best cycling shorts

Can someone suggest their favorite cycling shorts? I want to purchase a good pair that will help my comfort issue.

Pearl Izumi's seem to be really popular around here (So Cal). I have some. I also have some Specialized and haven't determined if I like one better than the other yet. The PI's were a lot more expensive, so you'd think they'd be better, but I'm still in testing mode. :)

I have PI Sugar Knickers and Sugar Shorts; they're good value for money, I think. They're short for me (I guess I have freakishly long femurs or PI runs short). The PI Ultrasensor shorts are amazing, I just got some and the fit is superior to the Sugars, more flattering, more muscle-hugging, better wicking. They're about 2X a much, too. (I went a little goofy in the heat, I guess:) )

I also have Cannondales but they're only 4 panel so the fit isn't as nice, the fabric is thinner and the chamois is...curious. They are good for riding the trainer in winter.

The PI shorts I bought in 1996 lasted 10 years. The chamois has finally reached "thin," but the fabric is good and there's only some minor hem unravelling at the left knee. They've not torn even when I hit the road--hard--earlier this month.

Good shorts are an investment, but I do recommend that you try them on if you can. Sizes are vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

As a new rider, I have to say that I'm a big fan of the Pearl Izumi Sugar Shorts. My first pair of shorts were the PI Microsensor shorts, and while I liked the feel of those better than other brands I tried on, I needed something with a little more padding.

I know that several women have said that too much padding actually increases discomfort, but I find that the extra padding helps while you're getting used to sitting on a saddle. Who knew that 2mm would make such a difference? (and why is it that it's cheaper? less wicking?)

Plus, I have short and chubby legs so having something with a shorter inseam helped reduce the "sausage" look (as well as made the tan line a little higher up so it doesn't look as weird when I wear regular shorts/skirts). :)

Well, I think it is pretty personal and you have to try them on, and just ride them to find out if you really like them.

That said, the PI's I have (don't even remember the model name) have lasted and lasted and lasted, so at least I can recommend them for quality. They were pricey, but they last.

I like Terry and Voler shorts.

If you have a bike shop you respect, go in and ask them to show you some shorts in your price range. It is amazing how different the different brands will feel!

If you find one you love, buy two pair. (just in case, and for back-up while you're washing one pair)

Thanks for all the info it was very helpful I just bought a pair of PI ultrasensors on the net for 65.00. Performand bike site had free shipping and 10% off yesterday.
