anyone else have itchiness right along the forehead where the helmet sits? I swear, my head itches ALL the time. Drives me nuts.

I need ideas how to help it if anyone else has experienced this... :o

Nope, you're nuts. :p Sorry, couldn't resist.

How old is your helmet? Could you be allergic to something in the pads?

LOL.. well yeah, the nuts part is a given...:D

helmet is less than a year old. Bell, which I have worn before... it fits better than any I've had and was the cheapest I've bought. Go Figure  :p

I bought it one day when I caught the train with some friends to San Juan Capistrano and we rode back to San Diego... 1/2 way there I realized I'd left my helmet in the back seat! (Now I have the Bike Cube!) DOH! Stopped at the 1st bike shop and bought one.

My forehead has been itching for a while and it finally dawned on me WHY... now I gotta figure out what to do about it...

I've never looked... are the pads replaceable?

Most pads are just velcroed in. You can probably replace them, or maybe just a good washing and thorough drying will do the trick.

Or could it be your sunscreen or lotion? Lots of things make me itchy, especially if I sweat...meaning if it's hot and my waistband is tight, I go all red and itchy there. Yeah, lovely visual I know.

So maybe it could be a combination of the pads in your helmet, sweat, and sunscreen/hairstuff/lotion?

Just be sure to only change one thing at a time -- helmet pads, sunscreen, hair gel... that way you can figure out the culprit and not give up your favorite SPF or Dippity-Doo...

I used to get a sort of hive reaction from hair spray. Are you using something on your hair? Teigyr's suggestion is probably good?

My skin reaction only happened when I had to hair spray paste my hair into place for band stuff in high school. Hot shako, long day, sweaty, and TONS of hair spray, and voila. I had to make sure to wash it off asap, and then I didn't tend to have problems.

Or
you could try covering that part of the strap with moleskin.

Maybe wear a head scarf, buff or one of those coolmax headsweats under the helmet. I wash my pads often and put my helmet in the dishwasher for a good cleaning every now and then!

Cheers.

Dishwasher? I can't imagine the high heat would be good for the foam in the helmet. Definitely not the dry cycle. My dishwasher heats the water beyond what the water tank does. There's no "cool" setting.

Is there any rash occuring? You can have something that has never irrated you start to really bug you (guess that's why the divorce rate is high). Seriously though, maybe you just need a new helmet.

I know what you mean. I have VERY sensitive skin (rosacea) to the point where sometimes even my sunglasses will cause a rash. To keep my forehead happy I wear a flat sweatband under my helmet - it is made by HeadSweats - I have bought them at REI and LLBean for $12. Since they are flat, I don't even feel them.
Hope this helps,
Trish

With me every time I put my helmet on my head itches. It's the same with any hat I wear. In my case it's psychological:rolleyes:

Actually it may not be a psychological thing. I get hives from pressure on my skin. Putting a hat or helmet on definitely puts some pressure on your hair and where it contacts your skin. Just a thought! :)

1+ on the headband or do rag suggestion. I get itchy from the combo of sunscreen, sweat and pads on the helmet. I always wear a do rag under the helmet. It doesn't completely eliminate the problem, but it helps a lot.

It is psychological with me because it's as soon as I put on any kind of headwear. At least with cycle helmets you can scratch through the vents:cool: Honest. There's nothing running around in my hair...really:p

The first thing I'd check is whether the padding is dirty. It's pretty easy to soak it with sweat, and it's pretty common to get irritated skin from that. And it's a quick easy fix :)

If clean padding doesn't solve the problem, then look at things like lotion and hair stuff.

It's not sweat (I don't sweat much and my helmet is fairly new) and it is the second I put anything on my head. I've always been like that. I do have to watch what hair products I use in my hair as some cause me extreme irritation, even making my scalp break out. Just one of those things I have to grin and bear.

Try wearing a scraf flat over your forehead if nothing else works. I get the exact same dry patches on either side of my forehead when I wear a hat. I hate it, it is like bad dandruff in just two small spots. I think maybe my head doesn't breath well in these two spots or something? good luck!

I've got a Buff which I think is great. I do suffer from patches of dry skin - my right arm being the worst affected. Tried everything to get rid of it. Sometimes the itch drives me up the wall:( Any suggestions to get rid of it???

Aloe Vera gel, specifically the Trader Joe's version. It doesn't feel like lotion going on, but the next day your skin will feel better for it.
My second suggestion (that works for me) is kinda icky - mineral oil bath. Pour about 1/2 bottle of mineral oil into a nice bath. Careful, you, your tub, and everything you touch will be icky and slick for hours. Also, you will have trouble keeping it out of your hair. But, your skill will feel better for weeks.
You can get the mineral oil in the intestinal ailments section of your grocery store. Don't use baby oil, which is mineral oil but with scent in it, the mineral oil is better because it lacks the scents and other things.
I have also applied mineral oil directly to an affected area, like your arm.
The Aloe gel might work for people with helmet issues.
