lubing Speedplay pedals

I've had Speedplay pedals on my bike and I love them. However, I tried to lube them a week or so ago and BOTH of the screws are apparently stripped - they won't back out at all - they just keep turning but I can't get them out. I know I was very very careful not to overtighten them the last time so I have no idea how they got stripped.

What can I do? Is there some trick I can use to get the screws out and then replace them? Or do I have to replace the pedals???

I had this problem. Took the pedal to the LBS. Turned out the screw wasn't stripped, but it sits in a small collar that can turn. The LBS guy took a pocketknife blade or some such sharp thin thing and used it to hold the collar while rotating the screw.

Thanks Deb! I'll try that - I hope that is all that's wrong with them. I really don't want to spring for new pedals if I can help it.

what happened that made you think they needed lube?
Mine are new, I'm just planning ahead;)

sorry Zen, I didn't mean to ignore you! I just checked this thread again....

When I bought my pedals (2 years ago I guess) the guy at my former LBS told me they should be lubed every 3 months or so during riding season. I realized a couple weeks ago that I haven't lubed them for AT LEAST a year. They seem to be performing fine but I figured I'd lube them - who knows, maybe I can't tell that they aren't performing fine! :cool:

I've always lubed the cleats. Usually before each (or at least every other) ride.
I can definately tell a difference if it's been awhile since I last lubed. Can unclip and clip in much easier if they've been recently lubed.
Now, tell me what part of the pedal should I be lubing (since I'm so lube happy and all :D )

You have to get a grease injector, remove the little allen screw opposite the axle, and squirt grease in there.

Deb's response is 100% correct, however, if you are still having trouble trying to hold the sleeve the screw sits in while you unscrew the end screw, you can take off the metal plates and pedal platform, exposing the internal axile and lube port -- now it is easy to use needlenose pliers to hold end and unscrew cap, grease, and replace.
