View Full Version : Race, my first ever!

I started running back in October for triathlon training. I've shown good, steady improvement with an occasional flash of (relative) greatness and wanted to see how I compared to others. So, I signed up, and today I ran my first race.
I've been consistently running in the low 9's per mile with one under 9 run so today I hoped to finish under 9 minutes per miles for this 5k. I actually ran at 8:33. I rocked! Unfortunately, I also rolled: on a loose gravely down hill I twisted my ankle and took a fall. I don't know how much time I lost to that but it had to be considerably because it took a while to get back some composure and I felt like I was hardly moving for a while. I've got scrapes starting on my left shoulder and down to my knee and on my right knee and palm (the worst bruising is on my right palm). My left ankle is tender and swollen.
It was a great run, but it may keep me off my feet recovering for several days :(

WOW!!!! :D  Congrats on your first ever (of many?) races!!!!! You had a great race, and a bad fall. I'm glad you're OK! What an excellent time!!! So very proud of you- you've got to be ecstatic with your time.
Now rest up, and tend to those scrapes and bruises! Heal well!!!

Woohoo!
A rock and roll slug! Most impressed, MD... however, next time please restrict yourself to just rocking everyone elses sox off!
Great pace - running is something I don't do... partly because I have been told I run like a bear :p
Well done... so I am guessing 8:33 is a PB as it was under your goal. Half a minute is an awesome effort!
Congrats, well done and now... arinca oil or cream on that ankle, and maybe some oral arinca (in pillules or drops) to help you heal from the inside... and remember - keep it elevated!

Wow!!! How do you feel? I mean beyond the falling part...and I hope you don't have long-lasting effects from that.
That is a fantastic time though, you rock! Do you have pictures?

My previous best was 8:58 over 3.4 miles, so today's run shattered that (thankfully it didn't shatter my ankle or knee).
Here's my favorite picture from the run:

and 2 that show some of my scrapes and bruises (it actually looks quite a bit worse than in these pictures)

Other than the falling down stuff I feel great! However, I've pretty much resigned myself to at least three rest days without any training :(

I LOVE the pic of you running- you look so strong and fast!!!
Bummer about the scrapes- I'm sure they hurt way worse than they look too (kinda like a paper cut- doesn't look bad but hurts like heck!). OUCH!

These pics show the scrapes better (the ankle swelling doesn't show well at all in photo)

As far as the scrapes go, the left elbow is the most bothersome, but overall, the ankle is the worst injury. I'm doing the R.I.C.E therapy and hoping to get back to training on Wednesday.

Well done MD although I'm sorry you took a spill - looks sore! Great pace too!! You and I had about the same speed for our first 5k race - you were actually faster because I didn't stop to fall.... :p !

That was a fast run! Even with FALLING in the middle of it!
Great job! Congratulations.

Swollen and bruised, the picture doesn't do it justice ;)
It doesn't feel too bad to walk on but I think a check by my ankle & foot doc is in order. I want to get back to training ASAP but I don't want to jeopardize my season.

Congrats on your first race! :D :D :D Wow, I'm so impressed with your time. I can't believe you ran that pace and you just started running in October. I can only dream of a sub 9 (or sub 10 for that matter!).
I hope the scrapes and swelling heal up quickly.

Congrats on your race, that's awesome.
Sorry about your wounds. I hope your ankle heals well. Looks like a significant sprain.
