I just did my first triathlon. It was a short one- 1/3 swim, 14.8 bike and 4 mile run. It was fun, but now I want to get fast! Any tips would be appreciated.

Glad you ahd fun! I was at the Squamish Triathlon today -- just watching, but I will be actually in one on August 18th in Harrison Hot Springs in BC Canada. It's a really "easy" one. A 400m swim, 20k bike and 5 k run. I don't have a lot of time to train -- any tips would be great!

a good source of information for beginning triathletes is:
www.trinewbies.com
They also have a "for women who Tri" section:

Go for it ! It sounds like you have come along way with your running, Isn't that a great feeling?! For your first duathlon I would suggest finding one that is a "fun" one, with lots of newbies. You will be amazed at how nice people are at these events if you are new. One thing that I tried to practice was riding and running right after, even if only for 5 min, to get your legs used to the shock and to get an idea of the transition time and how I could go faster. Remember that you are there to see what you can do, have fun and next time you can worry about kicking butt. Good luck:)

Hi Gals,
I'm going to do my first Du on Saturday. It's a sprint - 2 K Run/10 K Bike/ 2 K Run. I've basically been training in 3 components: Strength 1 or 2 times per week, Running (actually, I'm still what I would call jogging) 2x4 K and 1 x 10 K per week, and biking anywhere from 24-40 K, 2 or 3 times per week. Once per week I do the combo thing - run 4 K, Bike 30 K and run 4 K. I'm practically dead when I get home, and can"t run the last leg non-stop, but I keep picking away at it!
This morning, I did a practise run for Saturday's Du, and came in at exactly 1 hour.
I'm getting ready for the Tim Horton's Duathlon in Windsor on Aug. 11. That one will be a biggie - 3K run/30K bike/6 K run.
I've just added some interval training to my routine this week. I'm not going to be breaking any speed records, but I am going to challenge myself, and I know it'll feel great to cross that Finish line!
I'm looking for information on the Niagra on the Lake Duathlon. I think itès held September 21st. If anyone has any info. on that I would appreciate hearing from you!
Regards,
Trixiee

I did my first tri at age 37, I was happy to finish. I am now hooked completely. I was at the end of my first race. It is a thrill. I encourage anyone to just go out and do it, ignore the tri-snobs.
Any one looking for a great entry tri, needs to save up an do the "Na Wahine" (Women Only") tri in September on Oahu, Hawaii. It is a great race - 650-700m swimm, 10-15 mile bike, and 5K run. Women only and the comradrie and encouragement is overwhelming.
One year the winner, a big time racer, won the drawing after the race for a new racing bike ($1,500), as she was being presented the bike, the announcer said "wait ladies, or final racer is about to cross the finish line" (she was well behind all others). We stopped and applauded her efforts, she was in tears...the overall winner then turned and took the microphone and said "I have a few racing bikes, you deserve this far more than I do", and gave the final racer the bike she had just won in the drawing. - that is what it is all about - I'm married to a world class "Tri - athlete" I am still an aspiring "TRY - athlete", and very contect with that -

Mits,
You are right on with your comments! I'm still digging the whole thing! I thought about doing a Marathon this year, but then thought again - I still am motivated to do my Du's!
I would absolutely love to do a Triathlon, but I'm not a strong swimmer at all.
Peace!:)
