they still would hurt. Give me my bicycle!!
Oh, I tried going Au Natural today for my ride. Wasn't that comfortable with it. I'll give it a few more tries but I am thinking of buying a couple of pairs of those moisture wicking underpants to wear. I found some neat ones that I liked at exofficio.com.

I've had very bad luck with Ex Officio. They didn't stay put on me. Tried 2 or 3 different styles. No go.

Guess I'll find out, I ordered a pair and will give them a try and see how it goes. If they don't work for bike riding, they may work well for horse back riding or just doing work around the house and barn when I sweat a lot!

They do wick VERY nicely! They just seem too stretchy or something to stay put on my generously proportioned hienie.
They also dry almost as fast as you hang them up.
I had 3 pair, and if they hadn't shifted around on me so much I'd've bought 3 more!
(your mileage may vary!)

This thread is hilarious!!!! I haven't been online much in the last few days...just read this and I'm cracking up. I needed a good laugh!!!
As for the pencil test, I'm not even trying it. I'd fail for sure.
