and no one is looking, do you pick it up and eat it?
I was 35 miles into my ride and was about to consume my last Pina Colada shot blok when I started watching the hawks above me. I opened my bento box to retrieve said shot blok and the bag caught on my velcro and launched the blok out and unto the pavement. I let out a squeal and did the tightest turn on my bike to retrieve my expensive energy cube (don't worry, I checked my mirror for cars first). I scooped it up and pulled over, rinsed with water, and devoured:p No body saw me, 5 second rule only slightly violated, and no crunchies. Life is good......:D
What would you have done?

You rinsed it with water, no harm done. ;) If it was my last one or was carefully rationing (and it wasn't raining or heavy traffic), I definitely would have stopped. If I had more than enough or was afraid for my safety... maybe not. No harm in a little extra protein, right? :)

Pavement probably gets enough heat from the sun to kill most e. coli. Rinsing is definitely a good idea at least. I probably wouldn't have stopped over one block though.

Road is more dirt dirty than bacterially dirty, imo
I prob'ly would've sucked it without even washing and spit out the tiny stones.

If a ShotBlok falls and no one is there to see (except you) did it really fall? ;)

If a SnotBlock falls - you post about it on the web and let the world know!! :D
Well, gosh...you just busted the cardinal rule....now we all know and will go "Ewwww...."
Probably best to suck it down like a raw oyster and not think about it!

Me? I'd let it go and pretend that I had eaten it anyway. I really don't like the things (they slither down my throat only slightly less worse than GU). I'd probably just, uh, lie to my riding partners and say I was still needing fuel, and stop at the next gas station for some fig newtons. But that's just me. :D

Umm if it were me i'd pick it up..
Reason? I don't have a never ending supply of shot bloks but i do have a couple of very nice dealers..:) Still, i'm sure it won't kill me to pick up! We're going to go sometime right?
Can you see the headline "panic in bike community, biker killed by a blob of blok.." Cycle for your lives
*ahem*
No brain cells were harmed during this post.

What doesn't kill me only postpones the inevitable.

Hmmm, new and interesting insights into your psyche there Dar... :p
Naw, you know I'm just yanking your chain. Funny that, if I dropped it out on the road, I'd wash it off. Especially if I was down to my last one and needed it. When working at the hospital, no matter what I drop (clean glove, whatever) I never pick it up and use it. (well, of course I pick it up, I just throw it away) We have a sparkling clean facility but there is NO 5 sec rule in the hospital.
So what flavor was it anyway? :D

I actually had this question go through my mind today on a trail in VA. I dropped half of a snack bar right after taking a bite. I quickly picked it up, washed it off, inspected it and plopped it in my mouth. I think it tasted better.:p

I will eat anything dropped on the ground while hiking, or backpacking on a wilderness trail. If it is a rural road, yes.
I city street or sidewalk, most likely not.
Anywhere inside, forget it!! And I keep an immaculate house.
For some reason things like dirt and bugs only really bother me indoors.

There is actual scientific validity to the 5 second rule you know. Bacteria don't move as fast as we might think and it takes 'em a while to latch on to something. Now, the dirt onthe other hand... well it's dirt and I used to eat it when I was a kid so why not now?

A friend frequently told me "Ya gotta eat a peck o' dirt before you die......"

You know I have to pace what strange things I share with you:p It was pina colada. Not as good as the cran-fizz IMHO. Now if it was a gel I'd a left it!

With my terrible snot-rocket skills, the goofed snot block is about as likely for me as a dropped shot blok.
But, I would have done what you did...with the shot blok. :)
Shot blok, heck yes. Love those.
Gu? I probably would've squeezed it out on the ground on purpose. :p
I recently tossed a walnut to the dog. He caught it and politely dropped it on the floor, rejecting it. I looked at the walnut, looked at the dog, looked at my boyfriend, and asked, "Does the 5 second rule apply to the dog's mouth?" We're still cracking up over that one.
And NO, I did not eat the walnut!

Slight hijack...yesterday I tried a new gel for me: CarBoom brand, orange & vanilla flavor. OMGosh, it was GOOD. I am a convert.
