We're back from Maine and have some pics to share.

We rented brand new (but clunky) Mountain Bikes. We've decided that Road Bikes will remain our focus for now:o Weather was volatile, but we still got in about 90+ miles of riding in five days.

Mr. Silver expressing concern over the weight he's gained (at the Androscoggin River); I gained 8 pounds in 7 undisciplined days!:

Silver cresting the pinnacle of Evans Notch in the White Mountain National Forest. Eight miles of straight climbing with no rest - a first for us, the last two at 10%+ grade. This same night, this road washed out in a deluge!

See, we really were there!

Beautiful scenery! Was it as cool as it looks, temperature-wise? Must have been a great vacation. I'll have to put Maine on that "must see" list.

Mr. S...what part of Maine was this? It's gorgeous! I have family in Scarborough/Old Town near Old Orchard Beach, and my dad stays in a veterans' hospital just outside Portland.

Looks like you guys had fun. :)

Yes, it was chilly. 50's in the evening, generally low 70's in the day. A couple days it never got above mid-60's! The lack of humidity was unusual for this southern boy.

The Garmon 305 got good use. I wouldn't have believed the grade without it! I'm absolutely hooked on that little toy.

Bethel is at the foot of the White Mountains, about 1.5 hours Northwest of Portland, 3 hours from Boston. Lots of cycling, canoeing/kayaking, running, hiking, skiing, etc. A REMARKABLE little town and totally uncommercialized by it's proximity to the ski slopes. I was VERY impressed!

;) After a ride I have to rush to my puter to see what I've done. Are you using MB?

Great pictures- how very pretty!!!
Sounds like you had a great vacation. Crazy that you gained weight even tho you were cycling so much (ah.... such is vacation, tho!).
Thanks for sharing your pics!

Nice Legs Silver!

And nice trip overall.

I think the time DBF and I got the first fix of biking "for real" was a 22-miler in Maine, in Arcadia N.P.

A couple years later the bug really bit.

What is MB?

Incidentally, in unpacking, I've not found my cable or HR monitor:eek:

What is MB?

I believe MB is referring to Motion Based, a web application for translating and analyzing GPS data as well as providing online mapping. We use it and love it! (Although it is pretty interesting to see the difference in some of the stats when comparing Motion Based to Garmin's Training Center.) Technology -- you gotta love it!!

HG is correct. If you think the info in Training center is cool, register and upload to Motion Based.

As to the diff in the #s, MB uses some kind of corrective algorithms to make the #s jive between satellite and mapping. I think it accounts for some the up and down that the satellite doesn't get. Usually your mileage will be a tad higher on MB.

I tried MB and was unimpressed...what did I miss?

It just gives lots more information. Cadence, breaks down heart rate better and in an easier to understand format, grades on elevation, and I like the nifty graphs. Also calories used (so I can have a milkshake), and weather for the ride.

Maybe I should just subscribe and give it a try.

Where is the best place to purchase better maps?

You can do the free membership. I'm not planning on doing the pay til next year, if then.

Never bought a map, I just use routeslip or bikely.
