View Full Version : Water bottles
Now that the summer is starting, I notice again the plastic taste in my water whenever I go on a ride. It always makes me wonder whether I am drinking something in addition to the water I put it the bottles. Does anyone have any idea of how long plastic water bottles can be used without significant degrading?
Who is using Sigg bottles? I love the look of Sigg bottles (I have been lusting after the yellow sports bottles I see in the local Whole Foods Market). Anyone using Klean Kanteen bottles? Pros and cons?

I really like the Soma poly-whatever bottles. No icky leaching plastic taste, and cooties don't grow into the plastic like with regular bottles.

Most bike shops have them now.
Thank you KnottedYet!
I have not seen those at my local bike shop, but will keep an eye open for them and maybe order them online...

Part of my graduate work focused on bisphenol A, I never expected to hear those words anywhere else. :)
My husband is very picky about what he drinks out of and I've been wondering if there is any way to find him something non-plastic. I looked at some aluminum water bottles for hikers, but they have screw tops, possible but tricky on a bike. He needs a glass water bottle that has some kind of plastic lid with a straw, I guess!

Sigg makes ones with traditional bike bottle tops. I bought two from Steep and Cheap last week. I don't like them for biking however, because I like to squeeze the bottle and have that nice stream of water come out. That doesn't work with aluminum. You basically have to suck the water out of the bottle.

I wouldn't want to drink out of aluminum, either. If you don't mind other metal, the SOMA Commuter's Coffee Mug (http://www.somafab.com/morningrush.html) is stainless inside. The lid is plastic, unfortunately, but it is designed to be drinkable on-bike.
For glass, you could get a glass bottle like this Lipton Iced Tea (http://www.smartspot.com/1_smart_spot/1-2_prod_detail.php?grp=101&id=2140000028) with dimensions that would fit well into a bike bottle cage. Punch a hole in the lid and stick a long straw down to the base of the jar. It wouldn't be completely leakproof, but I think it would work.

One of the guys at my LBS told my husband that the plastic taste in water bottles can be reduced by running very hot water through the bottle for about two minutes. I haven't tried it, but my husband did and he says it works.

I love my Sigg bottles and never use the plastic anymore. They have a new sports top for the bike bottles that you can order from their site also. It has a flip up cover so it stays clean. You can twist and lock it or leave it open To drink you just push your mouth down on it and the flow is good unlike with the old tops you had to suck on. I put a neoprene cover on mine to mimimize scatching from the cages and it also keeps the water much colder for longer than plastic in my opinion.

Just add some Gatorade or Heed to cover up the plastic taste :D

How do these bottles do on the "full of liquid, bounce test?" I can be a klutz at times :D .

I use the standard wide-mouth bike bottles you can get at any shop. I switch to polar insulated bottles when it heats up.
I get the plastic taste out by rinsing a new bottle with mouthwash (listerine). Amazing how well that works.
